Emmy award-winning actor Philip Edward Hartman was born on September 24, 1948, to a German-Catholic family, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada.
He joined the famed Los Angeles based comedy troupe, "The Groundlings" in 1975. He became a member of the Saturday Night Live cast on October 11, 1986, but gained his US citizenship in 1990. He stayed on Saturday Night Live for 8 seasons; leaving at the end of the 93/94 season, and holds the record as the castmember who have stayed on the show the longest. He has been noted for his SNL roles as Jesus, Frankenstein, Anal Retentive (fill in the blank) Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and the announcer for many sketches, just to name a few.
Hartman made a pilot of a variety show simply known as "The Phil Hartman Show" in which he co-hosted with his wife. When it was never picked up, he was cast on the NBC sitcom "Newsradio" as radio voice talent Bill McNeal, to add to his extensive TV career on the animated prime-time cartoon "The Simpsons" as both Troy McLure and Lionel Hutz, and on 1-800-COLLECT commercials as "Max Jerome Private Eye". On the Simpsons he has worked with former SNL alumnist Harry Shearer, and former SNL writer Conan O' Brien. His films include Sgt. Bilko and Jingle All the Way.
On May 28, 1998, Hartman was shot to death in his bed by his wife his wife who then turned the gun on herself. He was 49.
He has been divorced twice, and was currently married to Brynn (Vicki) Omdahl, they had had 2 children, Sean (Born 1989) and Birgen (Born 1992).
