Howard "Mac" McMahon RUDDELL

Died November 17, 2001 of a heart attack at age 55, in Seattle. He and his wife Sandy had just attended the 2001 Apple Cup Game between the University of Washington and Washington State University. Born in Seattle on July 19, 1946 to Howard B. and Frances Ruddell, Mac lived an accomplished, grace-filled life. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother, as well as a business peer, visionary, and a best friend to so many people. Mac attended Queen of Angels School in Port Angeles, and was an altar boy at the church for eight years. He graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1964, where he was a member of the varsity track and basketball teams and served as student body president his senior year. He went on to attend the University of Washington. There he continued his high jumping and majored in business administration. In 1969, Mac also attended the General Motors Dealer's Son School in Detroit, Michigan. At age 11, Mac started sweeping the lot at his father's car dealership, where he quickly progressed to washing the used the cars. He started selling cars in the summers during college, and eventually worked his way into management after college. Mac started dating Sandy Alwine his senior year in high school, and they continued dating through their years at the University of Washington. They were married on June 15, 1968 in Port Angeles. After they were married , Mac continued working at this father's dealership while Sandy taught school. In 1976, Mac opened his own used car dealership, Ruddell Lease-Sales, Inc. in Port Angeles. In 1981, he and Sandy returned to the new car business when they purchased the Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac, GMC and Mazda franchises. A few years later, they built a new facility and the business was renamed Ruddell Auto Mall. Mac's vision was to provide a home that people could come to for all their automotive needs, to share his enjoyment of the history of the automobile through the displays of classic cars and auto memorabilia, and to foster a family of employees that could share in the joy of success. In his professional career, Mac was respected for his work at the local, state and national levels of the automotive industry. At the time of his death, he was the President-elect of the Washington State Auto Dealers' Association, a leadership role among his peers that he was looking forward to. In 1983, he was honored as the NIADA National Quality Dealer. During the administration of Jimmy Carter, he was invited by the President to attend the White House Council on Small Businesses. His financial expertise led to his current position as Chairman-of-the-Board of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Port Angeles. Outside his public life, Mac had a creativity that was expressed in so many ways. Aside from the endless collection of jokes and quick wit that he shared with so many, he was a talented musician and artist. He loved to spend evenings playing jazz on the piano, and enjoyed reminiscing about a garage band he was part of back in high school. Out-of-doors, he was a hands-on, do-it-yourself person who spent time creating fountains, rockeries, fences and decorative wrought iron. In art, he was most at home using his welding tools and his airbrush. He began making metal sculptures as a kid and blended in his own trademark sense of humor over the years. Recipients of his sculptures treasured them because they were so personalized. He also combined his art with his love of the automobile, and had a passion for mechanics and model building. Perhaps Mac's most endearing trait was his love and caring for his family and for others. He loved to spend time with his family, whether it was going fishing, working on projects in his garage or just spending an evening catching up over dinner. His contributions to the community and people that he cherished so much are well known. Mac was especially concerned about young people and those in need. He felt that everyone deserved a chance in life; he tried to make that dream a reality whenever he could. He was excited to be a part of new projects and creative fundraising in the community. Mac was a charter member and past president of the Nor'wester Rotary and enjoyed the club's involvements with the downtown Port Angeles mural project, food bank drives and work on the Valley Creek Estuary Project. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and enjoyed being a host father to exchange students from Germany, Norway and Brazil. Mac was a supporter of the YMCA and chaired the original campaign to build the new Clallam County YMCA facility. He had received the National YMCA Distinguished Service Award for his many years of service. He is survived by his wife Sandy, parents Howard B. and Frances Ruddell, sons Howard, Thomas, David and daughter Kathleen, daughters-in-law Amy and Tammy, all of Port Angeles; brothers Robert and William of Seattle, Michael of Sausalito, California, John of Los Angeles, California, and sisters Connie Lipsker of Spokane and Christine Maricich of Mount Vernon. Services will be held on Saturday, November 24, at 11 a.m. at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Port Angeles. A reception will follow. In memory of Mac, donations can be made to the Howard "Mac" Ruddell Community Trust, which will provide scholarships and other charitable help to the community, or contributions can be made to the charity of your choice. Donations to the trust can be will be accepted at First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Port Angeles, P.O. Box 351, Port Angeles, WA 98362 or any branch.
