Douglas A. Drew, 62, of Barton died peacefully January 23, 2002, after a short illness at his home, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Drew was born September 12, 1939, in West Burke, a son of Gordon and Esther (Comett) Drew. On February 20, 1965, he married Marilyn Duckless, who survives him.
He was a service technician for Converse Company in Orleans from where he retired on September 20 after 20 dedicated years.
He was a bee keeper and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and working out of doors.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Drew, of Barton; and by the following brothers and sisters: Reynolds LaBay of Westfield, Massachusetts, Curtis LaBay of Lyndon, Elaine Willey and her husband, Floyd, of West Burke, and Loraine Newland and her husband, Winston, of West Burke; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Ralph LaBay.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 26, with the Reverend Michael Caldwell officiating. Spring interment will be in Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton.

Arden C. Duckless
Arden C. Duckless, 88, of Orleans died at his home on Monday, January 21, 2002.
Mr. Duckless was born in Newport Center on September 23, 1913, the son of Clarence and Lona (Connal) Duckless. He owned and operated Duckless Plumbing and Heating for over 40 years.
He truly was an outdoorsman. He owned a hunting camp in Newport Town as well as a summer camp on Daniels Pond in Glover. He spent many hours with family and friends at both places. He enjoyed gardening and snowmachining with his wife, Doris. In later years he liked to go out on his four-wheeler. He also enjoyed woodworking and giving some of these items to family members. He especially enjoyed family cookouts and gatherings.
On January 24, 1936, he married Doris M. Labounty, who predeceased him on December 29, 1990. He is survived by his children: Melvidene Fortin of Derby, Marilyn "Skip" Drew and her husband, Douglas, of Barton, Arden F. Duckless of Underhill Center, and Linda Verge and her husband, Raymond, of Newport Center; by his grandchildren: Brian Cote and his wife, Lisa, of East Burke, Scott Cote and his wife, Pam, of Utah, Alan Fortin and his wife, Rhonda, of East Charleston, and Emily Verge of Newport Center; by his great-grandchildren: Joshua, Beau, and Molly Kate Cote of East Burke, Eric and Ashleigh Cote of Utah, and Olivia Grace Cote of East Charleston; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Arland and by his sisters Bessie Lloyd and Mildred Moyer.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 25, at Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Spring interment will take place at Newport Center Cemetery.

Carmell (Broome) Haney
Carmell (Broome) Haney, 43, died January 24, 2002, at her home in Holland.
Mrs. Haney was born August 13, 1958, in Newport, a daughter of Noreen (Broome) Brooks and the late Freeman Brooks.
She was the kind of person who always did things her way. She bowled and loved her bingo. She loved to celebrate the holidays, especially Christmas and Halloween. She also enjoyed doing arts and crafts with her mother. She liked going to the beach and enjoyed other outdoor activities.
Before she was sick herself she could never do enough for others who were having a hard time. She devoted many hours of love and affection to her children and grandchildren. For many years she worked along with her mother at Glover Community School as a janitor.
She was very proud of the fact that she received licensed practical nurse training that enabled her to pursue a short career at Union House Nursing Home. She will be sadly missed by her friends at Union House as well as by her family.
She leaves behind her mother, Noreen (Broome) Brooks, of Newport; her son Jeremy Haney and his companion, Kelly Mayhew, of Newport; her daughter Valerie Faust and her husband, Clayton; her grandchildren Sam and Emily Faust of Brownington; her fiancé, Rick Horner; and her special caregiver, Sylvia Horner.
She is also survived by her uncle Pete (David) Broome of Brownington; by her uncle Ken Broome and his wife, Cookie, of Barton; by her aunt Madeline Stout and her husband, Art, of Hightstown, New Jersey; and by her aunt Linda Pepin and her husband, Ed, of Hampton, Long Island, New York. She also leaves many cousins: William "Billy" Broome of New Jersey, Rick, Kathleen, and Jake Pepin of Florida, Ginny, Rudy, Samantha, and Danielle Dombi of New York, Sandy, Ralph, and Audrey Owen of New York, Marylou West of Morgan and Florida, Patty Stout of New Jersey, Wayne, Eva, and Chance Broome of Brownington, and Tony, Will, Melissa, and Warren Smith of Barton.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 28, with the Reverend Donald Vincent officiating. Spring interment will be in Brownington Center Cemetery.
