Dorothy Maw Wells died peacefully Saturday, February 3, 2001, after a long struggle with cancer at Willow Knoll Retirement Community in Middletown, Ohio.
She was born in Richmond, Quebec, to Charles and Ada Taylor Maw. She graduated from Brighton High School in Island Pond, then went on to become a registered nurse in Maine. She came back to Island Pond to work for Doctor William McBride prior to going to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a registered nurse in Walter Reed Hospital. Following this she worked as a secretary for the government. After her marriage to William H. Wells she moved to Ohio and became a homemaker. She took great pride in her flower gardens. She loved her dogs as well as feeding birds year-round. She was generous to her neighbors in times of need.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William H. Wells, of Middletown, Ohio; by her sister Muriel Maw O'Gorman of Island Pond; by her husband’s stepmother, Mrs. Thelma Wells, of Nashville, Tennessee; by three sisters-in-law: Gerp Taylor of Daytona Beach, Florida, Yvonne Eltzroth of Corpus Christie, Texas, and Mary Wells of Palmdale, California; and by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Special thanks go to the excellent care and support provided by the hospice workers, doctors, and nurses.

Betty C. Hartman
Betty C. Hartman, 75, of Barton, died in Barton on Monday, March 26, 2001.
Mrs. Hartman was born in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, on November 13, 1925, the daughter of Lester and Francis (Kennedy) Voss. She was a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall in New York City in the mid-1940s. During her lifetime she enjoyed antiquing and owned and operated Second Time Around, a retail store in Pennsylvania that sold antiques. She moved to Barton three years ago to be near her son and was well-loved by everyone at Maple Lane Nursing Home.
On January 13, 1956, she married Robert Hartman, who predeceased her. She is survived by her sons, Brent Shafer and his wife, Barbara, of Orleans and Neil Hartman and his wife, Jacqueline, of Stroudsburg; her grandchildren, Juanita Shafer and Matthew Hartman; by her stepgrandchildren: Aaron Smith, Christopher Smith, and Cory Smith; by her great-granddaughters: Ashley Conley, Kristen Smith, and Erin Michele Smith; by her brother Joseph Voss and his wife, June, of Stroudsburg; by her former daughter-in-law, Carol Davis, of Barton; by her sisters-in-law, Jean Voss of Lufkin, Texas, and Nancy Hartman-Kent of Stroudsburg; and by nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother John.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28, at Cherry Valley United Methodist Church in Stroudsburg.

Arlene Ruth Page
Arlene Ruth Page, 84, of Newport, died in Newport on Tuesday, March 20, 2001.
Mrs. Page was born in Stanhope, Quebec, on November 23, 1916, the daughter of Alexander and Catherine (Charland) Lyons. She lived in Derby for over 40 years. She was a 30-year member and past district deputy of Eastern Star Newport Lakeside Chapter No. 27. She was also a member of United Church of Derby and the Women's Social Union of United Church.
On March 12, 1950, she married Ira Page, who predeceased her on November 6, 1990. She is survived by her daughters, Sheila Stevens and her husband, Ronald, of Morgan and Judy Page of Derby; by her stepchildren: Leslie Page-Dowhan and her husband, Richard, of Rye, New Hampshire, Reginald Page and his wife, Nancy, of San Francisco, California, and Barbara Page-Edison and her husband, Raymond, of Applegate, California; by her brother Kenneth Lyon of Barre; by seven grandchildren; by seven stepgrandchildren; by several great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sons, Michael in 1995 and Doug in 1982; and by her brothers: Andrew, Hector, and Cashie.
A funeral service was held on Friday, March 23, at United Church of Derby with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating. Spring interment will take place at Derby Center Cemetery.
