Mel OSERAN
Mel combined the best qualities of intelligence, hard work and sensitivity in the practice of law and in his life as a whole. His intelligence was demonstrated early when he graduated from Garfield High School in 1935 as the valedictorian of his class, even though, because of skipping grades, he was much younger than his classmates. He entered the University of Washington at the age of 15 and, in 1939, Mel received his Bachelor's Degree, Magna Cum Laude and was admitted as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Mel was also a Jewish scholar, studying the Talmud, on a daily basis, until his second year in law school. Following graduation from the University of Washington Law School in 1942, he attended special classes for the U.S. Army and, while doing so, taught business law and labor law classes at the request of the University of Washington Business Department. His hard work was evident not only in his scholastic achievements, but also, while in the U.S. Army, serving in the South Pacific. Part of that time in the Army, he was stationed at the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur during World War II. He achieved the rank of Captain. Mel practiced law in the Seattle area for almost 50 years. His reputation as a lawyer was unsurpassed. He was well respected not only by his partners and clients, but also by attorneys who opposed him and by judges who heard his cases. Mel's initial area of expertise was in workers' compensation, representing workers in their efforts to obtain compensation for work-related injuries. His workers' compensation practice was primarily with the law firm of Walthew, Oseran, Warner & Keefe (1950-1957) followed by a more general practice with Robbins, Oseran & Robbins (1957-1968). Along with his long-time partner, Jerry Hahn, he formed the law firm of Oseran & Hahn in Kent in 1968, for the general practice of law, located at Heath Tecna Corporation, which firm moved to Bellevue in 1971 as Oseran, Hahn & Kelley and currently operates, under the name of Oseran Hahn Spring & Watts, P.S. In his practice, Mel used his superior intellect, but also believed strongly in finding ways to solve problems, the timely handling of clients' legal matters, prompt, thorough communications with clients, and meticulous and grammatically correct presentations, whether in letters or in court pleadings. Mel treated his clients with the utmost respect. He realized that any matter a client had with a lawyer was important to that client, even if, to a third party, a particular might seem trivial. Mel's sensitivity was evidenced by his deep involvement in many community projects. He was president of The Anti-defamation League (Northwest Branch); the B'nai B'rith, Seattle Lodge; the B'nai B'rith Jewish Cultural Foundation; Seattle Jewish Federation; the Hillel Organization at the University of Washington; Jewish Family Services and Temple de Hirsch Sinai. He was a member of the board of directors of many organizations including the Seattle Urban League, the University of Washington Law School Foundation, Jewish Day School, and the Kline Galland Home. Mel was extremely active in fighting discriminatory practices. While serving with the ADL, he participated in obtaining from the State Legislature passage of a law ("The Washington State Public Accommodations Act") prohibiting discrimination in all public accommodations. The most important aspect of his life was his family. Mel was devoted to his wife Sylvia Shafer Oseran, to whom he was married
almost 49 years. He was also devoted to his daughter, Laura Miller (Brad) and his son, Joel Oseran (Gail). He was fascinated with his six grand children, Michael, Cora and Sam Miller and Zachary, Jarrett and Lindsay Oseran. Mel is also survived by his sister, Shirley Harris (Ben), sisters-in-law Elise Topp and Harriet Katz and numerous nieces, nephews and cou sins. Private family services are being held. Remembrances can be sent to The Caroline Kline Galland Home. (Obit dated 06/08/2001.)
