Richard Brian Parry
Richard Brian Parry, 60, died icon on September 25, 2002, at his home in San Jose, California. Mr. Parry was born icon on October 2, 1941, in Westerly, Rhode Island, the son of John Edward Parry and Laurette Annette (Belair) Parry. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1961 as a light mechanic and was honorably discharged on March 20, 1961. He later worked for Sylvania Corporation and after that at California Microwave Incorporated as a project engineer. At the time of his death, he was employed by CRJ Electric of San Jose as project manager. He is survived by his wife, Gail; by his son Brent Marini and his wife, Christina, and their son Joseph; by his siblings: John and Joan Parry of Orleans, Carol Goin of Visalia, California, and Donald and Suzanne Parry of West Warwick, Rhode Island. He was predeceased by his father and mother, John and Laurette Parry; and by his sister Judy Ann Welch. Other survivors include nieces and nephews: Jeffrey Parry, Jonathan and Janice Parry, Ed and Laurie Longo, Carol Parry, Kelly Krieger, John Krieger, Danny Krieger, Edwin Lewis, Michael Goin, and Annette Goin. A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 19, at Pleasant View Cemetery icon in Orleans.

Theresa F. Stuart
Theresa F. Stuart, 74, of Northfield, New Hampshire, died icon Saturday, January 11, 2003, at Franklin Regional Hospital in Franklin, New Hampshire. Mrs. Stuart was born icon in Newport on February 23, 1928, the daughter of Clarence and Eva (Morse) Hill. She was raised in the Newport area and later resided in Danville. She was a resident of Farmington, New Hampshire, for four years before moving to Northfield three years ago. Family members include six children: Clarence F. Stuart of Northfield, Richard L. Stuart of St. Johnsbury Center, Gretchen A. Stuart of Hardwick, James M. Stuart of St. Johnsbury, Priscilla P. Tetreault of East Barnet, and Maria F. Stuart of Lipan, Texas; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence Hill of Newport Center and Dean Hill Sr. of Newport; four sisters: Alena Sherlaw of Newport Center, Helen Rainey of Lyndonville, June Stuart of Barre, and Dwanetta Bickford of Derby; and nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held January 16 in Paquette-Neun Funeral Home in Northfield, New Hampshire. Burial will be in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery icon in Newport. Donations in memory of Mrs. Stuart may be made to a charity of one's choice.

George Prevost
George Prevost, 76, of Detroit, Michigan, and formerly of Derby, died icon January 27, 2003. Mr. Prevost was a longtime employee of the Detroit Free Press and will be greatly missed by friends and relatives. He was the beloved husband of the late Hilda. He is also survived by his son Eric and his wife, Ellen; by his brothers and sister: Roger of Barton, Richard of Derby, and Marguerite Smyrski of Montpelier; by many nieces and nephews; and by his granddog, Mikie. Lawrence J. MacLeod
Lawrence J. MacLeod, 74, of Derby died icon peacefully February 1, 2003, in Newport surrounded by his family. Mr. MacLeod was born icon November 26, 1928, in Derby, a son of John and Blanche (Hayward) MacLeod. On April 6, 1947, he married icon Pauline Fortin, who survives him. He was a security guard for Union Butterfields for 29 years, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and collecting coins and baseball cards. He is survived by his wife, Pauline MacLeod, of Derby; by four children: Linda MacLeod of Port St. Joe, Florida, Deborah Stratton and her husband, Wayne, of Stanstead, Quebec, Scott MacLeod of Albany, New York, and Shirley Sumner and her husband, William, of Derby; by the following grandchildren: Vicky Watson, Corena Bursey, Julie Lucas, Megan Stratton, Corey Stratton, Sherri Stratton, David Sumner, and Thomas Sumner; by eight great-grandchildren: Gregory Lucas, Ashley Corkins, Brittaney Corkins, Danielle Lucas, Rebecca Simons, Kristie Rivers, Christopher Rivers, and Schylynn Stewart; by a sister, Marion LaPlante, and her husband, Arthur, of Bristol, Connecticut; and by several nieces and nephews from Bristol. Funeral services were held February 4 with the Reverend Jim Beauregard officiating. Spring interment will be held in Derby Center Cemetery. Pauline A. (Coe) Lemay
Pauline A. (Coe) Lemay, 86, died icon January 30, 2003, at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Florida. Mrs. Lemay was born icon on December 18, 1916, in Island Pond, daughter of Miles and Yvonne Coe. She married icon Emile Lemay on September 20, 1933. They celebrated their sixty-ninth anniversary in 2002. Besides her husband she is survived by the following children: Paul Lemay and wife, Leona, of West Burke, Jeanine Marcotte and her husband, Gerald, of Bellingham, Maine, Emily Morin and her husband, Raymond, of St. Cloud, Delores Lapierre and her husband, William, of Derby, Bernard Lemay and his wife, Kay, of Kingville, Texas; by 18 grandchildren; by 29 great-grandchildren; by three great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Evelyn Bishop, of Lyndonville. Agnes Elizabeth Laubenheimer
Agnes Elizabeth Laubenheimer, 92, of Morgan died icon peacefully in Newport on Sunday, February 2, 2003. Mrs. Laubenheimer was born icon in West New York, New Jersey, on March 3, 1910, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Schlaefer) Meyer. On July 20, 1937, she married icon William John Laubenheimer, who predeceased her. She was a resident of Harrington Park, New Jersey, for over 35 years. She was a member of the Gray Ladies Hospital Auxiliary in Germany and was an active military wife. She was a lover of the outdoors, flowers, and nature and enjoyed gardening and raising her four boys. She was a Cub Scout leader and a member of Morgan United Church. She is survived by her sons: Robert Lauben and his wife, Lynn, of West Simsbury, Connecticut, Russell Laubenheimer and his wife, Barbara, of Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, the Reverend Richard Laubenheimer and his wife, Nancy, of Enfield, New Hampshire, and formerly of Quechee, and Bruce Lauben and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Riverdale, New Jersey; by her grandchildren: David Lauben, Steven Lauben, Sandy Lauben, Cheryl Lauben, Dawn L. Tracey, Sherri-Anne Laubenheimer, Tim Laubenheimer, Mark Laubenheimer, and Anne Vitello; and by her great-grandchildren Jacob and Adam Lauben. She was predeceased by her sister Edna J. Meyer. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, February 8, at Morgan United Church at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Michael DeSena officiating. Clayton H. Hoadley Jr.
Clayton H. Hoadley Jr., 70, of Lowell died icon Monday evening, January 27, 2003, in Burlington, following open-heart surgery. Mr. Hoadley was the beloved husband of Beverly (Armstrong) Hoadley, who he married icon on March 27, 1954. He was born icon on October 20, 1932, in Lowell, the only child of the late Florence Souther and Clayton "Bookie" Hoadley Sr. He attended Lowell Elementary School and graduated from Newport Center High School in 1952. He operated the family farm on Route 100 in Lowell, taking it over from his parents and spending his entire life there. He also did the mail route from Newport to Eden Mills for many years. He held many offices for the town of Lowell, serving on the local school board and the North Country Union High School board. He was also a bus driver, tax collector, and constable. He received citations for his many years of service to the town of Lowell and the state of Vermont. He was also very active in farm organizations, serving as chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service for many years and as a delegate for the United Farmers. He also held other offices. He enjoyed playing cards with his family and enjoyed numerous trips since his retirement, going on many of them with Community Circle. He also enjoyed going to Rutland to spend time with his sister-in-law Barbara and her husband, Leon Judd. He volunteered his time for the Orleans County Triad. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Beverly (Armstrong) Hoadley; by his children: David Hoadley Sr. and his wife, Victoria, of Lowell, Janice McGuire and her husband, Stephen, of Wilder, Donna Labbee and her friend, Thomas Deslandes, of North Troy, and Nancy Cote and her husband, Ronald, of Newport Center; by his grandchildren: David Jr. and Anthony Hoadley, Samantha and Ryan McGuire, Lisa Sargent, Dennis Labbee, Joshua and Trey Therrien, and Brittany Cote; by five great-grandchildren; by many stepgrandchildren; and by stepgreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by his aunt A. Fern Souther of Burlington; by his uncle Sterling Souther of Hyde Park; and by his brothers- and sisters-in-law: Barbara and Leon Judd, Roger and Isabelle Armstrong, Lorene and William Graham, Leonard and June Armstrong, and William Armstrong; and by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Erland C. Gjessing
Erland C. Gjessing, 91, of Westmore died icon of a stroke on January 30, 2003. Mr. Gjessing was a former professor of biochemistry at the University of Vermont Medical School. During his career, he also worked at the University of Virginia and Harvard Medical School. He earned his doctorate at Cornell University. He spent several years conducting research in Cali, Columbia, before retiring in 1976. In 1980 he and his wife, Ruth Gjessing, moved full-time to their home, Elvehoj, in Westmore. He was predeceased by his first wife, Polly; and by two younger brothers, Fred and John Gjessing. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; by his sister-in-law Helen Gjessing of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; by his stepchildren: Timothy Steele and his wife, Vicki, of Los Angeles, California, Bradley Steele and his wife, Margaret Lowry, and their children Peter and Laura of Winchester, Massachusetts, and Martha Steele of Arlington, Massachusetts, and her friend, Bob Stymeist; by his niece Catherine Gjessing and her husband, Jim McCarthy, of Duxbury; by his nephews: Jonathan Gjessing of St. Thomas and Hakon Gjessing and his wife, Jean, of Landsdown, Pennsylvania; and by his cousins John Fife and his wife, Alice, of Greensport, Long Island, and Glover. A memorial service will be held at the First Universalist Parish of Derby Line on Saturday, February 15, at 1 p.m. A celebration of his life will also be held at Elvehoj on June 28. Lyndel L. Hall
Lyndel L. Hall, 39, of Albany, died icon at his home on Friday, January 31, 2003. Mr. Hall was born icon in Albany on October 11, 1963, the son of Clarence and Lillian (Peters) Hall. He enjoyed hunting and being with his children. He is survived by his children: Tom Hall of East Charleston, Heather Hall of East Charleston, Amanda Hall of Albany, and Axl Hall of Albany; by his companion, Denise Errington, of Albany; by his brother Nason Hall of Lyndonville; and by his sister Linda Molleur of Springfield. He was predeceased by his parents; and by one sister, Nancy. Sidney F. Austin
Sidney F. Austin, 80, of Sheffield and formerly of Needham, Massachusetts, died icon suddenly at his home Tuesday evening, January 28, 2003. Mr. Austin was born icon July 28, 1922, in Barton, the son of the late Arthur O. and Carolyn M. (Perry) Austin. He graduated from Orleans High School in the class of 1940. In 1944 he graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, where he was class president and also president of the NEZ fraternity. Later he served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. In 1962 he received his master's degree in education from Northeastern. On September 5, 1953, he married icon Patricia A. "Pat" White. They lived in Needham for many years. He worked at Northeastern University for over 30 years, retiring as the dean and director of the department of career development and placement. He was the founder and first president of the New England Association for Cooperative Education and Field Experience and was active in several other education groups as well. He authored and co-authored books on cooperative education and career development for students and faculty. He had been very active in the alumni at Northeastern University, as well as collegiate and national level organizations. After retiring to Vermont he and his wife, Pat, volunteered at the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury. He was an active in democratic town politics in Sheffield and was an avid woodworker and furniture builder. He even built his own canoe. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family at their camp on Long Pond in Westmore. Survivors include his son David Austin and his companion, Beverly Jene, of Calais; his daughter Carol Woodard and her husband, Roland, and their children Ethan and Catherine of Sheffield; two brothers, Perry Austin of Orleans and Warren Austin and his wife, Lois, of Orleans; two brothers-in-law, Thomas White of Ocoee, Florida, and William Beaumier of Massachusetts; many nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog Lady. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Austin, in June 2002; by two brothers, Robert and Stanley Austin; and by his sister Frances Beaumier. A memorial service was held February 1 at Lyndonville First Congregational Church with the Reverend Joan Vincent officiating. Burial in Newton, Massachusetts, will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring. Lois (Guy) Hammond
Lois (Guy) Hammond, 76, of Newport Center died icon July 21, 2003, in Newport. Mrs. Hammond was born icon July 19, 1927, in Newport, a daughter of Lewis and Violet (Henderson) Guy. On January 11,1948, she married icon Lyle William Hammond, who predeceased her on October 15, 2001. She graduated from Burdette Business College in Boston, Massachusetts. She began her career as legal secretary for a law office in St. Johnsbury. After her marriage she was a helpmate with the family farm in Newport Center for more than 30 years. She later was employed as a secretary to Phil Rowell at Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Orleans for several years. She held membership with the American Legion Post No. 21 Auxiliary of Newport for 22 years. She is survived by her children: Lynn O'Leary of Waterville, Laurel Hammond and her husband, Neal Smith, of Fletcher, and Leslie Hammond and his wife, Donna, Leonard Hammond and his wife, JoAnne, and Charles Hammond and his wife, Jean, all of Newport Center; by 15 grandchildren; by 14 great-grandchildren; by the following sister and brothers: Phyllis Jones of Ludlow, George Guy of St. Johnsbury, Donald Guy and his wife, Norma, of Ludlow, and Ronald Guy of Lyndonville; by a sister-in-law, Vivian Urie, of Newport; by brother-in-law Winston Hammond and his wife, Lucille, of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. John E. Aldrich
John E. Aldrich, 61, of Hadlyme, Connecticut, died icon July 21, 2003, in Middletown, Connecticut. Mr. Aldrich was born icon July 11, 1942, in Windsor, a son of Marion (Fox) Aldrich and the late Roderic Aldrich. On July 30, 1966, he married icon Neta Brooks, who survives him. He was a heavy equipment operator for K.C. Mazer Company in Connecticut. He enjoyed working with the earth, not only on a job but to dig stones, rocks, etc., for use in landscaping and any other use his clients may have had. Family was a big part of his life and he loved family gatherings. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with family members. He enjoyed wildlife in general. He is survived by his wife, Neta Aldrich, of Hadlyme; by his mother, Marion Aldrich, of Brownington; by the following children: Tim Aldrich of New Hampshire, Rodney Aldrich and his wife, Everlyn, of Richford, Ronald Aldrich of Richford, Wanda Sorrelle and her husband, David, of East Hampton, Connecticut, Ted Aldrich and his wife, Tammy, of West Charleston, Michael Aldrich and his dear friend, Kim, of Ocala, Florida, and David Aldrich and his wife, Sharon, of Haddam, Connecticut; by 15 grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; by two brothers, Michael Aldrich and his wife, Claire, of Isle LaMont and Steven Aldrich and his wife, Linda, of Brownington; by a sister, Gail McKenna, and her husband, Tim, of Jericho; and by several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was predeceased by a granddaughter. Funeral services were held July 26 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Eva E. Coderre
Eva E. Coderre, 68, of Irasburg, died icon Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Bel-Aire Nursing Home in Newport. Mrs. Coderre was born icon July 18, 1935, in Albany, the daughter of the late Abner and Eulalee (Shedd) Poutry. She attended Albany public schools. She married icon Marcel Coderre on August 21, 1954, in Barton. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, and craft work. Survivors include her husband, Marcel and a daughter, Verna Coderre, both of Irasburg; a brother, Olmand Poutry and his wife, Ethel, of Clinton, Massachusetts; two sisters, Bessie Poutry of Rockingham, North Carolina, and Dorcas Suitor and her husband, David, of Swanton; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter, Vanesa Coderre; and a brother, Percy Poutry. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 26, 2003, at the United Church of Irasburg with the Reverend Rona Anderson officiating. Burial followed in the Craftsbury Village Cemetery. Archie J. Gillis
Archie J. Gillis, 78, a longtime resident of Island Pond, died icon peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at his home. Mr. Gillis was born icon in Island Pond on March 29, 1925, the son of George and Maria (St. Pierre) Gillis. He attended St. Mary's School as a youth. He served his country during World War II in the Philippines as a harbor craft operator for the U.S. Army. As a private first class, he was responsible for transporting men and supplies from ship to shore. He worked for the Canadian National Railroad for over 30 years as a bridge and building engineer. He was a member of American Legion Island Pond Post No. 80 and of Veterans of Foreign Wars Island Pond Random Post No. 2309. He enjoyed trips to Alaska and North Carolina with his wife, hunting and fishing locally and in Alaska, and riding around on the back roads and woods watching the wildlife. He loved working with wood, making many gifts for family and friends. On February 2, 1952, he married icon Alice R. Carr, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Dave Gillis and his wife, Linda, of North Carolina, Betty Biggs and her husband, Paul, of Barre, Brian Gillis of Shelburne, Steve Gillis and his wife, Laura, of Alaska, and Donna Chesney and her husband, Roger, of Island Pond; by his brother J. Albert Gillis of Burlington; by 14 grandchildren; by six great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Scott; and by his sister Gertrude Bulakites. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 26 at St. James Catholic Church with the Reverend William Morgan officiating. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery icon in Island Pond with military honors. Lillian F. Swanson, 86, of Orleans died icon peacefully October 11, 2003, in Barton. Mrs. Swanson was born icon June 7, 1917, in Brownington, a daughter of Ora and Lillian (Spencer) Woods. On August 14, 1937, she married icon Edward Swanson, who predeceased her. She was a member of Orleans Federated Church and was a 50-year member of the Brownington Homemakers. She was a member of the So-Co Knit Christmas Club and the Pythian Sisters. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and she had both young and old friends throughout her lifetime. She is survived by four children: Janice Dewing and her husband, Russell, of Inverness, Florida, Sandra Wilcox and her husband, Larry, of Orleans, Linda Thatcher and her husband, William, of Searsport, Maine, and Douglas Swanson and his wife, Shirley, of Orleans; by six grandchildren; by three great-grandchildren; and by cousins. Funeral services were held October 13 at Orleans Federated Church with the Reverend Bruce Forbes officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasantview Cemetery icon in Orleans. Elwin Paul Shufelt, 52, of Holland and formerly of Nashua, New Hampshire, died icon at his home on October 9, 2003. Mr. Shufelt was born icon June 20, 1951, in St. Johnsbury, a son of Vanessa Stone and the late Arnold Shufelt Sr. On December 27, 1969, he married icon Adelle Fortin, who survives him. During his lifetime, he was a self-employed carpenter. He is survived by his wife, Adelle Shufelt, of Holland; by a daughter Dafney A. Funeral services were held October 13 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Marlene "Skeet" M. Phillips
Marlene "Skeet" M. Phillips, 67, of Irasburg died icon peacefully October 9, 2003, in Newport with her family at her side. Mrs. Phillips was born icon May 24, 1936, in St. Johnsbury, a daughter of Raymond and Naomi (Lathe) Lafoe. She graduated from Orleans High School in 1954. On July 14, 1956, she married icon Roderick Phillips, who survives her. She was a strong-willed woman who spent her life serving others ù from working at a small drug store in Arizona to waitressing at the Candlepin Restaurant. She and her husband made their home in Barton for 43 years and recently moved to Irasburg. She was a bookkeeper at the Gulf Service Station in Barton (owned by her and her husband) for 17 years. In recent years she survived lung cancer after being diagnosed in 1985 and traveled in all 50 states with her husband in their fifth-wheel trailer. She also cherished the quality time spent with her family. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, knitting, camping, and hosting gatherings filled with food, friends, and fun. She is survived by her husband, Roderick Phillips, of Irasburg; by her children Michael R. Phillips of Cabot and Martha Perron and her husband, David, of Glover; by four grandchildren: Courtney Phillips, Roy Phillips, and Phillip and Elizabeth Perron; by a sister, Hilda Dwyer, and her husband, Norman, of Brownington; by a sister-in-law Rolinda Chase and her husband, Linwood, of Irasburg; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two infant sons, Karl Lawrence and Mark Roy. A memorial service was held October 13 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton with the Reverend Don Vincent officiating. Interment followed in Irasburg Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in her memory may be made to the Palliative Care Program, in care of Nicki Vonheeder, Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center, Bel-Aire Drive, Newport, Vermont 05855. Arrangements are by Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Homes.

Nancy Nelson
Nancy Nelson, 66, of Hartford, Connecticut, formerly of Island Pond, died icon October 1, 2003, in Hartford Hospital following a long illness. Mrs. Nelson is survived by her two sons, Sidney Nelson of Island Pond and Steven Nelson of Hartford; by her mother, Evelyn Hannon, of Island Pond; by two sisters, Susan Briggs of Island Pond and Marilyn Hennessy of Plymouth, Massachusetts; by one aunt; one uncle; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, William Hannon, of Waterbury, Connecticut; and by an infant nephew, Michael Thomas Cooper, of Hartford. A memorial service was held and arrangements made at the Chapel Memorial Funeral Home with a burial at Calvary Cemetery icon in Waterbury, Connecticut.
