Roy Chester SMITH
Roy Chester SMITH was born November 15, 1909 first into a family of eight children in Woodbury County, IA to Albert & Lura Smith. After graduating from Kelso High School in 1927, he attended Washington State University and later graduated from Seattle Pacific College with a Bachelor of Science Degree and a teaching certificate. In 1961 he earned a Master of Education in Science Curriculum. He taught Math and Science in the Highline School District for 25 years, retiring in 1975. As a young man he owned a welding shop in Enumclaw, WA. A mutual friend introduced him to Myrtle Olson-Cope and they were married
within four months. During WWII they moved to Bremerton, WA where he became a welder on the battleships in the Naval Shipyard. While there Mark, Durwood and Renee were born. The family moved to Seattle in 1946. Following the death of Myrtle in 1987, Roy married
Myra Smestad who also preceded him in death. He was an active member and officer of the Bible Science Foundation. In addition Roy served with the Gideons for many years and faithfully The Church by the Side of the Road serving as an elder. He passed on to meet his Lord, May 21, 2002. Private interment. A memorial "celebration of life" will be held Friday May 31, 2002 at the Church by the Side of the Road, Tukwila, WA at 11am. Remembrances to Gideons or Creation Association of Puget Sound. Edmund "Ed" Lawrence SOFTLI
Edmund "Ed" Lawrence SOFTLI, 63, died on May 26, 2002, as the result of heart failure following emergency surgery. Ed was the fifth of eleven children born to Rodolfo and Isi Softli, who preceded him in death. Two brothers also preceded him; Victor, a younger, brother in November of 1956 and Robert, and older brother, in May of 2001. Ed was born in New York City and raised on Long Island, New York. The family moved to Seattle in 1954 after living two years in the Sacramento area. Ed attended West Seattle High School for 6 months. In his sophomore year he transferred to Franklin High School where he built an outstanding athletic career in football, basketball and track. Ed received multiple honors from his teammates for his inspirational leadership and athletic ability. He was selected to the All City Team in each sport. Ed was a Boeing employee for close to 11 years. He participated in the Boeing basketball and flag football leagues. He began a 27-year playing career shortly after high school with the Seattle Cavalier Amateur Football Team, 1957 to 1984. Ed played softball and soccer during off seasons to keep in shape. Ed was later employed with the Canteen Vending Machine Company and many people knew him as "The Candy Man". He retired in 1995. Ed will be remembered for his love of life and people, his generous heart, and his infectious smile. "Eddie" as he was called by his brothers and sisters, never let a friend down. Ed is survived by daughters Erin and Husband Joe Yung of Kentucky, Maureen and Husband Tom Heffernan of Seattle; Gina and husband Rick Singleton of Federal Way; his twins Tilo and Moya Softli of Seattle; and his only son, Victor Softli and his fiancé Ana Lovato. Ed also leaves his loving partner Inez Stanley to mourn him. Ed has 7 grandchildren and another due in November. Brothers; Cecil and wife Dorothy, Tony and wife Edna, and David Softli. Sisters: Muriel Softli, Linda Softli of Washington DC, and Katherine Softli of Portland, Oregon. Nephews: Tony Jr., Jeffery, and Joseph. Nieces: Cynthia, Julie and Lisa. "Uncle Ed" was the life of any gathering this family had. His personality was a unique and irreplaceable part of our lives. Ed will be missed dearly. Lucille "Lou" Kathleen Keys STAMBORSKY
A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, May 15th, 2002 at her home. Lou was the first of three children born to Alma and Arthur Keys. She also had one step sister and two step brothers born to Ellen and Arthur Keys. Lou was born in Baker, OR. After high school, she moved from Baker to begin working for Boeing. Lou was featured on the front cover of the February 1943 edition of the Boeing News. She married
David George Stamborsky of Seattle, June 25, 1943. Lou and Dave resided in the Kent and Burien area, raising their four children. She was an excellent cook, homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She always had a positive attitude and cared about people. Lou is survived by her husband, David Sr.; daughter, Sandy and sons, David Jr. and Wade. Her son Wayne passed away in 1992. Lou additionally is survived by her sister, Margaret "Peggy" Peck Rousseau of Spokane; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born December 12, 1918 in Chicago, IL., died May 29, 2002 in Des Moines, WA. Beloved father of Suzie/Lottie (Bernie) Kinney, Judy Renner, and Patsy (Ron) Hutchison; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A private burial has been held at Gethsemane Catholic cemetery. Daniel Edward STEIN
Born on December 24, 1979 in Seattle, Daniel passed away unexpectedly on May 22, 2002 at age 22. Daniel is a 2002 graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. He graduated from Henry M. Jackson High School (Mill Creek) as a 1998 National Merit Scholarship Commended Student. Daniel is survived by his loving parents, Donald and Linda and his brother Steven, Mill Creek. He will be deeply missed by his grandmother Agnes North, Anacortes, aunts and uncles, Tom and Pam Stein, Shoreline, Jim and Debbie Stein, Snoqualmie, Ellen and Doug Sellen, Mercer Island, Cindy Stein-Easton, Dutch Harbor, Alaska, Gail and Frank Boren, Friday Harbor, and John North, Seattle, and many cousins. Vivienne Marie STEWART
passed away on May 19, 2002 surrounded by her family. Born Vivienne Richardson December 18, 1925 in Windsor, Ontario. She moved to Seattle at a young age and graduated from West Seattle High in 1943. There she met and married
Deane Stewart, and started their family after his return from WWII. preceded in death by son, Jeffrey and husband Deane. Survived by children, Jan, Julie (Scott), Darel (Julie), Debbie and grandchildren, Kelly, Kyle, Carson, Carmen, Calvin and Kyle. Mom was the glue that held our family together, her love and complete devotion will never be replaced. We will mourn her deeply and miss her always. Remembrances may be made to Children's Hospital. Faye Wickstrom STIPEK
Born August 12, 1934 to Axel Carl and Phyllis Kage Wickstrom in Seattle's Columbus Hospital. Faye passed peacefully in Bremer ton's Harrison Memorial Hospital on May 22, 2002. She is survived by her loving husband of over 45 years, Robert B. Stipek of Hansville, their four children, Robert C. Stipek, Brian P. Stipek, Gwendolyn Joy Styke and Grant G. Stipek, all of whom live in the greater Puget Sound area, two grandchildren, Brandon Wolfe Styke and Sarah Caitlin Styke, and two brothers, Phillip Wickstrom of Tucson, Arizona and Tren Wickstrom of Seattle. Faye believed strongly in the value of education. She attended B.F. Day and John B. Allen Elementary Schools, Hamilton Jr. High and Lincoln High School. Faye earned over eight years of credits at the University of Washington, receiving degrees in English and Swedish and teaching credentials for grades K through 12. She taught in the Edmonds, Highline and Salt Lake City School districts, and most recently in the Bainbridge Island School District. She taught Swedish in the U. of W.'s Scandinavian Department, and children's and adult Swedish language classes at local Lutheran churches. She was a Camp Fire Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and an active volunteer in her children's schools during their childhood. She has written poetry and short stories through her adult life. Faye's Continuing Education classes at the University of Utah included classes from Dr. Calvin Taylor, the founder of Talents Unlimited, whose educational philosophies reinforced Faye's personal beliefs that every person has at least one talent that can be realized. She shared that knowledge with many students, providing them with hope for their futures while building their self-confidence. Every person who knew Faye loved her, particularly students who appreciated her support and encouragement in their lives. Faye's goodness of heart and generous, loving nature touched many lives. Faye loved her family and home deeply, both in this country and in her father's homeland, Sweden. Faye had just purchased a second home in Sweden near her father's childhood home. At Faye's request, there are no services nor memorials other than for her immediate family. Remembrances may be made to the Bainbridge Island Public Library, Bainbridge Island, WA. 98110. Harry H. Taniguchi, Sr., age 71, was born August 14, 1930 in Tacoma and died peace fully on May 25, 2002 at Seattle Keiro. Harry was a graduate of Stadium High School and Washington State University and was a Boeing retiree. Harry is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Elsie (Yotsuuye) Taniguchi; and children Harry Jr. of Chicago, Elaine Taniguchi Ingram (Walter), and grandchildren, Kelsey, Eric and Megan Ingram all of Mercer Island. He is also survived by his older brother Theodore (Akiko), nephew, Todd Taniguchi, niece, Alicia (Jimmy) Eng, mother-in-law, Kazue Yotsuuye, brothers-in-law, Tommy (Jane) Yotsuuye, Roy (Tracey) Yotsuuye; nieces, nephews and many cousins.
