Jacob E. UHRICH
1943 - 2000

Jake was born in Norman, Oklahoma on December 20, 1943. He grew up in Seattle and in Bozeman, Montana, graduating from Sammamish High School, Bellevue, Washington, in 1962. He was awarded a scholarship from the University of Chicago, which he attended for one year and received his Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Washington in 1970 after completing three years military service during the Vietnam Conflict. He went on to receive a Master's degree in Math from the University of Illinois at Normal, IL. Jake worked briefly for the Royal Insurance Co., in San Francisco, then returned to school and was near completing his Ph.D. in Math at the University of Washington when he took a job as Math Teacher at the, then named, Olympia Vocational Technical Institute, now called South Puget Sound Community College. Jacob's military service was exemplary. He successfully completed Intelligence School and Officer Candidate School, immediately after basic training and reported for duty, in country, Vietnam, as G-2 Air Intelligence Officer, in 1967. He completed his three-year tour at Fort Hood, TX. and left the Service as a First Lieutenant. Just out of the Army, Jake took to the sport of Auto Rallying, often sacrificing the paint on his '66 Corvette while running a particularly fast leg down a winding gravel road. He played a decent game of tennis and fell in with a serious group of squash enthusiasts while at the University of Washington. After discovering the fulfillment of distance running in the mid-70s, he always ran: Some years, only 5 or 10 miles a week but many years with 3 or 4 major competitive marathons. Golf took him over in his mid-40s and has grown steadily to become his major sport. Jake's 23 years at South Puget Sound Community College were punctuated by a continuous string of rewarding commitments, the first being his love of teaching. His students often told him how much they appreciated his ability to open the world of mathematics to them. Fellow instructors praise his methods and classroom style. Even his father, a retired math teacher, who has sat in on many of Jake's classes, feels that Jake was uniquely gifted in the way he taught. He participated in a project that resulted in the production of a set of video math-statistics classes that were shown on public access television, through which participants were eligible to receive college credit. He played a leadership role in creating the Washington State Federation of Teachers, local at South Puget Sound Community College and served as Faculty Union President and Washington Federation of Teachers Vice President. He sat on the district's negotiating committee and served as head negotiator for the last six years. From his efforts, the Washington Federation of Teachers at South Puget Sound Community College has always enjoyed trusted leadership. His presence in this process has served to achieve a greater professional recognition for faculty at the college. Jake met and in 1986, married Cynthia Drummond Uhrich, also on staff at South Puget Sound Community College. In 1990, their son, Christopher, was born. They both take great pride in the family home on Tauten-Inlet that he and Cindy designed and built, incorporating a variety of personalized features. Survived by: wife, Cynthia R.
