George Thomas LESLIE, Jr.
passed away May 4, 2001 in Globe, Arizona from a sudden heart attack. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania June 30, 1930. preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary E. and George T. Leslie, Jr., sister Nancy Phillips and brother Ronald Leslie all of Pennsylvania. George graduated from Turtle Creek High School in 1948. At the advent of the Korean Conflict, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and after training in electronics he was sent to the Pacific Northwest. Following a period of sea duty he transferred to the Coast Guard Air Station at Port Angeles. After discharge he decided to go back to school. He returned to the Los Angeles area. One semester at a local community college was enough. He returned to the Pacific Northwest he had come to love. He enrolled in the University of Washington during which time he met and married
Judith DeRousie of Port Angeles. He completed his undergraduate education from Western Washington University in Bellingham and went to Port Angeles to teach for 11 years. He spent summers as a seasonal Park Ranger in Olympic National Park. Having completed graduate and post graduate studies from the University of Washington he moved to Tacoma in 1969 where he was a faculty member and Director of Library and Information Services at Fort Steilacoom Community College/Pierce College. He retired in 1991. George became a Master Mason in 1954 when he was raised in Port Angeles Lodge No. 69. In 1971 he affiliated with Steilacoom Lodge No. 2 and served as Worshipful Master in 1976. He was Worshipful of Mt. Tahoma Lodge No. 190 in 1984. He was a member of Walter F. Meier Lodge of Research No. 281 and Twin Peaks No. 32 in Midvale Utah. He was elected Junior Grand Warden in 1989 and served as Grand Master of Masons in Washington 1992-1993. He was an affiliated Past Grand Master of Utah. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies of Tacoma, the Valley of Tacoma Scottish Rite, he was Director of the Scottish Rite Foundation for the Valley of Tacoma. He was a member of Afifi Temple of the Shrine and served as Chaplain in 1994. He served as Secretary of Pacific Council No. 30, Allied Masonic Degrees, a member of Royal Ark Mariners and the Royal Order of Turtle Creek, PA. and was DeMolay Dad at Sequim and Port Angeles Chapters. He served a number of years on the Grand Executive Board of Washington and Idaho International Order of the Rainbow for Girls as Business Manager of the Confidential Observer and was Rainbow Dad for Acacia Assembly No. 154 in Steilacoom. He was also a member of Cedar Chapter No. 173 Order of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed reading, good music, working with wood, lost wax silver and fishing and was an Amateur radio buff. George is survived by his wife Judith of Mesa, Arizona; daughter, Kelly B. Mecifi of University Place, Washington; granddaughter, Malika A. Mecifi and grandson, Zackary T. Mecifi also of University Place; sister Wilma Jean Chambers of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. George's wishes were there be no formal services. Gary Kenneth LIGHT
Born September 14 1956, in Tacoma Washington, passed away June 20th, in Auburn. Graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma and WSU. Loving husband of Robin and father of three children Megan, Lindsy and Garrett. Especially fond of family gatherings at Hood Canal. Survived by parents Ken and Jane Light, and sisters Martha Flemming, and Joan Lesh. Also survived by numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Memorial services will be held Saturday June 23rd at 11 a.m. at Auburn First United Methodist Church on the corner of Main and N. streets. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to "The Gary Light Childrens' Memorial Fund", in care of Auburn First United Methodist Church 100 N. Street S.E., Auburn, WA 98002. Louie Y. T. LIU
Born in Ningpo, China on October 30, 1924. Died on June 20, 2001. He came to the U.S. in September of 1948 to attend Oregon State University to study pulp and paper chemistry. There he met his future wife, Sang Won Liu in a chemistry class. He is survived by his wife and 4 children, Gloria Liu, Los Angeles; David Liu, Chicago; Daniel Liu and Patty McKenna, both Los Angeles. Also 8 grandchildren and 4 brothers in China. Louis was employed for 30 years by Weyerhaeuser Company as a chemical engineer. He moved to Federal Way in January of 1980. After his retirement in 1982 he was active in the Community Caregiving Network; Job Center; Habitat for Humanity; Federal Way Rotary; Kiwanis and Boy Scouts. He was also an active member of Steel Lake Presbyterian Church serving as a choir member, deacon and elder. Memorial Services will be Sunday, June 24, 2001, 3 p.m. at Steel Lake Presbyterian Church, 1829 South 308th St., Federal Way. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Federal Way Community Caregiving Network, C/O Jackie Freet, 129 S.W. 301st Pl., Federal Way, WA. 98023. Gong Douglas Lock, of Federal Way, was born June 5, 1949 in China to Mr. and Mrs. Ning F. Lock. He passed away June 14, 2001 at the age of 52. A devoted and loving husband, father, son and brother; he is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Kristine, Aaron and David; parents, Ning and Gook; brother, Gong S. Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 22nd at 10 a.m. at Butterworth-Manning-Ashmore, 300 E. Pine, Seattle. Interment

Rev. John J. MARX
Age 76, a Roman Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Anchorage in Alaska, went home to God Thursday, June 21st. Fr. Marx was born to Arthur Phillip and Eleanor McClellan Marx on June 14, 1925 in Tacoma, Washington. He joined five siblings. He was baptized, made his First Communion and was confirmed at St. Patrick's Parish in Tacoma, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated, Monday, June 25, 2001, at 11 a.m. Recitation of the Rosary will be Sunday, June 24th, at 7 p.m. at Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Chapel Fr. Marx attended the minor seminary of St. Edward's and graduated from O'Dea High School. He enlisted in the United States Army October 5, 1944 serving as a medical technician. In 1951 Fr. Marx graduated magna cum laude from Seattle University and began a career with the Internal Revenue Service in Alaska. At the invitation of Bishop Dermott O'Flanagan, while they were fishing together, Fr. Marx discerned that he wanted to return to his earlier vocation and begin fishing for souls. In January of 1955 Fr. Marx entered the Major seminary at Mt. Angel in Oregon. His ordination March 19, 1960 was officiated by Bishop Dermott O'Flanagan. He served communities in both the Archdiocese of Anchorage and the Diocese of Juneau. Retiring to Seattle in 1982, he resided many years with his sister, Joan Marx. He pursued his tremendous interest in reading and conversation with his many friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Marx, in 1925; mother, Eleanor, in 1972; and brother, Hugh, in 1977. He is survived by a brother, William H. (Florence) Marx of Seattle; three sisters, Mary E. (Herbert) Hood of San Francisco, Eleanor A. (Harry) Hall of Auburn, California and F. Joan Marx of Mercer Island; and sister-in-law, Marion Marx of Alpine, CA. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends also survive knowing that he has seen the glory of the God that he has shared homilies about for so many years. He was cared for over many years by a special nephew, Jim Hood, who like a son, was with him as he left this world for the presence of Our Lord. We will treasure his love and prayers for us always. Interment, Calvary cemetery, Tacoma. George J. MATUSKA
George J. MATUSKA, 87, died June 14, 2001 at his home in Edmonds surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 1, 1913 in Jackson, Minnesota. He and his family have been residents of Edmonds for 50 years. George was a well-known refrigeration and electrical contractor in South Snohomish County. He loved his family and enjoyed activities involving them. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy; his six children, John (Sonja) Matuska, Edmonds; Marlene Pletan, Renton; Mark (Gaylinn) Matuska, Lynnwood; Ann (Bob) Yeager, Edmonds; Jean (Donald) Manson, Black Diamond; and, Alice (John) Miller, Kent; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves sisters Lorie Rose Bean, Lucille Smith and brothers Bennie and Bill Matuska. George's life will be celebrated at a Funeral Mass, Monday, June 25, 2001, 11 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 630 - 7th Ave. N., Edmonds. Walter P. MEAD
Walter P. MEAD, 92, of Shoreline, passed away on June 18, 2001. He was born July 26, 1908 in Grand Junction, CO. He was a retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Walt was very much loved as "Grandpa" or "Gramps" by his grandchildren; Tony, Rhonda, Todd, Becky, Scott, Carrie, Sam, Steve, and his 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by son Walter P. (Margaret) Mead, Jr., and nephews Maurice Mead and Robert Kocher. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise, and children, Betty J. Waltier and Robert O. Mead. Of Enumclaw, WA., formerly from Seattle, passed away peacefully June 18, 2001. She was preceded by her husband Louie and is survived by her children, which include daughters: Janet Sanders, Shirlee Wilder, Susan Conley, Sharlene Torey, Claudette Mitzel, Colleen Gagnon and Joette Mitzel, and sons: Charles, Michael, Anthony and Robert. She also leaves sons-in-law: Al Sanders and Gary Gagnon and daughters-in-law: Sue Mitzel and Janet Mitzel; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and special friend Jerry Schroeder. As a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, she will be missed by many. She was born May 4, 1923 in Laverne, North Dakota and worked as a nursing assistant for many years until she retired. Services will be held at Yarington's Funeral Home, 10708 - 16th Ave. S.W., Seattle, Friday, June 22nd at 11 a.m. Visitation begins Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment
