James "Jim" Douglas Francis, a self-employed welder who worked installing sprinkler systems, born Feb. 6, 1946, in Sawyerville, Ky. and moved to La Center six months ago from Santa Fe Springs, Calif.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed photography, riding horses, fishing, camping and traveling to Mexico.
Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Gray of La Center; one sister, Ruthetta Mohnike of Kentucky; one brother, Lonnie Francis of Florida; his step-father, Charles Downing of Kentucky; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View died July 16.

Thomas R. Lynch
Charlotte, N.C.
Former Vancouver resident Thomas Richard Lynch, 27, born June 30, 1973, in Waterville, Maine.
He graduated from Fort Vancouver High School in 1992.
A memorial service was Saturday at Central Church of God in Charlotte, where he was a member.
An Army veteran, Mr. Lynch was a sales representative in Charlotte for the past four years.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Mary and Horace Aldinger of Dallas, Texas; his father and stepmother, Ray and Dawn Lynch of Woodstock, Ga.; his stepfather, Edward Ouellette of Corinth, Texas; a brother, Lance Ouellette of Charlotte; a sister, Samantha Lynch of Woodstock, Ga.; and grandparents, Elwood and Vivian Libby of Yuma, Ariz., and Lucy Ouellette of Winslow, Maine.
Nellie B. McCullough

Former Clark County resident Nellie Blanche McCullough, born Sept. 20, 1916, in Freeport, Kan. She lived in Vancouver from 1965 until about eight months ago when she moved to Arizona. Her maiden name was Crouse.
Her husband, Harold A., Cemetery. There will be a memorial service from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at Barberton Grange, followed by a potluck.
Kenneth L. Smith
Woodland
Kenneth Lee Smith, a log truck driver for 25 years, born Sept. 22, 1941, in Woodland.
Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing, digging clams and being with his friends.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Marlene, at home; his mother, Marie Cooper of Vancouver; his father, Rowland Smith of Troutdale, Ore.; one son, Dirk Jones of Kelso; two brothers, Robert of Forest Grove, Ore., and Richard of Reno, Nev.; one sister, Susan Lanier of Fairview, Ore.; and five grandchildren.
Elmer L. Gray
Vancouver
Elmer L. Gray, 82, born March 17, 1918, in Broken Arrow, Okla.
Mr. Gray was in his teens when he became a pastor in Oklahoma. He earned a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and master's and doctorate degrees in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Mr. Gray served as a pastor of three churches in California before becoming a professor of religious education and extension at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He managed the Sunday School department at national headquarters in Nashville, Tenn., and then returned to Golden Gate Baptist Seminary as academic dean and professor. Mr. Gray was editor of the California Southwestern Baptist State Paper in Fresno before he retired to write books and countless magazine articles.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Martha, at home; two sons, Jim of Camas and Paul of Novato, Calif.; a foster daughter, Reba Wilkes of Fresno; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will begin at 2 this afternoon at Northside Baptist Church, with burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in Vancouver. She was 83.
Mrs. Platt was died July 24, 2000.
Survivors include three sons, William of Vancouver, Bruce of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Fred of Eugene, Ore.; one sister, Ilene Barnett of Carmichael, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will begin at noon today at East Vancouver United Methodist Church. Vancouver Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

There will be a private family service for Virginia C. Bembenek, who born Aug. 20, 1924, in Milwaukee, Wis., and lived in Vancouver the past seven years. She enjoyed sewing, artwork and crafts.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Joseph, at home; and three daughters, Melanie Carr and Laurie Bembenek, both of Vancouver; and Colette Bembenek of Oak Creek, Wis.
Davies Cremation and Burial Services is in charge of arrangements.
Iola E. Carter
Battle Ground
Iola Eileen Carter born June 21, 1915, in Bishop Hill, Ill., and lived in Clark County the past 49 years. Her maiden name was Ericson.
She was a secretary and bookkeeper for Cenex in Battle Ground.
Mrs. Carter was a member of Cherry Grove Friends Church, Rebekah Lodge, Rock Creek Grange 844, a women's study group and a garden club. She enjoyed playing keyboard, watching baseball and playing cards.
Her husband, Joseph H., Cemetery. Layne's Funeral Home in Battle Ground is in charge of arrangements.
Jonathan M. Davern
Seattle
Former Vancouver resident Jonathan Michael Davern, 23, born April 3, 1977, in Portland and lived most of his life in Vancouver. He moved to Seattle about one month ago.
Mr. Davern graduated from Prairie High School in 1995. He attended Clark College in Vancouver, Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Arizona and Seattle Central Community College. He was a writer, outdoorsman and traveler.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah, at home; his parents Terri and Brian Davern of Vancouver; two sisters, Annie Davern of Vancouver and Emily Davern of Seattle; and his grandmothers, Mary L. Bookey of Des Moines, Wash., and Vennetta Davern of Seattle.

R. David Edwards

A funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church for R. David Edwards, who born Jan. 13, 1946, in Vancouver.
Survivors include his wife, Elinor, at home; three daughters, Charlea of Vancouver, Cindy Keltner of Portland and Suzy Griffee of Battle Ground; two sons, Scott and Ted, both of Vancouver; three brothers, Bob Edwards, Dick Edwards and Don Nelson, all of Vancouver; and seven grandchildren.
The casket will be open from noon to 7 p.m. today and Friday at Evergreen Staples Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Park Hill died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in Battle Ground. She was 92.
Her husband, Roy, born May 17, 1908, in Bancroft, S.D., and lived in Clark County the past 50 years. Her maiden name was Baker.
Mrs. Erwin was a mail carrier at the Yacolt Post Office.
Survivors include three sisters, Gertrude Jackson of Pierre, S.D., Verna Culver of Lathrop, Mo., and Ruth Berry of Battle Ground; six brothers, Crayton Baker of Centralia, Darrold Baker of Amboy, Floyd Baker of Rapid City, S.D., Winfield Baker of Pierre, Wayne Baker of Porcupine, S.D., and Donald Baker of Chadron, Neb.; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and traveling, especially to Reno.
