Lester W. Soll, a custodian for the Vancouver School District who retired in 1984, born July 8, 1922, in Manning, Iowa, and had lived in Clark County since 1963.
He enjoyed gardening and loved animals.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary M., at home; two sons, Bob and Clark, both of Vancouver; and two brothers, Ernest of Vancouver and Roy of Manning.
There will be no service. Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth A. Hayslip

Former Vancouver resident Ruth Agnes Hayslip born April 25, 1937, in Beach, N.D. She moved to Vancouver in the early 1940s and moved many times until returning to New Mexico when she became quite ill. Her maiden name was Hale.
Her husband, Gene, Cemetery in Vancouver.

Jean Hood
Vancouver
A celebration-of-life service will begin at 1 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church for Jean Hood, 86, who born Aug. 1, 1916, in Seattle and lived in Vancouver for 65 years. Her maiden name was Cheyne.
She graduated from Eastern Washington College, where she was on the basketball team. She started teaching in Vancouver at the old Columbian School on Kauffman Avenue. She also worked as a home economist for Northwestern Electric Co. in Vancouver. After raising her sons, she returned to college at the University of Portland and got her master's degree and taught at Minnehaha School until she retired.
Mrs. Hood was a 59-year member of First Presbyterian Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher and session member. She had been president of the Ladies Board at Royal Oaks Country Club and the Covington Club. Mrs. Hood was a member of Southwest Washington Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer at the Clark County Historical Museum.
She was given an honorary life membership in Washington Congress of Parents and Teachers for her volunteer work at Lincoln School. The Jean Hood Award is given each year at Minnehaha School for student achievement.
Mrs. Hood loved traveling and playing bridge.
Her husband, Ken, Cemetery. Evergreen Staples Funeral Chapel is in charge of final arrangements.

Ira R. Pritchett
Battle Ground
Lifetime Clark County resident Ira Russell Pritchett born Aug. 18, 1941, in Vancouver.
He graduated from Hudson's Bay High School in 1959 and then began working for Consolidated Freightways in Portland. He retired after 35 years with the company.
Mr. Pritchett enjoyed spending time tinkering with four-wheel drive vehicles and Jeeps. He liked hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors include his mother, Marjorie Pritchett of Vancouver; one brother, Ivan of Vancouver; one sister, Carolyn Minor of Vancouver; and his special companion, Louise Posh, at home.
Anderson's Tribute Center in Hood River, Ore., was in charge of arrangements.
Ann L. Starkey
Vancouver
Ann Lowry Starkey, who owned Ann's Beauty Shop for more than 50 years, born Aug. 18, 1912, in Anadarko, Okla., and lived in Vancouver the past 77 years. Her maiden name was Lowry.
Survivors include one son, Hugh B. of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Starkey attended St. James Catholic Church and loved playing cards, reading and antiques.
A memorial Mass will begin at 12:10 p.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church. Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Charles W. Tobin

Charles W. Tobin, a retired longshoreman, born Aug. 22, 1912, in Tacoma and lived in Clark County for 50 years.

Melvin L. Borg

A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Gardens died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in Vancouver. He was 89.
Cemetery for Donna R. Hochhalter, 70, who born Sept. 29, 1932, in Johnstown, Neb., and moved to Battle Ground in 1991.
A homemaker, she was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and enjoyed sewing, cooking, poetry and writing stories.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence G., at home; two sons, Mark of Ridgefield and Kirk of Battle Ground; two sisters, Leona Dacus of Austin, Colo., and Pat Linsenman of Commerce, Colo.; two brothers, Bill Conklin of Johnstown, Colo., and Chuck Conklin of Denver; and five grandchildren.
Following the graveside service, a memorial service will be at 3 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Maurice E. Kelley

A retired Teamster and charter member of the Clark County Saddle Club, Maurice "Maury" E. Kelley, 83, born Dec. 1, 1919, in St. Helens, Ore., and lived in the Battle Ground area for 73 years.
He served in the Army during World War II, spending time in the South Pacific and Japan with the 41st Infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
He was a member of Battle Ground Community United Methodist Church, Tum Tum American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Mid-County Kiwanis, Battle Ground Elks and the Vancouver Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Erma M., at home; one daughter, Rebecca Kelley of Seattle; two sons, Richard of Amboy and Roger of Samish Island; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Battle Ground Community United Methodist Church.

Former Vancouver resident Vernice M. Mayer born Nov. 27, 1906, in Marion County, Iowa.
She was a member of the Lexington Evangelical Free Church in Longview, and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, writing letters, cooking and reading the Bible.
Her husband, Herman, funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel. Private burial will follow.
