Phyllis M. Whitcomb

Phyllis M. Whitcomb, who owned Bill's Trading Post in Priest River, Idaho, with her husband for 22 years, died in 1968.
A graveside service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pines born Feb. 28, 1923, in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.
Survivors include three daughters, Jeanna LaValley of Gresham, Nancy Anderson of Foster City, Calif., and Linda Balderrama of Portland; one brother, James E. Chappell of San Jose, Calif.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Erskine B. Wood
Vancouver
Erskine Biddle Wood, who had been very active in public service, born June 21, 1911, in Portland. He lived most of life on the banks of the Columbia River, where his grandfather, Henry J. Biddle, had established a family home two generations before. He lived the past 35 years in Vancouver.
Mr. Wood attended a private college preparatory school in California and graduated from Harvard University in 1933. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1936 and returned to Portland to practice law.
In 1942 he joined the Navy and went to Washington, D.C., to work with the War Shipping Administration. After the war he was stationed in San Francisco before returning to Portland and his law practice.
Mr. Wood specialized in admiralty law, primarily representing foreign shipping companies and argued three cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
He was on the board of directors at OMSI, on the board of trustees for Catlin Gable School and a member of the Oregon State Bar. He was also a member of the Arlington Club, the University Club, the Flyfisher's Club of Oregon and the Multnomah Club.
An avid fly fisherman, he most loved fishing on the Deschutes and Metolius rivers in Oregon, where he owned property.
In 1985, he and his children donated a large tract of river meadow along the Metolius River to the Nature Conservancy.
Mr. Wood and family members donated land along the Evergreen Highway to the city of Vancouver as a park to honor his grandfather.
Survivors include three daughters, Mardi Wood of Bolinas, Calif., Rebecca Biddle Wood Hardesty of Boise, Idaho, Mary C. Wood Fox of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Spencer Hoffman Wood of Boise and Erskine Wood III of Eugene; one sister, Rebecca Wood Watkin of San Francisco; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday at his home on the Columbia River.

Clayton O. Buell
Vancouver
A retired long haul truck driver, Clayton Otis Buell, born June 8, 1927, in Hermiston, Ore. He had lived in Portland for 54 years and in Vancouver for two years.
He served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946. Mr. Buell drove trucks for Howard R. Williams Consolidated Freightways, now known as Matlack Trucking, since 1949.
Survivors include his wife since 1945, Jean, at home; three sons, Clint, Michael and Harold; two brothers, Harold D. and Alfred J.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Wilhelm Funeral Home in Portland. Disposition will be by cremation.

Richard J. Deegan Sr.
Vancouver
A veteran of the United States Army, Richard James "RJ" Deegan Sr. born July 27, 1928, in Chicago. He was raised and educated in Elgin, Ill., where he later worked as a maintenance engineer at a state hospital and owned and operated Deegans Moving Company.
In 1950 he enlisted in the army and served in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1952.
He also had lived in Phoenix, Bremerton, Wash., and Cinebar, Wash. Mr. Deegan had lived in Vancouver for six months before his death by his wife since 1953, Gloria, in 1993; his son Richard; and two brothers, Harold and Robert.
Survivors include two daughters, Wendy Haag of Oklahoma City and JoAnn Proper of Vancouver; three sons, Brian, Randall and Danny, all of Vancouver; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The casket will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Sticklin Funeral Chapel in Centralia.

Leslie T. Enge
Camas
Leslie "Les" T. Enge, who retired from James River International after 37 years, born April 20, 1925, in Portland.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Regina L., at home; two sons, Leslie "Skip" H. of Vancouver and Rickie "Rick" C. of Camas; a foster daughter, Candy Moore of Idaho; two foster sons, Phil Morrow of Vancouver and Randy Elam of Reno, Nev.; three grandchildren; an exchange student granddaughter; eight foster grandchildren; and 15 foster great-grandchildren.
A foster son, Harvey C. Harris, preceded him in died Monday, May 14, 2001, in Portland of natural causes. He was 65.
Mr. Lee was died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland of cardiomyopathy and amyloid. She was 35.
She was died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, in Milwaukie, Ore., from a stroke. She was 85.
Mrs. Steiner was death by her husband since 1930, Lawrence, in 1958.
Survivors include two daughters, Maryldean Merwin of Woodland and Sharon Cota of Portland; three sons, Bishop Kenneth of Milwaukie, William of Portland and Robert of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, Mary Lou Smith of Eugene, Ore., and Jodie Bogren of Portland; a brother, Arthur G. Pieters of Anacortes, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
The casket will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Zeller Chapel of the Roses in Portland. Rosary will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with a viewing before and after the rosary at the church. A Funeral Mass will start at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Portland, with burial following at noon at Gethsemani died Sunday, May 20, 2001, in Washougal. She was 77.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
She was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Roberts County, S.D.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Elroy, at home; one daughter, Charlotte Hevron of Camas; two sons, Eugene of Camas and Keith of Washougal; four sisters, Betty Sommerfeld of Montevideo, Minn., Belvia Steiner and Barbara Janisch, both of Eden, S.D., and Bernita Jennen of Sisseton, S.D.; one brother, Franz Fonder of White Wood, S.D.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brown's Funeral Home in Camas.
