Katherine Renee SCHMIDT
In Loving Memory of Kathy- -" unconditionally loving, kind and gentle soul." passed away peacefully on September 22, 2001, in Rome, Italy while on attendance at an international conference on reflexology. Kathy was born on July 17, 1951 in Smyrna, Tennessee and was the first child born of the marriage of Connie Massey and George Katsuyama (retired, 30 years, Air Force). Kathy came from a close and loving military family and had spent part of her childhood living in several countries including France and the Philippines. She had attended the University of Hawaii and San Die go State University as an Art History major. Kathy met her husband, Jim, in San Diego, CA, in 1978, at Christ Church Unity when both were working there as Sunday school teachers. Ka thy and Jim continued to serve the community as a team over the next 23 years, originally as Sunday school co-superintendents, later as co-directors of an innovative San Diego Pre-school (Wee Wisdom School), and ultimately, for the past 5 years, as Co-Directors and teachers at Bellevue Massage School. Kathy was a devoted mother to her two beloved children, Shannon and Nicholas, whom she cherished with all of her heart. Kathy was also an exceptional teach er, both as a Montessori instructor for young children as well as a teacher for adults in the complementary care and holistic health fields. In San Diego, she had taught the Touch For Health program to lay people and professionals, and during the past 7 years had taught hand and foot reflexology at 5 Western Washington community colleges. Kathy was the current Vice-President of the Washington Reflexology Association and a passionate advocate of reflexology as a profession to benefit the public. In her personal life, Kathy's family and friends knew her as a very humble, extremely kind and gentle person. Her uncle Barton remembered that she was "such a sweet, spiritual person." Most people who knew her remarked that in each of life's circumstances Kathy always recognized some positive lesson to be learned. Kathy was also a skilled peacemaker, helping people or factions that were at odds to come together. She was also a healer and very generous person. She would spend hours cooking special baked delights for friends and family and contributed many hours of complimentary reflexology sessions for all that felt they could benefit. Kathy enjoyed cooking, kayaking, travel and most importantly spending time with her children, family and friends. Kathy's brother, Byron said Kathy had been the anchor in his life; while her brother, Tommy said he had been so very proud of his sister when he went to Rome and heard numerous people speak of the many ways Kathy had touched so many people's hearts there. Kathy is survived by: her husband, James; daughter, Shannon; son, Nicholas; father, George Katsuyama and his wife, Jean; brother, Byron Katsuyama and his wife, Sueanne Seegers, and their child, Michael; brother Tom Katsuyama, his partner, Karen, and children, Jesse, Travis and Missy. Donald A. SCHULLER
Born August 29, 1917 in Mallard, Iowa, passed away September 27, 2001 in Maple Valley. Mr. Schuller served in the U.S. Navy from 1937-1957 receiving the Purple Heart Award, Pearl Har bor survivor and a member of the Fleet Re serve. Donald also had his own business as an electrician. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and farming. He is preceded in death by his son Donald Schuller Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Irene E. Schuller of Maple Valley, sons: Mark Schuller of Spokane, Michael Schuller of Seattle, Bill Schuller of Seattle, daughters: Patricia McFall of Maple Valley, Eileen Schuller of Everett, Mary Wycoff of Vashon, Theresa Schuller of Olympia and Lori Schuller of Seattle, brother Mark Schuller Jr. of Mallard, Iowa, sister Valeria Sauter of Varina, Iowa, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2001 at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church of Renton with Burial to follow at Tahoma National cemetery. "Jack" John Robert SELVAR
Age 65, was born February 21, 1936 on Bainbridge Island and died on Bainbridge Island September 26, 2001 after a short illness. He attended Bainbridge Island schools and after high school married
his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Callaham. He began fishing with his Dad on their boat, the Oceanus, when he was 10 years old and fished from Alaska to Mexico until the boat was sold. He served in the Army at Ft. Bliss, TX., drove the Al-Can for several years for Seattle trucking firms and worked for J.A. Parks on the development of Driftwood Key and Bellevue Junior College. He and his brother, Bill, owned and operated the Union 76 station in Winslow from 1960-1968. He then worked for Fred Hill Materials until his retirement in 1995. Jack was a veteran firefighter/EMT for the Bainbridge Island Fire Department, a member of the Renton Masonic Lodge, Bainbridge Island and support volunteer at the Hansville Fire Dept. He and his wife, Dorothy enjoyed many years traveling in their motor home, visiting many sites from Alaska to Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawaii and spent several winters in Mexico, Palm Springs, and Arizona. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; infant son, Ronald; brother, Bill Selvar and parents, Dagny Selvar and Haakon Selvar. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, Driftwood Key; his children, Jan Selvar, Cheryl Selvar and Donald Selvar all of Seattle; his sister Pat Wry, Sequim; brother, Warren, Bainbridge Island; granddaughter, Alicia; stepchildren, Stephen Spickler, Fallon, NV., Angela Spickler, San Diego; M. Alex Spickler, Sacramento, CA. and Paula Turner, Sacramento, CA., and seven step grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jack will be missed by many lifelong friends and everyone who knew him. Remembrances in Jack's name should be sent to the Bainbridge Island Fire Department, 8895 Madison Avenue, Bainbridge Island, WA. 98110. Royce L. SHOEMAKER
Born on May 20th 1932 and died at the age of 69, on Sept. 27th 2001 at Stevens Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. He was preceded in death by his parents Clifford and Edna Shoemaker and son Robert. He is survived by his wife JoAnne and his sons Richard and James, stepdaughter Christine Barnes, stepson Daniel Mitchell, grand daughters Leah and Jenna Shoemaker, Kelsi Colombi, Chloe Barnes, in-laws Otto and Elma Hansen, and his sisters Arla Stanley and Zita Rowley. He was born in Waubay S. Dakota, lived in Tacoma and Seattle, and 5 years ago moved to Edmonds, WA. He had a long and impressive career as a union Glazier, in 1973 he started his own company Royco Glass and Aluminum. His interests were Pizza, Beer and W.W.F. Wrestling. Remembrances can be made to the Leukemia Society or charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at his home Monday, Oct. 1, 2001 at 1 p.m. (Obit dated 09/30/2001.)
Angeline "Angie" SLIGHTAM
Died at the age of 80. She was a very loving mother encouraging all her sons to reach their full potential. Survived by son Rob, son John, son Mike, daughter-in-law Misty and numerous nieces and nephews, all who love her very deeply. Richard P. SMITH
Born December 7, 1937 in Seattle, Washington. Richard passed away Monday, October 1, 2001. His passing was peaceful. Richard graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1956. He then served in the U.S. Navy on board the submarine U.S.S. Menhaden (SS377). In 1962 Richard began working for his mother and father at the Five Point Cafe located by the Chief Seattle statue at 5th & Denny and at the Mecca Cafe on lower Queen Anne Ave. These two establishments are the oldest family owned restaurants in Seattle. They were begun by Richard's father in 1929, purchased by Richard in 1975, and declared as one of the "top 10" places to eat by Harper's Bazaar. Richard was a member of the Queen City Yacht Club since 1971 where he kept "COBY" even living on board for a number of years while he re stored the vessel to it's well known appearance today. He was an avid scuba diver, an active participant in the "Mud Sharks". Richard was a passionate advocate of Seattle and his local communities around the Five Point and Mecca Restaurants. He established a playground in the Denny Regrade for children living within the confines of the city. During his life Dick established the Francis T. Miller Organ Transplant Foundation. Richard is survived by his devoted and loving wife Darlene, his stepdaughter Tracy, daughter Maryanne and son Preston. Followed by police escort to Evergreen-Washelli cemetery at 11111 Aurora Avenue North for Burial, and with a reception fol lowing at the Mecca Saloon & Cafe, 526 Queen Anne Ave. N. Born Florence Mary Lewis on July 31, 1924 in Lymm, Cheshire, England, Mary, aged 77, passed away on September 28, 2001 in Stanwood, WA. She was one of two children. Mary is survived by her children, Gwynneth Sutherland of Edgewood, WA; John Snowball of Hamburg, Germany; three grandchildren, Austin, Amanda and Kieren, and great grandchild, Graelon. She married
Jack Snowball in 1945 and they both emigrated from England in 1978 to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. They lived in the Burien area where, following Jack's death in 1981 Mary went to work for the Educational Services District in Des Moines until her retirement in 1993. In 1999 Mary moved to The Warm Beach Senior Community in Stanwood. She belonged to various churches and organizations throughout her life, most recently, the Burien Free Methodist Church, Daughters of the British Empire, Sunnydale Garden Club and the Munro Manor Social Club and was especially active in volunteer services at Warm Beach. This Christian community has been a source of great strength and comfort to Mary and became more so during her yearlong battle with cancer. Her family thanks all the wonderful residents and staff for their sincere caring and support. Viewing will be at The Forest Lawn Funeral Home in West Seattle on Thursday, October 4, 2001 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Memorial Service will be held at Burien Free Methodist Church on Friday, October 5, at 2 p.m.; interment will follow at Riverton Crest cemetery. A further Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at the Beachwood facility in the Warm Beach Senior Community. In lieu of flowers bequests can be made to the Cancer Society, Medic One or a charity of your choice.
