Gene GEORGE
Mercer Island, Washington. Born in San Fran cisco December 10, 1933. In loving memory, lost a tremendously courageous battle against Multiple Myeloma on April 3, 2001. He is survived by Iris, his loving wife and soulmate of 45 years. Hero to his three children, Greg (wife Susan Spezza), Jennifer (husband of Jeff Heilman), and Chris (wife Joyce Wong). Loving Poppa to Addy, Tyler, John and James. He leaves his brother, John Harris and many, many wonderful friends. Aside from the hollowed grounds of the San Francisco Golf Club and assorted other available golf courses, as opportunities presented themselves, he graduated from San Francisco public schools, attended San Francisco City Col lege and San Francisco State, followed by serving his country in the United States Army. As a veteran Campbell Soup executive, he found Valhalla in Mercer Island, where he embraced his second career helping people buy and sell their homes. Past president of the Mercer Island Beach Club, he was also a member of the Mercer Island Rotary, a volunteer to "English as a Second Language" and "Invest in Youth" and an active parishioner at Saint Therese. Avid lifelong golfer (always with a little some thing at stake, no more than a dollar/9 holes), experienced and proficient sailor, bridge partner, enthusiastic tennis player, skier and athlete. A true and beloved friend to each and every life he touched. His zest for living shall remain with us as he sets out on his next journey. He will be greatly missed on this earth, and as he reach es the mountain top, only then shall he begin to climb. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, April 16 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Therese's Catholic Church, 35th and Marion, Seattle. Arthur Hooper GERALD, Jr. 74, Born May 19, 1926 in Milford, MA. Died April 6, 2001 in Bellevue, WA. preceded in death by his father, Arthur Hooper, Sr., his mother, Evelyn Viletta (Lyford), brothers Clyde and Francis, sister Ruth, and his first wife, Jean Yasuko (Matsumura). Leaves his wife of 4 years Alice Messier of Bellevue, son, Peter-Paul (Pepi) and daughter-in-law, Erica of Mercer Island, step-daughters Caroline, Doris, Mary, and Laura, step-sons Arthur and Raymond as well as numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. Graduate of Westwood (MA) High School and Worchester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts (BSME). Member of Theta Chi Fraternity. World War II Combat Veteran, European Theater, served with 101st Airborne Division, 327th Glider Regiment, 82nd 325th Glider and 94th Infantry (Reserve). Resident of Mercer Island for 34 years, moved to Bellevue in 1997. Lured to Washington in 1952 in awe of the snow and mountains, he became a long-time employee of Boeing. Named Manufacturing Engineer of the Year in 1980 for work on 767. Retired in 1988 as Gold Card Boeing Management Association member. A native New Englander and proud of his heritage, on his paternal side Arthur was descended from William White of the Mayflower; on his maternal side, John Lyford (1624) 2nd Sailing of the Mayflower. His paternal Great-grandfather was a ship's captain from Dennysville, Maine in the mid-1800's. Inheriting a love for the sea, living summers on his father's boat, he was a lifelong sailor and rarely went without a sailboat. He enjoyed sailing the waters of the Northwest with family, friends, and Fleet 5 of Catalina 34's. An enthusiastic skier since living in Washington to the very last, sneaking in 30+ days of skiing this season, Arthur supported his sport as a charter stockholder of Crystal Mountain, his membership of the Ancient Skiers, SkiBacs, the Krazy Ladies (and Laddies) Ski Bus, and Navy League. He passes on his passion for sailing and skiing to his son and daughter-in-law, Pepi and Erica. Arthur also was a member of the Museum of Flight and the U.S. Lighthouse Society and founding member of the National Lighthouse Center and Museum. A sports fan of Mercer Island High School football and basketball teams and long-time Husky Football Season ticket holder. Beyond his accomplishments and memberships, Arthur will be remembered for his fundamental personality comprised of his love, generosity, energy, optimism and friendship. He leaves us with the wind at his back, snow under his feet, and forever young. A Memorial Service will be held April 11th, 11 a.m. at St. Louise Catholic Church, 141 156th Ave SE, in Bellevue. Gary David GILBERT
Our beloved son, brother, and grandson, passed away on March 30, 2001. After graduating with honors from Snohomish High School in June of 2000, David attended the University of Washington as a pre-engineering student. David loved the outdoors, sports, art, and his project car. David is survived by parents Bruce and Kathy Brown of Snohomish, Gary and Heather Gilbert of Bothell, along with his stepsisters Carlene Kennedy and Elizabeth Brown. Les was proud to be a Pemco Insurance Agent over the past 32 years. He was born on October 6, 1936 in Konawa, Oklahoma and passed away April 4, 2001 in Seattle, Washington. He is survived by his loving family, soulmate Judy Lehman, son Randy Ginn (Kelly), daugh ter Becky Ginn (Dawn Leverett), granddaughter Sydni Ann Ginn, 'semi-adopted' sons Trent, Troy and Mark Lehman and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Elizabeth Mary "Betsy" GRIMES
Elizabeth Mary "Betsy" GRIMES was born October 8, 1930, in Washington D.C. to Blaise and Betsy Mary deSibour. She died peacefully on March 31st at 70 years young. Betsy spent her early years in the DC area, attended Madeira, spent summers in Henderson, New York, went to England with the Girl Scouts, and went on to Smith College, in Massachusetts. There she met her husband, George, who attended Amherst, and they married
on December 15, 1951. They moved to Denver, Colorado, where Betsy worked as a teacher for several years until the children arrived. She was a wonderful mother, a dedicated wife and good friend to many, moving with her husband to Indianapolis, Portland, Kansas City, and finally settling 20 years ago in Seattle. Once the children were grown, she and George traveled to England, France, Scotland, and wintered in Hillsboro, Florida. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, Junior League, the Sunset Club, and the Seattle Tennis Club. Betsy enjoyed entertaining, lively conversation, her garden and her children and grandchildren. In her heyday she was an avid tennis player, and always had a flair for fashion and style. She is survived by her loving husband, George; her son Hall of Yakima; her son Peter, daughter-in-law Betsy and their sons Andrew and Jon of Seattle; her daughter Becky Hanenkrat, son-in-law Dan, grandson Doug Gilmore, stepsons Robert and Eric Hanenkrat of Portland; and her brother Blaise deSibour of New Jersey. Born September 16, 1905, passed away April 6, 2001. She was a past member of Cyclamin Chapter O.E.S. in Auburn. Laura was preceded in death by her husband Lyle B. Hadley in 1991. John "Johnny" V. HAGOPIAN
Age 79, born Dec. 27, 1921; passed away April 3, 2001 from a heart attack. He was raised in South Park and graduated from Cleveland H.S. in 1940, he served in the U.S.A.A.F. during W.W. II. John worked in the automobile industry for 40+ years, from Beverly Park Auto Rebuild to retiring from State Farm Insurance in 1990. His passions in life were traveling and cars, along with being an avid fisherman, all which developed many friendships over the years. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him and always remembered for his wit, business sense, and flair for the way he lived his life. He is survived by his beloved wife Sylvia, daughter Sandra Powers, brother Harold Hagopian, granddaughters Kari Graham, Kelly Kreutzer and great-grandchildren Taylor and Hunter Graham. Mildred "Milly" Kirk HALE
passed away April 2, 2001. Milly was born in Duncan OK on July 7, 1933. She married
Reid Hale November 25, 1952 and moved to Seattle in 1954. Reid and Milly settled in Burien in 1960 to raise two sons Douglas and Gordon. Milly moved with Reid to Bothell in 1988. She was a T.C.U. graduate, elementary school teacher and Executive Secretary for Seattle area travel agencies (UTravel and Apex). Milly is survived by her husband Reid Hale along with; Douglas and wife Kathy Hale, daughters Sarah and Jessica; Gordon and wife Brenda Hale, daughter Danielle. Services to be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, April 7th at Bleitz Funeral Services, 316 Florentia St., Seattle WA. 98109. Remembrances sent to Evergreen Cancer Center or Evergreen Hospice. Vernon A. HALLEK
A resident of Bellevue and also Kirkland for 42 years, died April 2, 2001 at Group Health Hospital. He was 79 years old. Vernon was raised in Browerville, Minnesota. He worked in the naval shipyard in Bremerton, WA., prior to joining the Army Air Corps during W.W. II. After his discharge from service, he worked for City Light on the Ross Dam project and later he went to work for Washington State Highways as a surveyor and concrete specialist involving bridge building and roads. He returned to The University of Washington and graduated in electrical engineering in 1956. He went to work for Boeing, where he worked on numerous missile projects. He retired in 1981. Post retirement he enjoyed time with the Eastside Bridge Club, working on his computer, writing programs and also spending time with family. He was predeceased by son, Stephen. He is survived by wife, Vivian and former wife, Joyce Munas; sister, Dorothy Layton of Sacramento, CA.; and children, Sharon (Louie) DeMaria of Calgary, Alberta, David of Bellevue, Richard (Mary) of Shelton, WA., Vernalee (Jim) Lindemann of Bellevue, Scott (Jerri) of Lake Stevens, WA., 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
