Col. Jack W. HAYES USAF, Ret. 'wgfplahnnito'
Jack W. Hayes was a veteran fighter pilot of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He was one of the youngest men promoted to Colonel and was one of the first to shoot down a jet airplane in a prop fighter during W.W.II. During his military career he was the base commander of two Air Force bases. He was a pilot instructor at Boeing Field for many years and owned and flew an aerobatic airplane painted like the Thunderbirds. He taught aerobatics and performed in many air shows. He left flying with over 42, 000 air hours. His colorful career is skillfully told in his autobiography 'Three Wars...' He was a man of courage, love, and humor. He is survived by his wife Margee, his three sons, Timothy, Patrick and Steven. He passed away peacefully in his home Friday, June 1, 2001. He was 82. Winton James HAZELTON
Died Tuesday, June 5th in Tacoma, Washington at the age of 71. He was born on January 31st, 1930 in Jamestown, North Dakota. He was a great father and will be missed by many. Winton served his country in the Korean War, where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was with the Heavy Mortar Batallion 461st infantry Regiment, and served as Chief Computer for the Fire Direction Center. He was awarded the commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendant for meritorious service. Winton was active in Model Railroading with the Mt. Rainier N. Scale Club and had a great love for trains all his life. Winton was a member of Eagles Aerie #3, Tacoma Elks BPOE #174 and Ray C. Roberts VFW Post #969. He was self-employed during most of his life in the construction trade and was a master craftsman specializing in cabinetwork and clock making. His wife Carol preceded Winton in death in 1987. He is survived by a daughter, Kim Jacobs (husband Max) from Richland, Washington, two sons, Gary Hazelton of Bemidji, Minnesota (wife Diane), Ken Hazelton (wife Cindy) of Gig Harbor, Washington, and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by a very special friend, Diane Powell of Lake Wood, Washington. Our family wishes to express a deep thank you to Diane for her friendship, Love of Winton and around the clock sacrificial care during his prolonged illness. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 9th, Celebration of Life Center, Mt. View Memorial Park, 4100 Steilcoom Blvd. in Lakewood, Washington. (Obit dated 06/06/2001.)
Frances HERMAN
Died June 4, 2001. Mrs. Herman was born 1903 in Nikolayev, Russia, the youngest child of William and Hannah Oseran. She was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and spent her adult life in Los Angeles and in Seattle. She was preceded in death by her husband Sol, her sisters Olga and Eva, and her brothers Alex, Max and Ben Oseran. She is survived by her niece Shirley Harris, nephews Mel, Lawrence and Henry Oseran and many grand nieces and nephews. Mrs. Herman was a long time member of Hadassah and actively involved with the Kline Galland Center where she lived for many years. Graveside Services at Herzl cemetery, Wednesday, June 6th, 12 noon. Born October 24, 1929 in Okanogan, WA., graduated from Vancouver High in 1948.
She passed away at her home in Buckley after a long illness.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Joe; sons Ronald and Alan; sister Roberta Pollock.

Clair (Stogie) HILL
Beloved husband and best friend to Sandy. Born June 2, 1924. passed away on May 26, 2001. Longtime Merchant Marine, Retired. Retired from Stevedoring Services of America after 30 years of service. He was an 11-year member of Starr Sutherland Post # 227. Survived by his children Pam Anderson and husband Gerald, Christopher Hill and wife Jennifer, Larry Gilseth and wife Debbie, David Gilseth, Roberta Snell, Sharon Coup, Ron Waara and wife Linda, 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Nancye J. HOLT
Died at age 67 on May 24, 2001. She courageously fought lung cancer for 9 months, but died peacefully at her home on Bainbridge Island, Washington. She was born on February 20, 1934, in Parsons, Kansas to Nancye Lucille and Crayton E. Turner, Sr. She was raised in Seattle and attended Lincoln High School. She also attended the University of Washington and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Sorority. In 1961, she and her husband Bob and children moved to Bainbridge Island. There, she truly gave her life to caring for those loved ones around her. She will always be remembered by her smile and perseverance. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob. She is survived by her brothers Crayton Turner of Bainbridge Island, Sherrod Turner of Long Beach, California, and Bill Turner of Mercer Island; daughters Linda (Philip) Madden and Vicki (Mark) Golden; sons Mike (Sally) Holt and Tim (Kerry) Holt; and eight grandchildren. Jimmy L. HOPKINS
1956 - 2001
Born July 19, 1956, died of a heart attack May 30, 2001 at the age of 44 at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way. His father, Calvin C. Hopkins, precedes Hopkins in death. He is survived by two children, Jimmy II and Jynelle of Tacoma, Washington; mother, Barbara J. Hopkins of Anchorage, Alaska; brother S. Michael Hopkins of New Orleans, Louisiana; sisters Calvinara Christenbury of Anchorage, Alaska and Barbara A. Hopkins-Cox of Sicily, Italy; grandmother Mable Harris of Jackson, Mississippi; two nieces Carma Christenbury and Darby Cox; one nephew, Alan Cox and a host of relatives, friends and acquaintances. Medically retired from U.S. Army in 1991, he served 17 years before being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Hopkins had leadership roles ranging from Infantryman to Personnel Senior Sergeant, overseas and within United States and was decorated with numerous service medals. He continued leadership performance in the civilian arena as an employee with Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) in Auburn, Washington in several positions, as well as volunteer positions with Paralyzed Veteran's of America (PVA) Seattle Northwest Chapter, as the Sports Director and a member on the Board of Directors. Further, Hopkins was actively involved with Seattle-Tacoma School Districts as a spokesperson ensuring compliance with the U.S. American Disabilities Act. Hopkins had a lust for life and for helping others. He is befriended, loved and remembered. F. Trafford "Traff" HUBERT
F. Trafford "Traff" HUBERT, 74, the last surviving member of the Cecil Young Quartet, died May 24, 2001, after a long, brave battle with cancer. Over the years Traff lived on the road as a jazz musician, played gigs at Birdland and the Blue Note, worked in record sales and promotion, performed in Egypt and China, hosted "Traff's Trip" on KRAB and KXA, and lent his solid bass playing and creative vocals to dozens of local bands. He enjoyed working with the NSCC jazz students. Earshot Jazz and the Museum of History and Industry honored Traff as a jazz pioneer, and he was one of the artists featured in the book, Jackson Street After Hours. He was a lifetime member of Musician's Union Local 76-493. For the past 19 years Traff was actively clean and sober. Traff was preceded in death by his son Tad and ex-wife Julie. He is survived by daughters Lynn Chapman, Bainbridge, and Lisa Rowland, Poulsbo; granddaughters, Janis, Justine, Naomi, Heidi, and Amber; great-granddaughter, Hannah; ex-wife, Rita; and many, many friends. Traff's music, humor, stories, and friendship will be sorely missed. Remembrances may be made in Traff's name to KPLU or KUOW. Lynn and her family thank Eleanor and Swedish Hospice for their support and care. Jane Pyatt HUTCHINS
Born Jane Woodward, 4/26/1921, LaMonte, MO., died May 25, 2001. She graduated 1938 in Coffeyville, Kansas. She lived and worked for many years in Richland, WA. for both the Hanford Project and the Richland Villager newspaper as Business Manager. From 1956 to 1972, she was Office Manager for the Seattle office of Sunset magazine. In 1973 she moved to Yakima, WA. when she married
Merrill K. Hutchins. She was a member of Laureate Chi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, Chairman of the Yakima Valley Museum Quilters, and the Yaki-Minis miniature club. She was an excellent and avid cross-stitcher and craftswoman. She was preceded in death by husbands, George O. Pyatt and Merrill K. Hutchins and by her sister Virginia. Survivors include her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Bob Harrison of Seattle, her brother Charles B. Woodward and wife Eleanor of Vancouver, WA., two granddaughters, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A private family gathering will follow interment at Evergreen-Washelli in Seattle. Memorial gifts may be made to the Yakima Valley Museum, 2105 Tieton Drive, Yakima, WA. 98902.
