Herman A. STEINBACH
Was born in Ferguson, MO., (near St. Louis) on March 1, 1916. He moved to Seattle with his wife and oldest son in late 1945 and died in Seattle on July 23, 2002 surrounded by his loving family. Herman retired from the University of Washington in 1978. In his retirement he enjoyed good health, his family, golf, gardening and some traveling. His life was devoted to his home and family, who were Virginia, his loving wife of nearly 62 years, sons John and Tom and their wives, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, plus three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren by marriage. Herman had the gift of understanding and could engineer and build anything that was needed to make things work. A private Service will be held per his wishes. (Obit dated 07/29/2002.)
Marion L. Field Rukas STRINGER
Longtime Ballard resident, passed away July 26, 2002. Born April 17, 1916 in Detroit, MI., her family moved to the Seattle area in the 1930s. She married
Frank Rukas and they had three daughters. After she and Frank went their separate ways, she married
James K. Stringer in 1953, the same year she graduated Edison Tech. School and received her LPN license. She worked for Swedish and Ballard Hospitals for 13 years, retiring in 1968. Marion was an active member of the Ballard Eagles Lodge 2141 in the '50s and '60s and has been a member of Crown Hill United Methodist Church since 1981. preceded in death by her husband, James and brothers, Ned and George Field. Survived by her daughters, Eleanor Anderson, Carolyn Unick and Jean (Mike) Connelly; grandchildren, Jennifer Unick, David (Dianne) Connelly; Matt Connelly and Brooke Anderson; one great grandson, Zachary. Memorial service Fri., August 2nd at 2 p.m. at Crown Hill United Methodist Church. (Obit dated 07/31/2002.)

Syd SUCKLING
Was born July 10, 1908 in Birmingham, England but was raised in the U.S.A. He died July 28th. He graduated from Washington State University in dairy manufacturing, spending his working years at Carnation Milk Company in various capacities. During WWII he served in the Navy as tower operator at a naval training base for aviators. Syd is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elinor, and his 2 daughters Dr. Barbara Tittle and Carol Bird. Other survivors are son-in-law, Dr. Richard Tittle and Sister Doris Dennison. Grandchildren are Anna and Robin Tittle and Jared and Signe. He has numerous nieces and nephews and 2 close younger cousins, John and Jim Pendleton. He was a member of Teke fraternity, the Institute of Food Technologists, Senior Kiwanis, Seattle Totems Trailer Club, Wedgwood Jet Set and Hamilton House. Memorial Services will be held at Sand Point Community Methodist Church on Saturday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made to the church or a cancer society. (Obit dated 08/01/2002.)

Lawrence "Larry" Robert SWEDELIUS
Born December 9, 1919 in Gillette, Wyoming; passed away July 24, 2002 in Des Moines WA, at age 82. Survived by his daughter, Lynda L. Eck; son, Dave K. Swedelius; grandchildren, David and Bobby Swedelius, Chelsey, Amanda and Tiffany Eck; brother, Ken Swedelius. preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marga ret "Peggy" in 2001. Larry served in the CCC Camps in Wyoming and moved to Seattle in the 1940's where he met Peggy. He lost his eye sight in an industrial accident and worked for the Blind Association, running cafeterias in the old Public Service Hospital, the Everett Federal Building cafeteria and N.O.A.A. cafeteria, retiring at the age of 72. My Dad was loved by all who met him. He was honorable and true to his word always. Dad loved the Lord greatly, and I know that he is with Mom, praising the Lord. Dave and I love you, Dad and will miss you and Mom. Memorial Service Thursday, August 1; 2:00 p.m., Boulevard Park Presbyterian Church, 1822 S. 128th St. Seattle. "Grandma" Louise TAYLOR 86, passed away August 1, 2002. She was the beloved mother of Candy (David) Moberg. Grandmother of five grandchildren and sev eral great grandchildren. Sister of Patricia MacKay. She was predeceased by her husband, "Smokey" Taylor in 1968 and son, Dick Taylor in 1992. No service at family re quest. Private cremation. Elizabeth (Betty) Mackintosh TENNEY
Died July 16, at her home on Bainbridge Island, Washington, of cancer. She was born February 11, 1921, in Yakima to Dr. Peter Grant Mackintosh and Mrs. Jessie (Ballard) Mackintosh. She graduated with honors from the University of Washington in 1943. Through out her life she worked as a writer, first in radio, then advertising, then free lancing fiction and nonfiction to local and national publications. She volunteered many hours to activities for school, church, writing clubs, garden clubs and political campaigns. Betty enthusiastically gave her time, energy, boundless love and a great sense of fun to her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard Tenney, their three children, five grandchildren, and other relatives. (Obit dated 07/27/2002.)
Margaret McKnight THARP
Was born November 8, 1908, in Renton, WA. to John Henry McKnight and Elizabeth Richards McKnight. Margaret died on July 19, 2002. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ellen Hickok, her son, John J. Tharp, and is survived by her daughters Marilyn Clise (Duane), Jeanene Tharp; daughter-in-law Juliet R. Tharp; grandsons John M. Tharp (Nancy), Michael D. Clise (Lisa); granddaughter Elizabeth L. DeSmith (Chuck); and, great-grandsons Joshua Clise and Samuel DeSmith. Margaret was born into a Renton/Newcastle pioneering family. She was graduated from Renton High School in 1926: attended the University of Oregon and the University of Washington as a music major, and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She was a member of The Highlands Community Church, P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter E I, and a life-time member of The Renton Historical Society. Margaret's father, Henry McKnight, for whom McKnight Middle School was named, owned Williams & McKnight Mercantile, an integral part of Renton's burgeoning economy and culture, from 1905 to 1945; he was an active supporter of public education in Renton, served on the Renton School Board for twenty years, and was instrumental in the construction of Renton High School. Margaret worked throughout her professional career as an accountant for numerous firms and family businesses. A woman of strong character, faith, and generosity of spirit, Margaret loved her family, the camaraderie of friends, her garden, and her daily long walks through town. In lieu of flowers donations in Margaret's memory may be made to the Renton High School Excellence in Education Program, P.O. Box 4011, Renton, WA. 98057-4011. Frederick W. THIELE
Age 82, of Edmonds passed away peacefully on July 9, 2002. He and Miriam ("Mimi") were married
60 years. Fred was an active member of the Lake Forest Park Presbyterian Church. Fred graduated from the California Institute of Technology (CIT, "Cal Tech") in 1941 in electrical engineering. During WWII, Fred served on a team at Cal Tech and NAS Inyokern which developed aircraft rocket weaponry. Later, he worked at North American Aviation rocket division. In 1954, Fred joined Bumstead-Woolford Co. in Seattle, an engineering and construction firm, eventually becoming a partner. In retirement, he developed condos in Edmonds. Fred was on the Cal Tech ski team and continued to ski into his 70s. An accomplished sailor, Fred was a past commodore of the Corinthian Yacht Club of Edmonds. He sailed his boat "Sea Joy" across the English Channel and up the Seine River to Paris, and sailed from Seattle to Alaska. Fred is survived by his wife Miriam; son, David; brother, John Thiele; sister, Dorie Rush Taylor and brother-in-law, James Taylor; nephew, Anthony Rush; and nieces, Linda and Jessica Thiele.
