Steven Arthur AHLF
July 15, 1937 - June 1, 2001.
Born in Inglewood, California, Steve lived and worked in Hawaii and throughout the United States and World. Steve ran fishing boats and fished on the Grand Banks, in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and California as well as in South America, Mexico and Sweden. He was also in construction building bridges and roads in the Middle East, Guam, New Zealand, Canada and Alaska. Steve ran a factory in Puerto Rico and operated naval research vessel in the Caribbean. At 6'6" Steve was a big man and his physique was matched by his great generosity, intelligence, humor and good nature. Steve loved his life, his wife and daughter, and many great friends. Steve was a member of the Ballard Aerie 172 FOE. Steve died suddenly of a heart attack and will be sorely missed. preceded in death by his parents, Steve is survived by his loving wife, Kathy and daughter Rhue. Elmer L. 'Al' ALVERTS
Age 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior June 3, 2001 in Seattle, WA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence in 1983. Survived by his loving wife, Marian of Seattle; beloved father of Robert L. (Sharon) Alverts of Tigard, OR, Dan iel C. (Gwen) Alverts of Grapeview, WA, Richard A.Carol) Sundholm of Seattle, James V. (Carol) Sundholm of Minneapolis, MN and Jean L. (Tom) Mohrweis of Seattle. Grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of 8. Al was employed by Standard Oil of California for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He was very active with B.S.A., having been Scout Master of Troop 374 in Seattle, and was a longtime member of the Salvation Army. Memorial Service 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9th at Salvation Army Seattle Temple Corps, 9501 Greenwood Avenue N. in Seattle. Allan Waldimir ANAKA
Born 5-30-1927 in Regina, Sask., Canada. Died 5-12-2001 in Yuma, Arizona. A kind and generous man who enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He had a great sense of humor and a strong work ethic. He always hoped for and gave his best. He valued highly time spent with family and friends. "In our hearts will we hold your memory." Survived by his children: Jim and Gayle Trovesi, David and Doni Anaka, Ross and Connie Anaka, D'Arcy and Mike Dilger; their mother, Ruth Herbst; and his sister Lorraine Dobsky; six grandchildren: Jennifer, Dustin, Laura, David, James and Allison; and great-grandchild Kelsie. Longtime friend and companion Phyllis Bateman; her children: Judy Gould, Jack Bateman, Pam Samuelson, Penny Brown and Connie Oen and 10 grandchildren. Andrew Raymond "Ray" ANDERSON
Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer (Retired), age 96, of Bothell, Washington, passed on May 31, 2001. Born on April 29, 1905 at Evergreen Hospital in Seattle to Swedish immigrant parents, Carl and Mamie Anderson, he lived his early years in several homes in Ballard and Seattle. He never forgot as a child watching from his home nearby as Bill Boeing flew the mail route in his small seaplane from his shed on Lake Union, having Mr. Nordstrom fit his shoes and seeing one of his home sites on Denny Hill being sluiced into Elliot Bay. At age 10, he and his parents moved to his family's home stead quarter-section north of Bothell, which he called "home" for the rest of his life. His career years were spent in the Coast Guard stationed from California to Alaska, also serving in the North and South Pacific theaters during World War II. He and his wife spent 10 joyous retire ment years serving at Young Life's camp, Malibu, in Canada. His life was centered in a deep and abiding faith in his Lord that expressed it self in gentleness and love for everyone he met. What a welcoming he has received in heaven! Survivors: His loving wife, Marjorie Anderson, daughter, Merilyn Cooke (John), grandchildren, Debra Barnes (Randal), Jay Cooke (Alexa), Merry Nofziger (Jon) and Cindy Clinton (Craig) and 14 great grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Velma F. ANDERSON
Velma F. ANDERSON 89, of West Seattle, died June 1st. She was a fabulous cook and worked around her family's schedule as a cook at various locations. In 1968 her husband died and she returned to work as a cook for the phone company, retiring in 1977. She was a longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church until moving to Vashon Island in 1989. She joined Vashon Island Presbyterian Church and loved living on the Island. For health reasons she returned to West Seattle 2 years ago. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Gonzales of West Seattle; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Rena Kampen, and Helen Johnson; and brother, Darvin Cox. A Graveside Service will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at Washington Memorial Park. Memorials may be given to the Billy Graham Crusade. Arrangements by Howden-Kennedy Funeral Home. Isamu "Ish" AOKI
Isamu "Ish" AOKI, Age 84, died peacefully at home on Monday, June 4. He is survived by Rubi, his loving wife of 59 years, and three daughters, "Jenny" Jenifer Nakamura of Tukwila, Carolyn Aoki-Lale (hus band, Gean) of Carnation and Susie Aoki of Ketchikan. There are two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also a sister, Hatsue Setsuda. Ish was a life member of the Nisei Veterans Committee and the Seattle Japanese Gardeners Association. Robert (Bob) L. BAMMERT
Robert (Bob) L. BAMMERT, Age 79, passed away June 1, 2001 in Seattle at Providence Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Seattle November 26, 1921, the son of Dr. George and Nell Bammert. He was preceded in death by sisters Harriet, Margaret, Helen and Barbara, and brothers John and James. He is survived by sister Katie, and brothers Dick and Tom, many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. He was the crew cut, Buick-driving Santa Claus to many. A Vigil Service will be held at Bleitz Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 5, 2001 at 7 p.m., and a Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 6 at 8:15 a.m. at St. James Cathedral. Arthur Quentin BANKS
September 29, 1922 - May 20, 2001
Arthur Quentin Banks was born in Manor, Texas to Dennis David Banks and Ella Eloise Banks. After spending brief amounts of his early childhood in Idaho and Utah, he and his parents settled in Walla Walla, Washington, where he attended elementary school and high school. Upon graduation from the latter, he enrolled in the pre-med curriculum at the University of Washington; however, his education was interrupted by his service in the Army during the Second World War. During the war, he saw active combat in the Pacific theater and attained the rank of Sergeant Major. After his discharge, he resumed his studies at the University of Washington, and was awarded both a B.A. and an M.A. in Economics. In 1947, he married
Mary Elizabeth Morgan, and later fathered a daughter, Toni Elaine. The couple separated in 1955 when he, having converted to the Bahai faith, elected to serve as a missionary in Monrovia, Liberia. He worked as a missionary in Monrovia for twelve years, during which time he was also employed as an economist for the Free Port of Liberia. Upon his return to the United States, he assumed various managerial positions with several non-profit agencies, ending as the Executive Director for the Randolph-Carter Industrial Workshop. During this period, he also terminated his first marriage and married
the former Pauline Julia Johnson. That marriage subsequently ended in divorce. After leaving Randolph-Carter, he continued to serve as an independent consultant for numerous small businesses, but devoted the majority of his time to his true passions: the reading and writing of books. Albert Joseph BELMONT
Albert Joseph Belmont, 81, passed away Tuesday June 5, 2001 at the family home in San Mateo, California after battling cancer for the last several months. Born April 10, 1920 in Raymond, Washington, he was the sixth child of Frank and Mary Carmela Belmont. Albert and his family lived in Raymond where he worked as a service station owner and car dealer until the late 1950's. He formed a painting and building company in Seattle where he and his family resided for many years. Retiring as a contractor in the late 1980's, Albert and his wife moved to California where they were apartment complex managers for the last twelve years. Honored last year by the Washington State Senate, he was a member of the famed Valley High School 1936 Championship basketball team. He loved all sports, working on cars, and above all else, his family. He was a member of many clubs and associations and was a Merchant Marine during World War II. He also was a local race car driver and never lost his passion for the sport. Albert is survived by his loving wife Charlotte; five sons: Terry, Thomas, Timothy, Craig, and Jeff, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Louise Severide, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and six siblings (Mike Belmont, Frank Belmont, Esther Shaffer, Ida Cahill, Martha Sheary, and Josephine Koski). Cremation was in San Mateo where a small memorial service was held at the family home. Another celebration of Albert's life will be held in Seattle and he will be laid to rest in Eastern Washington. Age 72, born October 21, 1928 in Seattle, WA. passed away peacefully at home on June 2, 2001. Survived by her husband William; son Robert, daughter Bonnie, daughter Nancy and her husband Joe; and grandchildren: Nicole, Joshua and William.
