Gladys Wylie Spaulding, 95, a longtime resident of Craftsbury, died at Greensboro Nursing Home on Friday, August 10, 2007.
Mrs. Spaulding was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on April 28, 1912, the daughter of David and Cora (Allen) Wylie.
She was a graduate of Craftsbury Academy and attended a business college in Northhampton, Massachusetts.
On April 16, 1932, she married Gerald K. Spaulding at a family home in Craftsbury. Mr. Spaulding died April 16, 1995.
For many years the Spauldings made their home in both St. Johnsbury and Craftsbury Common. In the late 1950s they built a camp where they enjoyed their summers.
She had been employed as a telephone operator in the Craftsbury telephone office and at St. Johnsbury Trucking.
After the death of her husband, she moved to Lauredon Apartments in Greensboro and later was a resident of Craftsbury Community Care Center until a few days prior to her death.
She was a very active person throughout her life. In 1941 she got her pilot's license. She loved horse back riding, and she enjoyed family fishing trips and grilling the catch of the day beside the brook.
As a youngster she spent many happy hours at her uncle's camp on Little Hosmer where Professor Coburn taught her and others how to swim.
Later in life, the coast of Maine and the Gaspe Peninsula were favorite vacation destinations.
She was a talented and creative seamstress and made a lot of her own clothes; she also sewed for her family. She loved entertaining and family gatherings at camp.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up with current events and world issues.
She was a member of the United Church of Craftsbury and the Search Light Club, and she was a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter, Roberta Alexander, and her husband, Robert, of Craftsbury Common; a son, Gerald “Gerry” Spaulding Jr. of Hardwick; four grandchildren: Peter Alexander, John Alexander, Jessica Spaulding, and Travis Spaulding; and her beloved cat Sir. She was expecting a great-grandchild in late January 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald "Jerry" Spaulding.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Craftsbury in Craftsbury Common with Pastor Alan Parker officiating.

Bernard Roland Robtoy
Bernard Roland Robtoy, 77, a longtime Swanton resident and more recently of Island Pond, died peacefully Sunday morning, August 5, 2007, in Evansville on the grounds of the Clan of the Hawk, where he had spent many hours in a place that he loved so much.
Born in St. George on September 30, 1929, Mr. Robtoy was a son of the late Fred and Alice (Robtoy) Robtoy. He was employed for 23 years with the former Swanton Packing Company. Frank Reed was his employer and good friend, and continued, along with his wife, Sandy, to visit him even after his retirement.
He enjoyed the friendship of his many friends at Sunrise Manor in Island Pond and his extended family from the Clan of the Hawk, especially Chief Lone Cloud (Ralph Swett) with whom he spent many hours.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda, of 56 years; by two daughters, Bernadette Paola of West Virginia and Eunice Ann Konon of Long Island, New York; by two sons, Bernard E. Robtoy of Swanton and Adrian Robtoy of St. Albans; by nine grandchildren: Sean “Buddy” Robtoy and his girlfriend, Amber, of St. Albans, Adrian II “Pete” of St. Albans, Jordan of Highgate, Sonya of Swanton, Shana of Williston, Tiffany Cratty and her husband, Justin, of New York, Michael Gagne of Long Island, Heather Robtoy of Burlington, and Felecia Burleson of California; by four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Janet and Harold Osmer of Windsor, Donna Buchanon of Laconia, New Hampshire, Norma and Forbes Louverin of Torrington, Connecticut, and Alberta Sweet of East Topsham; by many nieces, nephews, and cousins; by one very faithful friend, Carol Irons; and by his many friends from the Clan of the Hawk.
He was predeceased by three children: his infant daughter Bernetta Ann, Sergeant Penelope Robtoy Pelletier, and Christopher Sweet Robtoy; by six sisters and brothers-in-law: Laura and Leo Kenyon, Agnes and Herbert Button, Yvonne and Arthur Laplante, Bernice and William Braley, Barbara and William Root, Evelyn Robtoy, and Walter Sweet.
A celebration of Mr. Robtoy’s life was held August 9 at the Memorial United Methodist Church at Swanton Village. The Reverend Marcheta Townsend officiated. Interment followed in the Robtoy family lot in Riverside Cemetery.

Janice Iline “Tink” (Eastman) Rash
Janice Iline “Tink” (Eastman) Rash, 74, of Westmore died surrounded by her family at Fletcher Allen Heath Care in Burlington on Friday, August 10, 2007.
Mrs. Rash was born November 13, 1932, (on a Friday, as she liked to say) in Springfield to Chester A. Eastman and Ruth (Hoisington) Eastman.
Her husband of 55 years, Morris Rash, predeceased her in April 2005.
Known primarily as Tink, Mom, or Nana, she spent her life devoted to her family.
She loved reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching movies, playing cribbage, listening to music, and spending time with her parakeet Shelby. She treasured her quiet moments in her home that she made.
She is survived by her sisters: Joyce Beebe of Springfield, Evelyn Benware of Chester, and Dolly Chandler of California; by her children: Kathy Dyke of Freeport, Maine, Valerie Perkins of Westmore, Deborah March of Orleans, Terry Goss of Binghamton, New York, Larry Rash of Westmore, and Andrew Rash of Colchester; by her grandchildren: Kerry Hammond, Kimberly Wood, Kristy Stoddard, Michael “Dyke” Phair, Erin Perkins, Lori Perkins, Chad Perkins, Nathan Goss, Timothy Goss, Adam March, Meghann March, Jennifer Rash, Crystal Crown, and Joey Rene; by 16 great-grandchildren; and by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; by her brother Raymond Eastman; and by her sister Gloria Foster.
A gathering for friends and family will be held at the community hall in Westmore on August 19 from 2 to 4 p.m.
