Charles Moody Crain Charles Moody Crain, 72, of Hill Street, died Thursday, March 13, 1997 at the Central Vermont Medical Center. He was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on October 2, 1924, the son of the Reverend Orville Edward and Mae (Moody) Crain. He was a 1942 graduate of Brockton High School in Brockton, MA. He entered the United States Army in 1943 and served during World War II in the U.S. Infantry. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Mr. Crain earned his B.A. from Bowdoin College, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1947. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University in 1948 & 1952. On July 22, 1950 he married Anna Lillian Grieg Eide in Bergen, Norway. Mr. Crain was a college professor for 42 years. He was an Instructor of Foreign Languages at Bowdoin College and Colby College in Maine prior to joining the Norwich University faculty in Northfield in 1953. Mr. Crain had been the Norwich University Dean of Faculty, Vice President for External Affairs, Professor Emeritus and Department Chairman of Modern Languages, retiring from the University in 1992 after 39 years of service. He was active in the United Church of Christ in Northfield, where he had been a Deacon and an active member of the choir and various committees. He was also past president and charter member of the Northfield Historical Society, past president and member of the University Club of Northfield, and an active volunteer at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Personal interests included ornithology, bridge, Scrabble, genealogy and square dancing. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Anna Lillian Grieg Crain of Northfield; three sons, Christopher Grieg Crain and wife, Julie of Grass Valley, CA, Robin Grieg Crain and wife, Kim of Phoenix, AZ, Bruce Grieg Crain of New York City; his daughter, Anita Grieg Crain of Northfield; his sister, Verla Huff of Concord, NH; and one grandson, Kevin Roberts Crain of Phoenix, AZ. Mr. Crain is predeceased by three brothers, Alvin Crain, Loren Crain and Forrest Crain. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 18th at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Northfield. The Reverend Dr. Edward DeLong, Pastor, will officiate. Donations may be made in his memory to the United Church of Christ, PO Box 188, Northfield, VT 05663. Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield is in charge of the arrangements. Ella L. Cruickshank Funeral services for Ella L. Cruickshank, 97, who died at the Gifford Elder Care in Randolph, March 4, 1997, were conducted in The Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield, Saturday, March 8th at 2 p.m. The Reverend Wayne Jones, Pastor, United Methodist Church of Northfield officiated. Reflections were offered by Ella’s grandson, Robert Binns Jr. Burial will be in the family lot in Mount Hope Cemetery in Northfield this spring. Stella M. Lawson MIDDLEBURY - Stella M. Lawson, 94, died on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at the Addison House, where she had resided for the past year. She was born in Cookshire, Quebec, on May 29, 1903, the daughter of Olive and Michael Racicot. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She is survived by a son, G. Thomas Lawson and his wife Phyllis, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1957. A mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be at a later date in St. Johnsbury. Doris Lillian (Shackett) Cyr MIDDLEBURY - Doris Lillian (Shackett) Cyr, 78, died at her home on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998. She was born in Weybridge on April 21, 1919, to John and Phillian Shackett. She married Leonard Cyr on April 8, 1940. She was a homemaker and was employed as a housekeeper at Middlebury College. She is survived by her sons, Leonard (Sonny) and Robert (John) Cyr of Middlebury and Joseph Cyr of Weybridge; and her daughters, Laura Begnoche of Middlebury and Doris Pelkey of Vergennes. She was predeceased by her husband in 1995. A mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Middlebury. Burial took place following the service at St. Peter's Cemetery in Vergennes. Memorial contributions can be made to either the Addison County Home Health or Hospice Services of Addison County. Nancy Louise Ogg BRANDON - Nancy MacKay Ogg, 69, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at Shard Villa in Salisbury. She was born in New Haven, Conn., on Feb. 2, 1928. She was the daughter of John Ralph and Ruth (Bradley) MacKay. She received her early education in Meriden, Conn., schools and graduated from Meriden High School. She continued her education at Skidmore College. She received her degree in 1949. She had served as class president. She had been very active in the Episcopal Church in Cheshire, Conn. On Sept. 24, 1988, she married Charles A. "Chick" Ogg in Cheshire, Conn. They made their home in Brandon, where she was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She was very active at St. Thomas, serving as senior warden and in other various duties. She had volunteered for the Brandon Free Public Library, and was an active artist with oils, watercolors and pastels throughout her life. Surviving are one daughter, Jaye P. Bonsignor of Buckland, Mass.; one son, Mark B. Bonsignor of Portland, Ore.; two stepdaughters, Lynn Bowden of Dorset and Sandy Strickhart of Hopewell, N.J.; one stepson, Charles G. Ogg of Chittenden; many grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband in 1992 and one brother, Alec MacKay. There will be no public calling hours.
