Wendell B. LILE

Respected Northwest Businessman Dies Respected businessman, entrepreneur, loving husband, father and friend, Wendell B. Lile, died Thursday, April 5th in Portland, Oregon. He was 74. Mr. Lile, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Lile International Companies for 43 years, was viewed as a pioneer and leading participant in the Northwest transportation industry. He will be long-remembered as a visionary in the growth and development of his own company while taking a leading role in industry policy creation designed to benefit both the consuming public and employees of his firm. Born on January 14, 1927 in Ellendale, North Dakota, as the 7th of 15 children of Hubert and Thelma Lile, he learned and accepted the need for hard work at an early age, becoming a young entrepreneur - shining shoes, delivering newspapers, scrubbing floors and shoveling snow. At the age of 15, Wendell left Ellendale to join other family members in Puyallup, Washington where he finished his secondary education at Puyallup High School and later attended the University of Washington. In 1951 and upon completion of 2 years of service in the US Army Air Corps Division and an additional 4 years in the Army Reserves, Wendell relocated to Alaska where he took the position of driver and warehouseman for Martin Van Lines. He was soon promoted to Operations Manager and transferred in 1956 to Martin Van Lines' facility in Seattle, Washington where he was appointed General Manager. In 1959 he left Martin Van Lines to purchase his own company, Lile Moving and Storage, initially with a single location in Tacoma, Washington. Under his guidance and leadership, the company expanded its service offerings from an exclusive focus on household goods moving and storage to include handling of high value products, commercial warehousing and distribution, office and industrial moving, logistics and supply-chain management and as a domestic and international carrier of household goods for relocating military service members. Under his stewardship, the company grew from 2 to more than 200 trucks and from 5 to 400 employees. An additional 12 locations were established over the years, primarily in the Northwest, with the latest expansion occurring in Hayward, California in November of 2000. His professional career also involved many years of service on the Board of Directors for both the Oregon Draymen and Warehousemen's Association and the American Moving and Storage Association. His firm affiliated with NorthAmerican Van Lines in 1975 and has, since that time, consistently been ranked among the top dozen North American agents for volume of business sold and quality of service provided. A committed and loving husband, father and grandfather, he found little additional time for personal activities but was an avid sports fan and member of the University of Washington's Tyee Club for more than 30 years. He was an avid reader, active historian, and his interests also included an involvement in local, regional and national politics. He was a special, rare man that will not be forgotten. Lile is survived by his wife, Estelle Lile; two daughters, Barbara Lile-Duzsik and Diane DeAutremont, son-in-law Dan DeAutremont; two grandchildren, Luanne DeAutremont and Jacob Lile-Duzsik; two stepchildren, Danielle Brown and Moe Brown; and eight brothers and sisters.
