Esther May Lafoe
Esther May Lafoe, 72, of Orleans died icon peacefully Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Mrs. Lafoe was born icon on February 17, 1933, in Orleans, a daughter of Tom and Mabel (Lacoss) Crawshaw. On December 4, 1939, she married icon Wesley Lafoe, who predeceased her in 1966. She held memberships with the Lake Region Senior Center and the Orleans Mothers Club. She enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, and gardening. She loved receiving visits from her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed baking and passed on her cooking talents to the interested granddaughters. She also loved playing the piano and singing with her friend Ann Berrio. She is survived by her children: Carol Whittier of Coventry, Gary Lafoe of Orleans, Rick Lafoe of Newport, and Brian Lafoe and his wife, Judy, of Orleans and by her cherished 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held June 18 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Gerry Piper officiating. Interment followed at the Brownington Village Cemetery. Kathren J. Kittredge
Kathren J. Kittredge, 67, of Orleans died icon Saturday, June 18, 2005, in Lyndonville at her daughter's home. Born in Whitefish, Montana, on March 5, 1938, Mrs. Kittredge was a daughter of William and Camilla (Krecklow) Johnson. She was predeceased by her husband Paul P. Kittredge, to whom she was married icon nearly 45 years. He died icon July 20, 2001. She worked at Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Orleans and was an accomplished master chair weaver there. She was a multitalented lady who loved gardening, refinishing furniture, doing ceramics, cooking, crocheting, collecting family genealogy, and just spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the United Church of Derby. She is survived by five children and 18 grandchildren ù Lorna Gaylor and her husband, Mike, of Barton and their two children, Corinna and Lisa; Linda Lachance and her husband, Tom, of Lyndonville, her four children: Liane, Daniel, Raelyn, and Samantha and his three children: James, Eric, and Tim; Luella Kittredge of Puyallup, Washington, and her three children: Courtney, Meghan, and Jordan; Paul Kittredge Jr. and his wife, Sonya, of Albany and their two children, Benjamin and Matthew; and Deanna Simpson and her husband, Glenn, of Fernley, Nevada, and their four children: Patrick, Dalton, Dillon, and Rebecca. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Marilyn, Angela, Haley, and Allie; by one sister, Iola Winters, and her husband, Charles, of Missoula, Montana; by one brother, William Johnson, and his wife, CiCi, of Kalispell, Montana; by one sister-in-law, Leah Kittredge, of Beebe Plain; and by nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister Ellen Barlow and brother Thomas Johnson. Jeffrey A. Kinsey
Jeffrey A. Kinsey, 48, died icon at his home in West Glover on Sunday morning, June 26, 2005, following a battle with cancer. Mr. Kinsey was born icon in Hardwick on May 6, 1957, a son of Eunice Rowell Kinsey of Craftsbury and the late Robert E. Kinsey. He was a 1975 graduate of Craftsbury Academy and had attended Vermont Technical College, the University of Arizona, and the University of Vermont. He married icon Elizabeth R. Nelson and operated a dairy farm on the Andersonville Road in West Glover. He was a good husband to Liz, a good father to her sons, a good friend, and a good farmer. He also had worked as a carpenter and contractor. He enjoyed golfing and loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Nelson, of West Glover; by his mother, Eunice Kinsey of Craftsbury; by three sons: James Coe and his wife, Nella, and their children Isabella and Jude, Eric Coe and his daugher Rachel of Milton, and Jesse Coe and his wife, Mandy, and their children Gage and Samuel of Barton; by two brothers, Erwin Kinsey and his wife, Esther, of Arusha, Tanzania, and Earl Kinsey and his wife, Joanna, of South Albany; by three sisters: Jennie Stanger and her husband, John, of Dundee, Michigan, Emily Dearborn and her husband, Jeff, of Hyde Park, and Valerie Kinsey of Hardwick; by a sister-in-law, Margo Eastman, of Craftsbury; and by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Bob Kinsey, in March 2005; and by a brother, Everett Kinsey. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 1, at 2 p.m., at the East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Jack Cabaness officiating. Joseph Hermel Roy
Joseph Hermel Roy, 74, of Coventry died icon at the Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center on Saturday, June 25, 2005, after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Roy was born icon on August 6, 1930, in Ste. Anne, New Brunswick, a son of Joseph Philippe and Alvine (Berube) Roy. As a boy, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating on the St. Johns River, woodworking, playing hockey, and figure skating. He made a skating rink for the enjoyment of the town. As a young adult he traveled throughout Canada before moving to MontrTal, where he worked as a licensed detective. Because his father was an American, Mr. Roy was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He served 13 months in Korea. After an honorable discharge he moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he met and married icon his wife. While living in Connecticut he was an interior decorator. He had lived in Atkinson and Plastow, New Hampshire, but he spent most of his life in Waltham, Marlboro, and Haverhill, Massachusetts, where he owned his own service stations. He was later employed at Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, prior to retiring to Vermont in 1987. He was a lifetime member of Amvets Post No. 147 in Haverhill and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 798 in Newport. He enjoyed fishing and hunting as an adult as well. He was an avid artist and particularly enjoyed carving old sailing ships and flowers and landscapes on large pine slabs, some of which were turned into coffee tables. He enjoyed doing oil paintings, particularly beach and ocean scenes. He enjoyed building ships in five-gallon water bottles. He was interested in the study of weather and astronomy. He enjoyed gazing at the stars year-round. He enjoyed the family cat, Tom. He loved the ocean and spending time at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rosemarie; his daughter Robin Smith and her husband, Reginald, of Derby; grandchildren Reginald Charles Smith Jr. of Castleton and Dustin of Derby; his son Christopher of Coventry; several in-laws and nieces and nephews; his twin brother, Albert, and his wife, Anita, of New Brunswick; and his brother Raymond of Raymond, Quebec. He was predeceased by brothers Oneil and Omer; by his parents; and by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins in New Brunswick. A graveside service was held June 28 at the Coventry Cemetery icon with the Reverend Robert Castle officiating. Lorraine Taplin Conley
Lorraine Taplin Conley of Derby died icon June 25, 2005, at home. Mrs. Conley was born icon in Charleston in 1925. She graduated from Lyndon Normal School and taught in Coventry, Newport Center, and Newport City schools. She was involved in the antique business and in the family business, Conley Country Real Estate. Playing bridge, gardening, and family were most important to her. She was survived by her son Michael and his partner, Dr. Glen Elder, of Derby and Burlington; by her daughter Jackie Young and her husband, Ken, of Derby; by her grandchildren: Amanda Conley of Burlington, Jonathan Young of Telluride, Colorado, and Christopher Young and his wife, Meredith of Jay; and by great-grandchildren McAllister and Jackson Young of Jay. She was predeceased by a son, Jon, in 1975, and by her husband, Dale, on June 24. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. John "George" Letrick
John "George" Letrick, 87, of Island Pond died icon in Barton on Monday, June 20, 2005. Mr. Letrick was born icon in Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania, on April 12, 1918, a son of Andrew and Catherine (Frank) Letrick. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. At 16 years of age, he worked in the coal mines in Pennsylvania. He then worked as a foreman for Bower Bearing Company in Detroit, Michigan. He was also a semi-pro boxer, known as "Young Letrick." He was also known by his CB handle "Squeeky Moccasin." He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Island Pond, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Island Pond Random Post No. 2309, and a member of American Legion Island Pond Post No. 80. He was very proud of his service time and of being a member of the Legion and VFW. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and he especially loved to hunt elk out West. On February 12, 1972, he married icon Ann Carbonneau, who survives him. He is also survived by his stepchildren Patricia Pelletier of Newburgh, Indiana, and William Pelletier and his wife, Beverly, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; by his stepgrandchildren: Janet, David, Aimee, Adriana, and Breea; and by his stepgreat-grandchildren, Zachariah and Ansel. He was the father and grandfather figure to these children in every way. He was predeceased by his brothers Emil and Albert. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Leo G. LaMadeleine, 67, of Derby died icon in Burlington on Tuesday, June 21, 2005. Mr. LaMadeleine was born icon in West Glover on August 25, 1937, a son of Camille and Edna (Collette) LaMadeleine. He served in the U.S. Army and worked for 32 years at Ethan Allen. He was a member of American Legion Orleans Post No. 23. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, maple sugaring, and carpentry, and loved his dog Princess. On July 21, 1980, he married icon Darlene Sylvester, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Doreen LaMadeleine of Newport, Dave LaMadeleine and his wife, Pam, of Orleans, Darryl LaMadeleine and his wife, Debbie, of West Glover, Darlene Rutherford and her husband, Bob, of Kansas, Debbie LaMadeleine of New Hampshire, Cindy Persha and her husband, Sam, of Derby, and John Crowley and his wife, Lisa, of Massachusetts; by his brothers Ed LaMadeleine and his friend, Margaret, of Pennsylvania and Ronald LaMadeleine and his wife, Elaine, of Newport; by his sisters: Alice Russo and her husband, Matty, of Connecticut, Laurette Fontaine and her husband, Lionel, of Barton, Helen Fontaine and her husband, Gerard, of Barton, and Rachel Cercola and her husband, Larry, of Florida; by 13 grandchildren; and by four great-grandchildren. Mr. Jewer was born icon in Medford, Massachusetts, on May 18, 1934, a son of Harold J. and Mary (MacQuarrie) Jewer. He worked in security in Massachusetts. He was a 28-year member of the Elks Lodge in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. He moved to Vermont ten years ago to be closer to his family. He loved to fish, play pool, and play cards, and he loved the ocean. Arthur Robert Hill
Arthur Robert Hill, 83, a lifelong resident of Greensboro, died icon Monday, June 27, 2005, on the family farm in Greensboro Bend. Mr. Hill was born icon February 24, 1922, in Greensboro, a son of the late Abner and Mary (Dennison) Hill. He attended Greensboro public schools and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1940. On August 1, 1949, he married icon Marilyn Etta Weeks in Hardwick. In his earlier years he worked as a farmhand. In 1955 he purchased a dairy farm in Greensboro Bend where he farmed for more than 50 years. He never retired. He was a member of the Greensboro Bend United Methodist Church. He had a pilot's license. He loved flying, his family, his farm animals, and especially his dog Little Dude. Other enjoyments included hunting and flower gardening. He is survived by two sons, Charles "Chuck" Hill and Thomas Hill, both of Greensboro Bend; three daughters: Deborah Willey and Sarah Bellavance, both of Greensboro Bend, and Susan Hill of Stannard; by 13 grandchildren; by seven great-grandchildren; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, in 1993; by five brothers: George, Everett, Earl, Foster, and Edward Hill; and by five sisters: Anna Markson, Clara Stanley, Gladys Hill, Dorothy Dawson, and Florence McKay. There will be no visiting hours. Alfred A. Gleason
Alfred A. Gleason, 76, of Newport died icon peacefully June 26, 2005, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Gleason was born icon March 13, 1929, in Barton, a son of Olin and Laura (Gugere) Gleason. He married icon Hilda Hart, who survives him. He was employed for many years by the city of Newport where he was an equipment operator. He was a veteran of World War II. He liked going to his camp in Holland, and he was known to spend much time there hunting and fishing and enjoying the outdoors. He enjoyed family members stopping at his home to say hi. He was a past member of the Newport Fire Department. Dale Merton Conley
Dale Merton Conley of Derby died icon June 24, 2005, in Newport. Mr. Conley was born icon in Westmore in 1918. He was a veteran of World War II, serving for two years in the island-hopping campaigns in the Pacific. He attended University of Vermont, where he was active in Cakewalk productions, graduating in 1947. His first teaching job was in Woodstock. In 1950 he brought his family to Derby, where he taught at Derby Academy. While teaching, he also ran a dairy farm and started a real estate and insurance business. After retiring from teaching, he worked full time in the business, Conley Country Real Estate and Insurance. He held offices in the Elks and the Lions clubs and was a Shriner. He was survived by his wife, Lorraine (Taplin) Conley, of Derby who died icon June 25, 2005. He is survived by his son Michael and his partner, Dr. Glen Elder, of Derby and Burlington; by his daughter Jackie Young and her husband, Ken, of Derby; by his grandchildren: Amanda Conley of Burlington, Jonathan Young of Telluride, Colorado, and Christopher Young and his wife, Meredith, of Jay; and by great-grandchildren McAllister and Jackson Young of Jay. Peter King Billings, 45, of Newport died icon at his home on Monday, June 21, 2005. Mr. Billings was born icon in Gunnison, Colorado, on November 2, 1959, a son of Edward A. and Grace A. (Dresser) Billings. He enjoyed playing the guitar, and he was a member of several bands. He is survived by his parents, Edward and Grace Billings, of Barton; by his brothers Jonathan A. Billings and his family of Fairfax, Virginia, and Ethan A. Billings and his family of Juneau, Alaska; by his aunts: Carolyn Falby and her husband, Clifford, of Exeter, Rhode Island, Joan Apel and her husband, George, of Vernon, Connecticut, and Janet Belber and her husband, Jerry, of Brimfield, Massachusetts; and by several cousins. Kerry S. Atherton
Kerry S. Atherton, 45, of Keene, New Hampshire, died icon June 16, 2005, at her home after a brief illness. Ms. Atherton was born icon in Burlington on February 17, 1960, a daughter of Kenneth L. Atherton and Myrtle M. (Reil) Atherton. She lived in Craftsbury before moving to the Keene area 20 years ago. She received an associate's degree from Keene State College, and at the time of her death had worked at the college for 15 years as an administrative secretary. She was a volunteer for many nonprofit organizations throughout the area, especially those benefiting women. She compiled a cookbook and worked with foreign exchange students at Keene State College. Survivors include two sons, Travis J. Atherton of Keene and Casey J. Cumings of Deerfield, New Hampshire; a daughter, Abigail L. Cumings, of Keene; a granddaughter, Cheyanne L. Atherton, of Keene; two brothers, Kenneth Atherton and his wife, Susan, of Craftsbury and Larry Atherton and his wife, Linda, of Newport; a sister, Shirley Nelson, and her husband, Donald, of Albany; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and by a brother, Woodrow. A memorial service was held at Foley Funeral Home in Keene on June 21. Burial will be held at the Branch Cemetery icon in Craftsbury at the convenience of the family.

Arlene R. Simons
Arlene R. Simons, 85, of Barton, died icon in Glover on Sunday, August 7, 2005. Ms. Simons was born icon in Barton on January 28, 1920, a daughter of Wallace C. Sr. and Eva (Govro) Russell. She began teaching in 1938 and was the principal at the Barton Academy and Graded School, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Orleans-Northern Essex County Retired Teachers Association. She was a life member of the Parent Teacher Association and a life member of the national and state Granges. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Orient Chapter No. 13, the Tuan Ti Christmas Club, the Barton United Church, and the Northeast Kingdom Horseman s Association through 2004. On July 6, 1949, she married icon Norman Simons, who predeceased her in 1996. She is survived by her niece Pat Russell of Barton; by her nephews Brian Russell and his wife, Kim, of Newport and Kevin Russell and his wife, Anita, of Barton; by their families; and by the family of Clayton Russell. She was predeceased by her brothers Darrell and Wallace Jr.; by her sisters Madeline and Karlene; and by her nephew Clayton Russell. Lee Swanson Buckland
Lee Swanson Buckland, 86, of Holderness, New Hampshire, died icon August 1, 2005, at Speare Hospital in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Born in Newport on July 14, 1919, Mr. Buckland was a son of Arthur and Emma (Swanson) Buckland. He grew up in Newport and graduated from Newport High School. He became a resident of Plymouth in 1947 and had resided in Holderness for many years. He also spent many winters in Leesburg, Florida. In 1941 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 286th Coast Artillery in the Pacific Theater. He served in the Fiji Islands, Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and the Philippines and was discharged in 1945. On June 22, 1946, he married icon Alida White of Ryegate. In 1947 he became the owner and operator of Buckland's Flowers in Plymouth until 1965. He then worked for Hawkensen Enterprises in Plymouth as a purchasing agent and operations supervisor until his retirement in 1980. He served the town of Plymouth as a selectman for five years during the 1980s. He was a charter member of the Plymouth Lions Club and a charter member of the Plymouth Lodge of Elks. He was also a past member of the Masonic Lodges, Order of Eastern Star, and the Plymouth Odd Fellows Lodge. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Alida (White) Buckland, of Holderness; two sons, Robert Buckland of Englewood, Florida, and James Buckland of Holderness; one daughter, Mary Ellen MacLeod, of Thornton, New Hampshire; seven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one brother, Forest Buckland, of Newport; one sister, Elizabeth Beaupre, of Newport; and nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held in the United Methodist Church of Plymouth August 7. The Reverend Marilyn R. Ayer, pastor, officiated. Burial will be held in the Riverside Cemetery icon in Plymouth. The Mayhew Funeral Home of Plymouth is in charge of arrangements.

Harris Francis Dunn
Harris Francis Dunn, 71, of Holland died icon in Burlington on Sunday, August 7, 2005, with his friends and family by his side. Mr. Dunn was born icon in Colchester on September 22, 1933, a son of Harold and Doris (Sullivan) Dunn. He served in the U.S. Army military police and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a car salesman for 40 years, working for many different companies. He loved cars and collected model cars. He married icon Ramona Urie, who predeceased him. He is survived by his children: Rebecca (Dunn) Bonnett and her husband, Edward, of Island Pond, Gary Dunn of Newport, Tim Dunn of Holland, Richard Melvina, and Michael Melvina; by his stepson Eric Snay of Newport; by his grandson Christopher Edward Bonnet of Island Pond; and by his brother Randolph Dunn of Derby. He was predeceased by his cousin Vincent Dore. Funeral services were held August 10 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery icon in Island Pond with full military honors. Laurance 'Bus' Laythe
Laurance 'Bus' Laythe, 93, of Newport, formerly of Derby Line, died icon in Newport on Monday, August 1, 2005. Mr. Laythe was born icon in Derby Line on April 1, 1912, a son of Laurance H. and Mildred (Cullins) Laythe. He worked at Union Butterfields in Derby Line as a draftsman. He was a member of the Derby Line Cemetery icon Association and enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, gardening, and family genealogy. On September 14, 1939, he married icon Christine Blodgett, who predeceased him. He is survived by his daughters Janet Aviano and her husband, Bob, of Rochester and Jacqueline Wood of Raymond, New Hampshire; by his grandchildren: Robert Aviano, James Aviano, Rick Wood, Tracy Abbott, Kevin Wood, and Kelly Wood; by four great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Chester Laythe; and by his sister Frances Lord. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Barbara Perron Kinsley
Barbara Perron Kinsley, 77, of West Glover died icon in Newport on Monday, August 1, 2005. Mrs. Kinsley was born icon in West Glover on the King farm on June 25, 1928, a daughter of Walter and Doris (Witcher) King. She was a graduate from Barton Academy. After graduating from high school she taught one year at the Beech School during the Depression. She then worked for Dr. Sam Hamilton as a dental assistant. She worked at the Barton bank as a teller, farmed for many years, and worked for Currier's Market until she retired in 1993. She was a member of the Maple Leaf Christmas Club, the West Glover Willing Workers, and the West Glover Congregational Church. She enjoyed playing cards with her sisters, swimming, gardening, sports, basketball games, knitting, and embroidery. She is survived by her children: Judy Conley and her husband, Doug, of Glover, Doris Perron of Gainsville, Florida, Bruce Perron and his wife, Laurie, of Albany, and Marilyn Prue and her husband, Duane, of Barton; by her stepsons: Brian Kinsley and his wife, Martha, of Orleans, Brent Kinsley and his wife, Rona, of Irasburg, and Bennett Kinsley and his wife, Lynda, of Westmore; by her brothers Fredrick King and his wife, Catherine, of New Hampshire and Donald King and his wife, Harriet, of West Glover; by her sisters Carolyn Perron of Glover and Sherry Muller of Sheffield; by her grandchildren: Claudette Conley, Luke and Danielle Conley, Connie Brigham, Edward and Margaret McQuatters, Megan McQuatters, and Lindsey and Kaitlyn Perron; by her stepgrandchildren: Shannon and Bill Bonsignore, Shane and Liz Kinsley, Sara, Dan, and Brendon Kinsley, and Ian and Miles Blanco; by her great-grandchildren: Sarah and Emily McQuatters and Sage Conley; by her stepgreat-grandchildren Victoria Bosignore and Eliza Kinsley; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Armand Perron, on March 15, 1990; by her second husband, Sumner Kinsley, on September 26, 1998; by her grandson Joel Perron on December 5, 2002; and by her sister Janice Butler in June 2001. Funeral services were held August 4 at the West Glover Congregational Church with the Reverend Rona Kinsley officiating.
