Was born September 12, 1952 to Cornellia Jane Howie and Arthur H. Howie in Columbus, Ohio. Lester was the third child of eight children. He joined United States Army and served in Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge and Purple Heart. He made Seattle, WA. his home. Here, he met his wife Rachelle Denise. He attended Highline Community College, received a Paralegal Associate of Arts on December 11, 1992. He also received a Bachelor of Arts from Central Washington University on June 19, 1995. He was employed by the United States Postal Service where he worked until his illness. Lester Eugene Howie departed this life Sunday, November 18, 2001. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Rachelle Denise Howie; four children: Lester Eugene Howie, Jr. 18, Vanessa Faye Howie 16, Yvette Denise Howie 14, and Miles Emmanuel Howie 12; his mother, Cornellia Jane Monillas; three sisters: Karen Howie, Latilla Donaldson, LeTenna Catten; four brothers: Arthur F. Howie, Sr., Paul F. Howie, John W. Howie, Morris W. Catten, all of Seattle, WA.; four aunts: Constance Jones, Dorothy Johnson, Thelma Winslow and Evelyn Mills, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Peacefully passed away at his home in Edmonds on Wednesday, November 21. He leaves his loving wife of 39 years, Linda Kay Jackson; their children, Angela Jackson-Selle (Mark), Thom Jackson (Maria), Michael Jackson (Jessica), Aimy Jackson-Chappell (Isaac); and eleven grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Emma Jackson of Jamestown, N.D., sister Mary Carey of Cape Coral, FL. Born August 14, 1945 in Jamestown, N.D., he moved to Washington State in 1965. He worked for Bartell Drugs for thirty-six years. John was an athlete all of his life; a college football player, championship softball player and creative golfer. As an adult, he was an active member of the Edmonds youth community, coaching his children's teams and positively influencing many young people over the years. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held 7 p.m., Monday, November 26 at Beck's Funeral Home, Edmonds, (425) 771-1234. After graduation he served in the US Air Force. He was a member of Ironworkers Local #86. James Truman JOHNSON
James Truman JOHNSON, 77, died November 20, 2001. He was born on January 13, 1924 in Brainerd, Minnesota. He served in the Army for three years during WWII, spending part of that time in North Africa. He graduated from the University of Washington Law School in 1950 and practiced law in Seattle from 1953 until 1998, specializing in transportation law. He was a longtime member of the Seattle First Baptist Church, Washington State Bar Association, Washington Athletic Club and Overlake Golf Club. He is survived by Jean, his wife of 54 years, sons Nick, of Stanwood, and Gregg, of Bellevue, and daughter Jan, of Stan wood, and five grandchildren, Erin, Karlynn, Lisa and Hannah and grandson, Noah. A Grave side Service for the family will be held on Tues day, November 27, 2001. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Ernestine Marie KALKSTINE, 85, died November 15, 2001 in Burien, WA. She was born in Chicago, IL. on October 14, 1916, moved to Muskegon and Whitehall, MI., moved to Seattle in 1951, then moved to Normandy Park in 1952. Retired from Seattle Trust and Savings Bank. Favorite pastimes included bingo, playing pinochle, and traveling with friends. She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years Warren F. Kalkstine, son Charles E. Kalkstine of Kent, daughter Audrey L. Kalkstine of Seattle, daughter-in-law Audrey P. Kalkstine, grandchildren Warren A. and Joyce M. granddaughter-in-law Julie, great-grandchildren Matthew, Laura, Mikel, and Jon. At her request there will be no formal services or flowers. passed away November 20, 2001 in Seattle, after a year-long struggle of congestive heart failure. He was born December 1, 1914 in Vancouver, B.C. His family moved to Seattle when he was 4 years old. He graduated from Broadway High School. He worked for Pacific Northwest Bell and retired after 32 years of service and made many wonderful friendships from the company. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, Birch Bay, gardening, his truck, good food and family get-togethers. He is survived by his loving wife Virginia of 57 years of marriage; daughter, Judy Lehman; son, Richard Kent and his wife Dianne; grandchildren, Trenton, Troy, and Mark Lehman, Shawnee and Ryan Kent, Tana Goggleye, Uncle Jim and Aunt Marcia DeMont of Medford, OR. and numerous friends. Bettina Roberts KETTENRING
Bettina Roberts Kettenring was born in Port land, Oregon, on April 19, 1913. She passed away in her home at Horizon House in Seattle, Washington, on November 17, 2001, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Fredric M. Kettenring. Bettina (or Betty as she was known by many of her lifelong friends) was a graduate of the University of Washington where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Library Science and was a member of Alpha Phi sorority. An active member of her community, she was associated for many years with the Seattle Milk Fund, Ply mouth Congregational Church, the Big Board Investment Club, and the Women's University Club. She was an avid reader, bridge player and gardener and enjoyed traveling and playing golf with her husband Fred during their retire ment years. She shared her husband's love of the ocean and their second home in Ocean Park, Washington. A devoted wife and mother, Bettina raised three children, Jon, Ann, and Robin - and was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren. Members of her immediate family include Jon and Pat Kettenring, Summit, New Jersey; Ann and Jim Young, Bellevue, Washington; and Robin and Lee Pasquarella, Seattle, Washington. Her grandchildren include Brian Kettenring, Sacramento, California; Karin Kettenring, St. Paul, Minnesota; Diane Young, Kirkland, Washington; Michael Young, Newark, New Jersey; Peter Young, Portland, Oregon; and Jennifer and Jill Pasquarella, New York City, New York. Was born on September 16, 1985 in Los Angeles, CA, and died in Manhattan Beach, CA, on November 16, 2001. He was a sophomore at Mira Costa High School where he excelled in both sports and scholastics. He was an enthusiastic snow boarder and skate boarder and enjoyed water polo, baseball and soccer throughout his life. He maintained straight A's while taking accelerated and honor classes and had already passed his high school exit exam. Ryan grew up in both the Seattle and Manhattan Beach areas. He was a loving son, grandson, great grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Erin Michelle KLOTZ
Kennewick, Washington Erin Michelle Klotz died November 18, 2001 when the vehicle in which she was a passenger was hit head-on by a drunk driver going the wrong way on the freeway. She was born January 8, 1981 to Duane and Nan cy Klotz in Olympia, WA. She lived with her family in Kennewick, WA, and graduated in 1999 from Kamiakin High School. Erin was a junior attending Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA, majoring in music. She was also in Junior standing in the Douglas Honor College in Ellensburg. Erin was a vibrant young woman with a passion for music who lived the philosophy that life is a limitless opportunity to learn, grow, accept and overcome challenges and turn them into opportunities. She loved the outdoors and was an avid rock-climber, backpacker, hiker, bicycler, and runner. Her artistic talents were expressed in her writings, the cards and gifts that she created for others, and of course, in her music. She was always singing, from the time she was very young. She was an accomplished and talented flutist and also played piano and tenor saxophone. Erin was a self-disciplined role model and goal- oriented leader for others. She was a Head Instructor for the United Spirit Association, where she taught high school students to be drum majors at summer camps. She was an optimistic student of life and sought out wise and talented mentors. She believed in being of service to others and was involved in Circle K and other volunteer organizations. Erin touched many lives in her 20 years. Erin believed in the strength of the love of family and friends, and has many friends across the nation.
