Pat McHUGH
D. Patrick McHugh passed away at St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia, WA on Wednesday, May 22, 2002. Pat was born in Seattle, WA on May 4, 1923 to Patrick and Kathleen McHugh, one of 8 sons and 3 daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by five broth ers and three sisters. He is survived by his brothers, Fr. William McHugh, OMI, of Shady Cove, OR and Charles McHugh of Buckley, WA; by his wife of 47 years, Bernice; children Kathleen Grace McHugh Roney of Seattle and Timothy Patrick McHugh, of Bellingham, WA; and grandchildren, Liam, Bridgid, Eileen and Casey Patrick. Pat McHugh was a graduate of Holy Rosary School in West Seattle in 1937, Seattle Prep in 1941 and attended Seattle College before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps. Before and after the war he worked for Beth lehem Steel Company. In 1963 Pat went to work for the State of Washington Division of Purchasing and retired in 1989 as Manager of the State's Central Stores. He was praised, far and wide, for his managerial skills while his work was always charac terized by kindness, generosity and a great sense of humor. His presence touched the lives of everyone. Pat was a deeply religious man, an avid fisherman, a great story teller, a lover of his Irish ancestry and a most compas sionate and loving person. Though his physi cal health worsened in his latter years, he nev er once complained, always seeking to com fort those around him with words of hope and encouragement when perhaps it was he who needed them the most. The doors to his heart and home were always open to others in friendship. Pat was hospitalized at St. Peter's in Olympia on May 12, 2002. His quick wit and humor were a comfort to all who tried so heroically to save him in his last days and even when he was barely able to speak anymore, he still man aged to utter the words, "I'll be okay; please don't cry for me." Shortly after his passing one of his doctors said, "You never know a person's true character until he goes through something like this. Pat McHugh was a great man." His family and friends pray that God rest his beautiful and humble soul. They loved him and will always love him. He will be sore ly missed. There will be a Vigil Service and Rosary for Pat McHugh Tuesday, May 28th, at 7 p.m. and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednes day, May 29th, at 11 a.m., BOTH at St. Bene dict's Church on Forty-ninth and Wallingford in Seattle. to Mario D. Merlino on July 1, 1939, and together they raised two sons, Gary (Donna) and Don (Joan). She was a loving Grandmother to Gregg (Bridget), Dionne, Steven (Lianne), Michael and Bradley (Erika), and great grandmother to Brianna, Garrett, Ariel and Elise. Anne's passion was her family, and she will be missed by all who loved her. Born November 29th, 1919 in Hobart, WA and passed away peacefully at home May 20th, 2002 in Seattle, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Gertie; sisters Hildred, Helen, Betty and brothers Mickey and Ralph. Survived by cousin Deane Schmidt of Mansfield, WA, cousin Jody Greenaway of Malott, WA; niece Betty Elliott of Everett, WA and his longtime friend Michael Gee of Seattle, WA. Alice Mary MIRANTE
Age 89, passed away Sunday, May 26. She was born on October 11, 1912 in Spokane, Washington and was one of nine children. During much of her life she worked tirelessly and lovingly in the care of the developmentally disabled, most-recently as an employee of Fircrest School in Seattle. Alice was a gentle, sweet and caring person with a strong Catholic faith and was loved dearly by those who were blessed to know her. Survived by her sister Eileen, she was "Auntie Alice" to her many nieces, nephews and their children whom she made feel uniquely special and loved. Recitation of the Rosary will be Thursday, May 30th, at 8:30 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 9 a.m., BOTH at St. Catherine Church. Former prominent real estate broker and Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance agent, passed away Friday, May 17, 2002. Owned and operated an apple orchard for 13 years in the Wenatchee area, before his real estate endeavors. Married Marguerite Taylor in 1938, and they were both long life residents of the Wenatchee area. She preceded him in death in 1996. Survived by sons Vernon Neel Jr., Mark Neel and Dick Neel. Services Wednesday, May 22, 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church at Crawford & Miller Streets in Wenatchee, followed by a brief graveside service. Reception following at his former residence, 524 N. Dr. Dwight H. NEWELL
passed away May 22, 2002 in Roseville, CA., was the loving husband of the late Ruth E. Newell. Dwight is the brother of the late Theodore and Irving Newell. He is survived by his second second wife, Dorothy and his sister Marian Paeper. Dwight leaves behind his daughters Mary Anne Stergion, Margaret M. McCleary, Elizabeth Sulzmann, and their families. Dwight was a veteran serving his country in World War II. Dwight was involved in education for over forty years, including many years as the Dean of the School of Education at SFSU and the Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Dwight shall be greatly missed. Services entrusted to Cochrane's Chapel of the Roses, Roseville, CA. Memorial Service to be held in June at Haven of Rest cemetery, Gig Harbor, WA. passed away May 25, 2002 at the age of 91. Born in Scranton, PA. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Ervin E. Oades and is survived by daughter Linda M. Mikkalsen and husband John R., and grandchildren Stacy L. Mikkalsen, Lisa M. Mikkalsen-Jaskolka and husband Daniel F. She will be cremated. Of Shoreline, WA., passed away May 22, 2002 at Kindred Hospital in Seattle, WA. at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Virginia Pineda Oleta; his children, Ana Maria, Patricia, and Agerico; 10 grandchildren, Alan, Alvin, Arlene, Angelica, Nina, Chloe, Lauren, Jimmy, Danielle, Noah;and three great grandchildren, Nikki, Hailee, and Michaela. He was preceded in death by son, Danilo. Damaso graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology in the Philippines with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He came to the United States in 1970. He loved to garden, play golf, read, spend time with his family and most of all, his beloved wife, Virginia. He will always be remembered as a kind, gentle, and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Rosary Prayers will be Tuesday, May 28, 2002, 7 p.m. at Beck's Funeral Home, 405 5th Ave. S. Left us on May 15th, 2002 due to an auto accident... He leaves behind a loving mother and father, Marsha and Dale Ledeman, his adored son Jesse Orchard, brothers Chris, Tracy, Joe, a sister Lisa and their spouses & children and many friends as well as two half brothers and two half sisters he never got to meet. He will be laid to rest in Mount Tahoma National Veteran's cemetery and his memorial will be held on June 1st from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 18560 1st Ave. N.E., Shoreline, WA. in the Alumni room. Jean OVE
Beloved Mother and Grandmother, Jean was born in Seattle September 27, 1916 and passed away May 15, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold (Bingo). Jean was known for her intellectual curiosity, love of family and all things in the art world. She lived almost all her life in Seattle, graduating from Garfield High School and then graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the U.of W. She was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority which still meets annually. Her first teaching job was in Cle Elum and then she taught in Aberdeen for three years where she met fellow teacher Harold T. Ove - they were married
for 52 years. She went back to the U of W for her masters in art and taught again at Mount lake Terrace High School for 13 years. Jean's lifelong interest was in the arts - she was a remarkable printmaker, painter and ceramist. For many years she participated in the Bellevue Arts & Crafts Fair and displayed and sold her work all over the Northwest. She was a member of Women Painters of Washington, The Northwest Water Color Society and the Olympic Arts Association. Along with Harold, she traveled to Asia and Europe enjoying the different cultures and especially the museums. They also were life long enthusiasts of square dancing belonging to both the Schoramba Club and the Capicanas club. Jean loved to dance and Harold was an accomplished Caller. She is survived by three daughters, Jackie Hardin of Port Townsend, Kathy Beck of Bellevue and Valerie Roberts of Seattle along with eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two brothers, Bartley Dobb of Seattle and Herb Dobb of California, all of whom will miss her. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 2nd, 3:30 p.m. at the University Unitarian Church, 6556 35th Ave. N.E., Seattle. (Obit dated 05/26/2002.)
