Chester A. Brown, 86, born Sept. 9, 1917, in Sturgis, S.D. He moved to Vancouver 15 years ago from Los Angeles County, Calif.
He worked as a corrections officer in Los Angeles, was involved in many civic and political activities, including serving as the first mayor of Lawndale, Calif., in 1959, and as president of the Centinela Valley Union High School District.
While living in Vancouver, he attended St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed sports of all kinds.
He was preceded in Cemetery. Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
LaRena V. Butler
Washougal
LaRena Viola Butler, who had lived in Washougal since 1972, death by her husband, John Sr., in 1983, a son, John Jr., in 1965, and son, Jim, in 1987.
Mrs. Butler was died Thursday, May 27, 2004, in Vancouver.
died in June 2000.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Long of Moorcroft, Wyo., Sally Speelman of Washougal, and Linda Richards of Gillette, Wyo.; two sons, Paul of Anderson Island, Wash., and Charles of Las Vegas; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Brown's Funeral Home in Camas.

Dean Gipe

A retired millworker and former owner and operator of Parkrose Auto Parts, Dean Gipe, 84, born Oct. 19, 1919, in Woodward, Kan., and had lived in Vancouver since 1992.
He served in the Army for two years during World War II and was a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4248. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie, at home; two sons, Leslie of Yacolt and Darrell of Anchorage, Alaska; two step daughters, Trudy Lanning of Vancouver and Claudia Butler of Brownsville, Ore.; two sisters, Esther Lawson of Sylvan Grove, Kan., and Winifred Gipe of Phillipsburg, Kan.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Scott Funeral Home, 4205 S.E. 59th Ave., Portland. Burial will be private in Willamette National died of complications of diabetes May 16, 2004, at a Kirkland hospital. She was 73.
While living in Vancouver, Mrs. Hoffman was a past president of the Friendship Club at Smith's Tower and a foster grandparent with the Head Start program.

Peter M. Valiton

Peter M. Valiton, 86, born Sept. 26, 1917, in Pullman, Wash. He served in the armed forces as a radio repairman from 1943 until 1946, and then worked for Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell telephone companies.
Survivors include his twin brother, Jim of Alabama; and special companion, Maria C. Herod of Vancouver.
A service will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Willamette National died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in Vancouver.
Mr. Weihl was died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in Vancouver. He was 83.
Mr. Banks was died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at home. She was 88.
Mrs. Janzik was death by her husband, Joseph, in 1991; and son, Robert, in 1989.
Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Fitzwilson of Vancouver and Donna McCormick of Colville, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Janzik was a member of the Toltec Book Club and the Methodist Misfits Club, both in Aberdeen. She enjoyed gardening and reading.
A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fern Hill died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in Vancouver. She was 64.
Mrs. Powers was died in 1980.
Survivors include one son, Brett Joerg of Beaverton, Ore.; her mother, Thursile Dahl of Portland; one sister, Dixie L. Clark of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and one grandchild.
She was a senior program analyst for the Bureau of Land Management before retiring in 2000. Mrs. Powers enjoyed reading, shopping, arts and the beach.
