Juanita Fisher GRAHAM
1897 - 2001
Juanita Fisher Graham, who was 103 years of age at the time of her death, was the widow of Donald G. Graham, Seattle attorney, and daughter of the late O. D. Fisher, pioneer Northwest industrialist. She had a leadership role in numerous civic and philanthropic organizations. She served as a Trustee of Children's Orthopedic Hospital, Chairman of its Junior Guilds, Chairman of its Convalescent Home and Manager of its Corner Cupboard gift shop. She also served as Trustee and Sales Chairman of the Lighthouse for the Blind, leading broom manufacturer employing those with impaired vision, and was first President of The Seattle Milk Fund's Contributing Circle No. 1. Juanita Graham carried on active roles in the Seattle Junior League. A fund raising activity she originated was the Bottle Works. She and other volunteers would collect cast-off bottles from businesses and homes, clean and sort them by type and size and sell them back to businesses. These were the Depression years of the 1930s, and while the funds raised may have been modest by today's standards, they helped finance important community work of the Junior League. She was active in the Washington Park Arboretum and the Arboretum Foundation, of which her late husband was a co-founder. She organized the auxiliary units system of the Foundation, served as Trustee and Membership Chairman of the Arboretum Foundation and, at age 87, was co-chairman of its 50th anniversary fund raising drive. Juanita Graham shared her husband's interest in flowers and the maintenance of the gardens at their home. Because of their love of rhododendrons, of which there were more than 500 varieties in their garden, they helped organize the American Rhododendron Society. In 1943 a new hybrid rhododendron was named, in her honor, Mrs. Donald Graham. In 1986, at the age of 89 years, Lakeside/St. Nicholas School gave Juanita Graham its Distinguished Alumni Award In part, the award stated: Of her interest in community affairs, Juanita says, "It's hard to say no. If someone arouses my enthusiasm...I'm vulnerable. I still get enthusiastic." Perhaps this enthusiasm stems from one of her favorite quotes from the twelfth chapter of St. Luke: 'To whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required.' To Juanita much was given; her giving in turn has reached full circle. We are privileged to recognize this remarkable human being who has gained such distinction as to bring honor to herself and to her school. Juanita Graham is survived by two sons: Richard F. Graham of Medina and Donald G. Graham, Jr. of Seattle; three grandchildren: Sharon Graham Bingham, Donald Graham III and Frederick Anhalt Graham; six great-grandchildren: Christopher Bingham, Scott Bingham, Darlene Graham, Felecia Graham II, Juanita Graham II and Frederick Graham, Jr.; and one great-grandchild: Race Bingham. There will be a private Memorial Service. The family suggests that remembrances be sent to The Arboretum Foundation, 2300 Arboretum Dr. E., Seattle; The Junior League of Seattle, 4119 E. Madison, Seattle; Lakeside/St. Nicholas School, 14050 - 1st N.E., Seattle. Arrangements by Bonney-Watson Capitol Hill (Obit is from 06/01/2001 to 06/04/2001.)
