September 01, 1923 - August 31, 1964
Born Rocco Marchegiano Sept. 1, 1923 to Mr. and Mrs. Pierino Marchegiano, in Brockton, MA. Marciano emerged from boxing obscurity in the early 1950s to win the heavyweight crown in 1952. The Brockton Blockbuster, a former local shoe worker, became the heavyweight champion of the world when he defeated Jersey Joe Walcott on September 23, 1952. In the final fight of his career, Marciano recovered from an early knockdown and dropped light heavyweight champion Archie Moore three times en route to a ninth-round knockout. Back pain forced Marciano to retire in 1956. One day before his 46th birthday, on August 31, 1969, Marciano died tragically in a plane crash near Newton, Iowa. He was en route to a birthday party. Marciano is the only world champion to complete his career undefeated. His record of 49 consecutive professional wins still stands.
