Douglas R. James, 63, of Jay, VT, died suddenly at his home on March 5, 2012. He was born on November 8, 1947 in Vernon, Vermont a son of Winthrop and Madeline (Smead) James. Doug graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1965 and soon joined the Army and served until 1969. He later joined the Vermont State Police from which he retired as a sergeant after almost 30 years of service. During that time he was a member of the VSP Bomb Squad. Doug was also actively involved in the area and was a retired Jay Peak Ski Patrol Volunteer, he was a founding member and current chief of the Jay Volunteer Fire Department and a mentor to all his firefighters. He also enjoyed working on firework displays. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed his hunting trips and going to deer camp with Kurtis and Bruce and 4 wheeling with RJ and Lee. Doug and Peggy liked to go on their annual trips to Las Vegas and to Florida to see his Dad at Christmas time. They also enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner with camp members and their families. Doug is survived by his life partner, Peggy Loux of Jay, VT, his father Winthrop James of Fort Myers, Fla, his brother Dennis and his partner Michael Pereira of Los Angeles, California and by his sister Sandra of Seattle, Washington. Shawn Francis Chaput, 32, of North Troy, VT, passed away suddenly at his home on March 2, 2012 . He was born September 21, 1979 in Newport, VT a son of Francis and Debbie (Keement) Chaput. Shawn was a great child who grew up into a great man and a very loving and caring person. He had a love for sports and a great love for his dogs Lincoln and Max. Shawn graduated from North Country Union High School in 1998 where he played football the year they won the State Championship. He was also chosen for the Shriner Bowl. While in High School he worked at Grand Union with Dave Bouffard. When Dave purchased Derby Village Store, Shawn went to work for him there and worked many years for him. Shawn leaves behind his parents: Francis and Debbie Chaput, his brother Matthew of Derby, Vt and his niece Aleah, his sister Amanda of North Troy, VT, his nephews: Dylan, Cody, Jordyn, and niece Larkyn, his brother Thomas of Fla, his sister Christina and her partner Alan Coburn of Newport, VT, his nephews: Jayden, Tanner, and his niece Amaya. He also leaves behind his grandmothers Sadie Watters and Ivah Chaput, many Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his grandfathers Felix Chaput, Sr, and John Keement, Sr. Shawn was truly one of a kind and will be dearly missed. Bonnie Kay Ladd
(January 23, 1945 - March 4, 2012)
Bonnie Kay Ladd, 67, of Glover, VT, passed away suddenly on March 4, 2012 in Newport, VT. She was born January 23, 1945 in Sunbury, PA beloved daughter of Kathryn Baker. On December 26, 1962 she married Michael Ladd who survives her. Mrs. Ladd was a stay at home Mom until her children were all in school and then she became secretary for the Glover School for 25 years. She was the Glover Church trustee for many years and a member of the Glover Church Women’s Union. She was a current member of the American Legion Post 76 Auxiliary. She loved her antiques, decorating her home and she enjoyed her collection of Elvis’ CD’s and tapes. She also enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s sports events, dance recitals, and all school activities. She also loved family gatherings at the Ladd camp on Lake Salem and motorcycle riding with Mike. Bonnie is survived by her husband Michael Ladd of Glover, VT, by her children: Michael Ladd, Jr and his wife Beth of St. Albans, VT, Pamela Raymond and her husband Wayne of Stowe, VT, and Matthew Ladd and his wife Sheilah of Glover, VT, by her grandchildren: Samuel, Kathryn, Isaiah, Ashley, Owen, Abigail, Jericho, and Cecilia. She is also survived by her brother-in-laws and their spouses: Dave and Maria Ladd, Jon and Brenda Ladd, William and Lynda Ladd and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Jeanne Ladd and by her mother-in-law Shirley Rochefort. Gertrude M. Fontaine
July 9, 1922 - May 29, 2013
Gertrude M. Fontaine, 90, of Derby, VT, passed away on May 29, 2013 in Newport, VT. She was born July 9, 1922 in Newport, VT a daughter of Charles and Mary Ann (Gokey) Cheney. On December 29, 1947 she married Lawrence Fontaine who survives her.
Mrs. Fontaine was Post Master for the United States Postal Service in the Town of Morgan where she retired after 12 years of service. She also worked as a telephone operator for several years in Troy, VT.
She enjoyed cooking much to the delight of her family and friends. She knitted 11,000 pair of mittens for charity and formerly worked on upholstery.
She and Lawrence made several trips to Florida over many years during the winter months. She was always willing to give a hand to her friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her husband Lawrence Fontaine of Derby, VT, by her children: Stephen Fontaine of Beecher Falls, VT, Dennis Fontaine and his wife Nancy of Twin MT, NH, and Laurie Fontaine of Derby, VT, by her grandchildren: Melanie Walker and her husband David, Stephen Fontaine and his wife Lauren, Sarah Fontaine, Brian Fontaine, Adam Fontaine, and by her great grandchildren: Jacob, Jonathan, and Jessalyn Walker, and by Tyler and Gavin Fontaine and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son Sherman Fontaine, by a grandson Matthew Fontaine and by the following siblings: Earl Cheney, Nelson Cheney, Maynard Cheney, Edna Liberty, and Rita Berthiaume.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line, VT where a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Muriel J. Webb, 80, of Island Pond, VT, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 13, 1934 in Berlin, NH, to Omer and Ruth (Hobbs) Lurvey. On October 25, 1952 she married Elmer Webb who predeceased her.
Mrs. Webb was tax collector for the Town of Brighton. She enjoyed maintaining her property and mowing the lawn. She loved flower gardening, playing the piano, bird watching, traveling throughout Vermont and making arts and crafts. She was also an avid reader.
She is survived by her children: Sharon Patenaude and her husband Rene of Newport Center, VT, Susan Webb of Island Pond, VT, James Webb of Island Pond, VT, and Sandy Frizzell and her husband Marty of Island Pond, VT, by her grandchildren: Shawn and Jason Patenaude, Celine Cote, Jimmy and Ashley Webb, Brittany and Fraser Frizzell. She is also survived by her great grandchildren: Dawson and Jordan Cote, Mya Patenaude, Elijah Patenaude, and Tyler Webb. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Shirley Dunn of North Troy, VT, Laura Morrissette of Johnson, VT and by numerous nieces and nephews. She loved her dog Newt. She was predeceased by two brothers Wayne and Wendell Lurvey.

Rejean Y. Lessard, 66, of Newport, passed away on July 19, 2019 in Newport. He was born on October 17, 1952 in Quebec to Jean Lessard and Fabienne Veilleux. On August 19, 1978 he married Janet Poutre who survives him.
Rejean was a former member and treasurer of the Newport Country Club and the Newport Eagles Club. He loved listening to music especially the Beatles, playing guitar, stamp collecting, playing cribbage and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife Janet Lessard, his children Matthew Lessard and his Fiancé Ryane Davis of Newport Center, VT, Ashlee LaRose and her husband Joseph of Newport, VT, as well as his grandson Evan Michael-Yves Lessard, his sisters France Lessard of Davie, FL and Suzie Wheeler and her husband Richard of Derby, VT. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Jennifer Provost, Kathy Blake, Karen Morgan and her husband Bernie, Martha Karpinski and her husband Jim, Colleen Bullis and her husband Tom, and brother-in-law Marc Poutre and his wife Mary.

Raymond H. Collins, Jr., 75, of Brownington, VT, passed away suddenly on May 9, 2014 at his home. He was born November 22, 1938 in Lebanon, NH to Raymond and Emma (Besaw) Collins, Sr. Mr. Collins was a machinist at Tivoly in Derby Line where he retired after 35 years of service. He enjoyed playing cards, playing bingo, telling jokes, hunting, fishing and camping. His favorite dog Snoopy passed away a couple of years ago but he now has his dog Bear.
He is survived by his beloved wife Birdena Collins of Brownington, VT, by his children: Mark Collins of Newport, VT, Douglas Collins, Sr and his wife Gloria of Brownington, VT, and Lori Collins and her fiancé Roger Calloway, Jr of Derby, VT.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Reginald Collins, Jr, Travis Collins, Dereck Collins, Tonya Calloway, Doug Collins, Jr, Amanda Collins, Jacob Calloway, Dakota Calloway, and Kevin Collins, by his great-grandchildren: Olivia Collins, Iziah Allen and Ayriel Allen. Herbert L. Blake, 90, of Newport, VT, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2014 in Barton, VT. He was born January 11, 1924 in Newport, VT, to Raymond and Julia (Leavens) Blake. On December 24, 1966 he married Lorraine Gray who survives him. Herbert was a veteran of WW11. He was employed by Yankee Milk Co in Troy for several years. He loved his horses and attending horse shows and raising laying hens.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 21 of Newport and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 both of Newport.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine Blake of Newport, VT, by his children: Linda Hahn and her husband Raymond of Wallingford, CT, Donna Laplume and her partner Joe Desrochers of Newport Center, VT, Robert Blake of FL, and Lisa Desroches and her husband Alan of Coventry, VT, by his step children: Harold Gage and his wife Jocelyne of Derby, VT, and Larry Gage and his wife Pauline of Newport, VT. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Herbert is survived by his sisters: Mary Jean Pierce and her husband Ken of Newport, VT and Hazel Fontaine of Newport, VT. He was predeceased by his brother Charlie Blake, his sisters Marion Kerr and Lucille Lague and by his step daughter Rosalyn Cook.
