Arthur Sheridan LANGLIE
Born June 28, 1930 Seattle Died May 24, 2002
Seattle Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Arthur Langlie enjoyed many adventures and touched many lives in his 71 years. Langlie died suddenly of a stroke May 24. Langlie spent his childhood in Seattle, on the beach of Indianola (Kitsap County), and in Olympia where his father, Arthur B. Langlie served three terms as Governor. A student of history, Langlie witnessed and enjoyed recounting many of the events that shaped our state in the 1940's, 50's and 60's. He graduated from Lakeside School in Seattle in 1948, Princeton University A.B. Cum Laud 1952 and University of Washington Law School in 1958. Langlie began a nearly 30 year career with the Coast Guard in 1953, on active duty at Kodiak Island and in the North Pacific for two years. He retired from the Coast Guard reserves in 1980 with the rank of Captain. Years later he would fondly recall the beauty of the evening sky while standing watch at the helm. Following law school he clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals 9th Judicial Circuit and returned to Seattle to join the law firm of McMicken Rupp and Schweppe. In 1966 he established his own firm Langlie & Praeger. Arthur Langlie loved the law and believed in the personal side of the legal practice, handling the needs of each client--often doing legal work for little or no fee. He was a member of the Washington State Bar Association, the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States and in the 1960's served as Chairman of the Committee on Civil Rights for the Seattle-King County Bar Association. Arthur Langlie believed strongly in public service and he lived his life helping others. For more than 40 years he served on the Seattle Advisory Board. He also served on the Salvation Army National Advisory Board. He served on the boards of Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska, the Coast Guard Academy Foundation, and as President of the Board of Lakeside School and of the Indianola Beach Improvement Club. He served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School at University Presbyterian Church. He was active in Republican politics serving as District Chairman for the King County Republican party. He became a private pilot in his 40's and enjoyed flying floatplanes around Puget Sound. Langlie's most cherished times were with his family at their summer home at Indianola or vacation spot in the Methow Valley. Arthur and Jane LeCocq Langlie would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary next year. The couple have three children Karin Langlie Glass (Ken), Emily Langlie (Steve Miletich) and Arthur K. Langlie (Stephanie), and six grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane, Daniel, Trevor, William, Arthur Francis, and Theodore. Langlie is also survived by his sister, Carrie Ellen Langlie Vasko. At the time of his death Arthur Langlie was working hard on the Salvation Army Hope Campaign to improve Salvation Army facilities in the Seattle area to combat hunger and homelessness, and to provide a safe environment for youth.
