Roderick Lawrence BUHTZ
Born in Seattle, WA. on October 4, 1924. Died April 2, 2001 at age 76 (stroke) in Tofino, British Columbia. Son of Lawrence and Eduma Buhtz. Seattle businesswoman (Western Cooperage, Western Cabinet). Avid outdoorsman (fishing, huting, float planes). Retired to West Coast of Vancouver Island in late 170's where he charted fishermen and hosted guests at his fishing lodge Tofino Swell for the past 30 years. Active in fish hatchery and conservation programs in Tofino. He will be deeply missed by his wife Betsy Buhtz of Charleston, South Carolina; sister Natalie Cochrane of Silverdale; children Robin Yates of Lynnwood, Darla Smith of Seattle, Richard Buhtz of Greyland, Melissa Whyte of Port Alberni, B.C. and grandchildren, Jocelyn Smith of Snoqualmie, Zachary Gordon of Lynnwood, Tyler Smith of Sedro Woolley, Brent and Carrie Buhtz of Greyland, Jordan, Kelcey and Danica Whyte of Port Alberni, B.C. and many friends who hold loving memories. Patricia Lee CHAPMAN, 61, of Seattle died Wednesday April 4, 2001. She was born April 24, 1939 to Bud and Dorothy Chapman. She was well known and loved as a member of the Burien antique community. She is survived by two daughters Lynn Esquibel, Theresa Gault and two sons Mark and Mike Neiertz. Debbie CHRISTOPHERSEN
Was called to Heaven April 2, 2001. Debbie, just 43, fought courageously during each battle that she faced in the last 10 years. Deb lived for her family, husband Dale, sons Jesse and Nick, daughter Lindsay, and her in laws Ella and Jack who were proud to have her as their daughter. She also leaves Vicki Osnes and her husband Larry who were honored to call her sister and dearest friend. She loved hot rod cars, beautiful flowers, rock and roll music and funny jokes. Thank you to Bartell for support, kindness, and understanding. Thank you to Deb's doctors and nurses for the special care you gave her. Our beautiful brave warrior will forever be in our hearts. Hermine died peacefully on April 3, 2001. Hermine was born on March 18, 1904 in Riga, Latvia. She came to the U.S.A. in 1950. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Janis (1990). Hermine will be missed by her many friends. She will be remembered for her kindness to others, her love of nature, especially her garden, and her dedication to her church, Seattle Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church. Robert Bruce CLIFTON
Robert Bruce CLIFTON, 92, of Seattle, a remembered man, died March 26, 2001. Bob was born February 10, 1909 at Tolland, Colorado. His parents were Bruce and Elizabeth McHenry Clifton. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in Denver as a Mining Engineer and worked several jobs in that field and later as a Carrier in the Denver Post Office. Bob was appointed a Post Office Inspector in 1942 and lived and worked throughout the Seattle Division. During World War II he worked as an inspector in the Territory of Alaska where he met his beloved wife, Lola, who was a supervisor in the Fairbanks post office. Bob's expertise as a Postal Inspector was in criminal investigations, where he was very successful. He handled many major cases and wrote a book, "Murder by Mail" about his work. Bob was promoted to Postal Inspector in Charge of the Seattle Division and retired from that position on December 31, 1966. In his retirement he and Lola traveled extensively, and after her death he married
Ethel Eves. He loved Ethel and took care of her until her death in 1998. Bob lived for many years in LaConner, where he developed real estate and was active in community matters. He was also active in the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Postal Inspectors and in Rotary. He is survived by his beloved Vicki and Richard Anderson and William A. Anderson and other relatives and many loving friends. A Celebration of his Life will be held at the Noble Firs Condominiums Clubhouse, 1600 N.E. 140th, Seattle on April 27th at 2 p.m. Memorials should be sent to the Rotary Clubs of LaConner, PO Box 2111, LaConner, WA. 98257. Laura Jean CONNOLLY
Age 60, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2001, of cancer. Laura was born on June 23, 1940 in Powell, Wyoming to Robert and Helen Ruzick. The family moved to Ryegate, Montana in 1950, where she met and married
her husband, Pat Connolly in 1967. The Connolly's lived in Lansing, Michigan where Pat covered state news and politics for the Associated Press until his transfer to the AP Bureau in Seattle as a feature writer. After Pat died in 1984, Laura returned to teaching school in the Edmonds School District. Laura is survived by her sons David of Vancouver, WA. and Richard of Bothell, WA.; mother Helen Ruzick of Ryegate, WY.; brothers Bob Ruzick of Saudi Arabia and Jim Ruzick of Billings, MT.; grandchildren Kyle, Bailey, Ashley, Alyssa, Anthony, Josh, Brittney, Veronica and David; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 7 p.m. at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 1240 N.E. 127th St., Seattle. Elizabeth (Betty) Ulrich on May 1, 1954 at Las Vegas, NV. He re tired after 32 years from the claims department of Unigard Insurance Group and subsequently owned and operated Cooper Claims. He was a member of Fairwood Community United Methodist Church, the Maplewood Men's Club, Washington State Horsemen and Black Country Horsemen. He was a W.W. II veteran and member of the American Legion, VFW, and DAV. Surviving are his wife, daughters Diane Cooper, Rose Ridlon, Patti Amundson, son Cleve Cooper and eight grandchildren, sister Viola Nold of San Antonio, TX., Gladys Frazier of Dalton, GA., Delila Jager and Dorothy Tobin of Gettysburg, SD. Barbara C. COPENHAVER
Barbara C. COPENHAVER 87, of Bellevue, WA, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, April 7th after a brief struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. She was born on the highline in MT., on a farm near Malta to Lin and Marie O'Brien on August 22, 1913. she graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Havre, MT in 1939. she met her husband James L. Copenhaver at a dance in Ledger, MT. They were married
in Seattle on February 8, 1941 and had a full life enjoying all the amenities of living in the Pacific Northwest while keeping ties with their Montana roots. James retired in 1980 after 40 years as an engineer at the Boeing Co. They had six children: Pat Copenhaver of Enumclaw, WA; Kay Solemsaas and Susan Kola, both of Kalispell, MT; Michael, deceased; Steven Copenhaver of Carmel, CA; and Maureen Copenhaver of Lynnwood, WA. She was preceded in death by her infant son Michael and her husband James. She is survived by her five children, her sister Jean Korum of Edgewood, WA, 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. she will be remembered for her spunky humor and easy, go-with-the-flow manner. She was completely unselfish. She will be sorely missed. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 - 7 p.m. at Green's Bellevue Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday April 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bellevue. Burial will be Thursday 10 a.m. at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, Bellevue.
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Strain COPERNOLL
Daughter of Thomas and Martha "Mattie" Strain, Betty was born and lived most of her 83 years in Seattle and on Lake Sammamish. She passed away peacefully on March 28, 2001 at Robinswood Pointe Senior Living in Bellevue, where she resided with her devoted husband of 59 years, Robert. Betty grew up in West Seattle and was the vale dictorian of the Class of 1935 at West Seattle High School. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1939 where she was active in Mortar Board, Delta Delta Delta, the Totem Club and served as president of the YWCA. She received her teaching certificate a year later and began a career that included teaching high school English and social studies in the Portland Public School System to teaching English to Foreign students at Sammamish High School and Bellevue Community College. Betty was involved in a number of volunteer activities, including serving as president of the Mortar Board Alumnae and president of the Portland Mills College Mothers Club, and in a variety of capacities for the First Congregational Church of Bellevue, UCC. Betty enjoyed host ing friends and church youth groups at her Lake Sammamish home of 25 years, as well as travel ing, reading, music, theatre, and gardening. In her earlier days she enjoyed skiing and hiking. She is survived by her husband Robert, daughters Grace Bighouse and husband Earl, Margaret Copernoll and husband John Meilert, and Roberta Johnson and husband David, and grandsons J. Jerald Lee and wife Sara, and Randall Lee. The family wishes to express appreciation to the devoted staff of Robinswood Pointe who provided professional and loving care to Betty. Catherine M. 'Cait' CURTIN
Catherine M. "Cait" Curtin, a Portland native, businesswoman, and history writer died of can cer on Sunday, March 18, in Seattle. She was 49. Ms. Curtin graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1969 and from the University of Portland in 1973. She earned her master's degree in Irish History from University of Cork in Ireland in 1976. She wrote "Doing Business in China: A Historical Perspective," University of Portland Magazine, 1987; "Fred Bitte: A Seaman's Journey to Oregon," Oregon Historical Quarterly, 1980; "The All-Ireland Cultural Society of Portland," Irish American Cultural Societies, 1983; and her own book on Portland's historic Multnomah Hotel (now the Embassy Suites downtown), "The Grand Lady of Fourth Avenue: A Historic Perspective," 1997. Ms. Curtin worked for Nike Inc. through much of the 1980s and founded CMC Research International, a market research firm in Portland in 1987. She was President of the West Coast Division of the Kintock Group of Philadelphia at the time of her death. She was president and served on the Board of Oregon Special Olympics from 1982 to 1989, and is listed in "Who's Who of American Women." On April 3, 1998, she married
Dennis D. Olson of Seattle. She enjoyed traveling, reading, biking and skiing. Beside her husband, Ms. Curtin is survived by her mother, Olive Curtin of Tuala tin; sister Frances Woolsey of Ridgefield, Wash.; brothers Edmond of Salem, Thomas and Peter of Portland, Matthew of San Francis co, and Joseph and John of Seattle; her husband's children Shannon Bjornson and Leif Olson of Seattle; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and her husband's grandchildren. There will be a private service. Friends are invited to attend a gathering on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. in the Queen Mary Room of the Embassy Suites Hotel, 319 S.W. Pine St., Portland.
