Betty Jane FLAHERTY
March 5, 1920 - June 27, 2002
Betty Jane Flaherty, known affectionately as 'Aunt Betty' or 'B.G.' to many, passed away peacefully following heart surgery. Born in Mannington, West Virginia, Betty moved to Seattle in the late forties. She worked as a waitress for fifty-five years at The Wharf, John Franco's Hidden Harbor, The Athenian Inn and other Seattle restaurants. While working at the Athenian she enjoyed her cameo appearance in the movie Sleepless in Seattle. She volunteered regularly for homeless organizations, cancer victims, and she was a lifelong lover of animals. She is survived by her niece, Brena Collins and husband Ben, great niece Bethany Moore, husband George and daughter Samantha, cousin William K. Williams and wife Sharon; her beloved friend Eileen Plante; animal companions Alex, Meechee, and Sarge; as well as many dear friends. A Celebration of Betty's life will be held Sunday, August 11th, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Top of the Market, 93 Pike Street, suite # 307, Seattle, WA. He was born January 30, 1932 in Cloquet, MN.
He was a bachelor with a life-long passion for skiing.
He is survived by four sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Beverly A. FREEMAN
Beverly A. FREEMAN, 60, long time Seattle resident and community leader, passed away July 27 after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Louisiana, Beverly at age three moved to Seattle with her family. Beverly graduated from Garfield High School and the University of Oregon. She did her graduate work at the University of Washington and Pacific Coast Banking School. After working as a Vice President of Rainier Bank, Beverly became a Vice President and a Director at The Citigroup Private Bank. Beverly was a staunch believer in giving back to the community. Her long list of community activities included: Totem Girls Scout Council (president) Soroptimist International-Seattle (president) Puget Sound Big Sisters (president/ secretary) Washington State Board of Health (chairman) Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges Washington State Board of Accountancy Municipal League (treasurer) Venture Club of the Americas (regional governor/chapter president) Washington State Hospital Commission Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. United Inter-City Development Foundation King County Chapter - American Red Cross City Club United Way Audit, Allocations and Purchase of Service Committees (chairman) She was honored in: 1978 as Time Magazine Newsmaker of Tomorrow-Seattle 1979 in Who's Who in the West, 1979 in Who's Who in America, 1989 as Harlem YMCA Black Achiever 2000 by Big Brother/Big Sisters Leadership Award. Beverly was predeceased by her father and mother, Roy and Sable Freeman and her sister, Evelyn. She is survived by her sisters, Sedonia Young and Mary Alice Mitchell; her brothers, Vance, Earl and Roy Freeman Jr; her nephews Robert L. Taylor III, Craig Freeman and Vance Freeman Jr.; and her nieces, Lacy and Allison Mitchell, Nicole, Danielle and Shavahn Freeman, Carla Young and Ta'aga Young-Paialii, Renee Rice and Hope Freeman; god-daughter Mariea Taylor; cousins, Leo and Leslie Pollard and a vast number of friends. Friends and family not only loved Beverly but held her in most high esteem. Beverly will be remembered for her love of travel, her gourmet cooking and knowledge of fine wines, her strength and courage, her extraordinary achievement, her generosity and dedication to young women and to her community, her integrity and her beautiful smile. She will be sorely missed. The Memorial Service will be at the First AME Church at 1522 - 14th Ave., Seattle on August 2nd at 11:00 a.m. Beverly requested that flowers not be sent but remembrances can be made to The Beverly Freeman Leadership Fund, Totem Girl Scouts, P.O. Olga G. GALLAGHER
Born Oct. 16, 1913 in Port Blakely, WA.; passed away July 24, 2002 in Marysville. She lived an adventurous life as an officer's wife, traveling and residing throughout Europe and South America, including Germany, Panama and Guatemala. She also was very involved with the Children's Orthopedic Hospital and the American Cancer Society. Foremost, she was simply a great Mom. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Gallagher, Jr., in 1989. Survived by her daughter, Marion J. Leary; grandson, Brian Griffiths; granddaughter-in-law, Josie Griffiths and great grandchildren, Bryce and Kelsey Griffiths. No services at her request. Cecily Fleetwood Forbes GARRETSON
Cecily Fleetwood Forbes GARRETSON, 82, of San Diego, CA., died peacefully after a long illness on July 24, 2002. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Brigadier General Frank E. Garretson, USMC (Ret.), her loving children, John Garretson, Capt. MC USN (Ret.), of Farmington, N.M., Cecily Parsons, of Poway, CA., Sarah Jane Zimmerman, of Big Pine, CA.; eight grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Born in Kansas City, MO, her family later moved to Seattle, WA. where she attended public schools, was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and received her AB degree from the University of Washington in 1941. After WWII she moved with her husband and growing family to Georgia, Virginia, Hawaii, California, and Washington, D.C. At each location she became a dynamic force in a variety of activities; she taught and practiced art therapy at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C.; she was Chairwoman of Red Cross Volunteers, in Quantico, VA.; she was President of the PTA at John Eaton School in Washington, D.C., and she was a Cub Scout Den Leader in both San Diego and Washington, D.C. A loving wife and mother, she was also a talented artist in a variety of media, producing several hundred pieces which are displayed in homes across the country. She studied eastern philosophy with Krishnamurti and she loved music of all kinds. An avid reader, she loved the New Yorker Magazine, National Geographic and British mysteries. Her family and friends will miss her terribly and will celebrate her life with a Memorial Service on July 29th at Clairemont Mortuary at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests do nations to San Diego Hospice. Cleline Barnes GILLETT
passed away July 28, 2002 in Bellevue, Washington. She was born in Watsonville, California August 13, 1933. Graduated from Watsonville High School in 1951. Active in extra-curricular activities and Worthy Advisor of the Watsonville Rainbow Girls Chapter. Attended Monterey Peninsula College. After marriage to Richard Gillett, a Coast Guard officer, she was involved in many Coast Guard Wives Clubs, the Red Cross, and volunteer activities. The Guam Legislature in a special resolution commended Mrs. Gillett for her contributions to the island's welfare. It cited her for her leadership of the Marianas Naval Officers Wives Club, which resulted in significant donations to Guam charities and scholarships to the University of Guam. The legislature commended her also for her membership on the Executive Committee of the highly successful Guam Special Olympics. Travel was a big part of her life. She worked for 12 years as a travel agent in San Francisco and on the Eastside. After retirement in Bellevue she was a member of Kathleen Harris Circle of Overlake Service League and Bellevue Welcome Wagon serving as president from 1983/84. She also volunteered at Bellevue Art Museum, the American Cancer Society breast cancer program Reach to Recovery and at the Seattle Visitor Center. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Richard (Dick) Gillett an aunt and numerous cousins. At her request no Funeral Service will be held. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, August 3rd from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 14130 S.E. 49th Place, Bellevue. Services will be held on Friday, August 2nd, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Northwest Church of Christ, 15555 15th N.E. in Shoreline. Donald M. GRIMES
He died the way he lived; strong and independent. Donald M. Grimes, 92 years old on July 16th, was a widower for 8 years and remained engaged and fascinated by life until the very end. He was married
to Vera Nelson for 54 years. He is survived by his son Don, Jr., and his wife Patricia, of Manchester (WA) and daughter Sue Poler, and her husband John of Federal Way. We will all miss his unforgettable sense of humor, great wit, and his unique ability to connect with people and dogs of any age. He loved to sing and dance with friends and family. He had a magical way of tuning into his grandchildren and he will be missed by all of them. They include Brad Grimes and wife Katherine, Steve Poler and wife Hillary, Ryan Poler and wife Stacey, Aaron Berntson and wife Anna, Glenn Berntson and wife Chris tine, and Gary Berntson and wife Ewann. He also had seven great-grandchildren and was called 'old grandpa'. Sisters Margaret Morgan, Mary Anne Normandin, and Helen Lundeen also survive him as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edward (Chappy) and Watson, and sister Marjorie. Don retired from Kenworth Motor Truck Co. in 1969 after working at the factory for 41 years. He started by sweeping the floors and retired as the sales manager. He resumed his career with Kenworth Northwest selling trucks on a part time basis for several years. His passion was the trucking industry and he loved attending trucking association conven tions where he was able to maintain his industry contacts. Don and Vera were residents of West Seattle since 1940. They had life long friendships from grade school, high school, and the neighbor hoods where they lived. For many years, Don and Vera were active at Alki Church where among other duties he served as the capital drive chairman for the new sanctuary in 1958. Memorial Fund donations may be made to Alki Church at 6115 S.W. Hinds St., Seattle, 98116. There will be no service at his request. (Obit dated 07/28/2002.)
William Charles "Gus" GUSTAFSON
Born August 28, 1937, died July 26, 2002. Gus graduated from the University of Illinois with a doctorate in load dynamics and spacecraft analysis with a specialty in structural engineering. He was a supervisor in technical staff organization for the Boeing Aerospace Company. His last assignment was on the inertial upper stage program to put spacecraft in orbit. Gus worked for the Boeing Company for over 20 years. Gus was a gourmet diner, avid world traveler, bicyclist, snow skier and square dancer. He was a member of Wallingford United Methodist Church. He was also a volunteer for the Chicken Soup Brigade, and a member of Mature Friends. Services will be 7 p.m., Thursday, August 1, at Wallingford United Methodist Church, 2115 - N. 42nd St. (Obit dated 07/28/2002.)
