June Carter Cash, wife of country music's living legend Johnny Cash died Thursday May 15, 2003 of complications from heart surgery she had on May 7th at the age of 73 years. At the age of ten, June Carter-Cash began her professional career as a musician, playing guitar, banjo, and autoharp, while performing at the Grand Ole Opry. Not satisfied with musical pursuits alone, she also studied acting under Elia Kazan at the Actor's Studio in New York City. This training led her to a wide variety of television roles, ranging from The Jackie Gleason Show to, of course, The Johnny Cash Show. In 1956, while backstage at the Grand Ole Opry, she met another performer by the name of Johnny Cash. They became singing partners and married in 1968. In 1979, she wrote an autobiography, "Among My Klediments," and in 1987, she released a memoir, "From the Heart." Johnny her husband of 35 years and had a son, John Carter Cash, in 1970. She was also the mother of country singer Carlene Carter, whose father was Carl Smith, and singer Rosanne Cash is her stepdaughter. Funeral services will be private and details will not be released at the request of the Cash family.
