Rose Mary C. WAGONER

When the Roman matron Cornelia, mother of the soon-to-be famous Gracchi brothers, was scorned for her simple lifestyle and her lack of jewels, she put her arms around her children and said, "These are my jewels." To Rose Mary Wagoner, her eight children were her jewels, and to us, she was a pearl of great price. A true child of the Depression, she was a proud graduate of Roosevelt High School and later graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington. During her years on campus she was a loyal member of the Newman Club and the Young Ladies Institute. Later, she earned her masters in Classics, and maintained a lifelong involvement with the scholars of the University of Washington Classics Department. We children grew up hearing lines of Vergil, Shakespeare, and Yeats, spouting as naturally from her lips as others hear. "Wash your hands and eat your supper." We thought everyone knew that an ungrateful child was "sharper than a serpent's tooth." She embedded in us a love for our Irish heritage and the richness of the English language. Widowed at an early age and left with eight children, Rose Mary went back to school at the U. of W., updated her teaching certificate, and became a much loved teacher of Latin, English, and World History at Holy Angels High School. Later, she taught for many years at Kennedy High School, inspired by the leadership of Principal John Goodwin. During these busy years, she coached debate and introduced her students to the Junior Classical League, and eventually became State Chairman of that organization. Also active in the American Classical League, she published articles in the Classical Journal and became National Secretary of that prestigious organization. Rose Mary loved involving her students with the classics (many a Roman banquet she did plan), and left a rich legacy, not only for the young people she taught, but for her children and grandchildren as well. Two more generations of teachers have followed her lead, and thousands of students in Washington State have been affected in some way by her love of literature, classic mythology, and the English language. When she retired from teaching, she resumed classes at the University of Washington, studying for the delight of it. She filled her Irish thirst for learning with classes in English literature, Greek and Roman classics, and Medieval studies. So great was her expertise, that professors asked her to translate obscure texts of Medieval Latin. She considered this task a privilege and was proud to do it. She traveled extensively in England and her beloved Ireland and studied at both Oxford and Cambridge. preceded in death by her husband Buster in 1961, Rose Mary successfully raised eight children: Rose Mary (Hagevig), John, Margaret (Garrison), Catherine (Nance), Helen (Knox), Cecilia, Barbara (Jones) and Dorothy (Parsons). She gave thanks for fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Helen McNerney. As Rose Mary Dwyer, she was a charter member of St. Catherine's Church in Seattle, and she lived in that parish all of her life. She gave unstintingly of her time as a volunteer to the church as a member of the Altar Society, Eucharistic Minister, and as a reader at Mass. She was President of both St. Catherine's Mothers' Club and the Blanchet Mothers' Club where she worked hard to raise funds to buy books for the Blanchet library. Rose Mary gave her children the drive to succeed and was happiest when they were top sellers of The World's Finest Chocolate, good students, and busily involved in the wonderful Blanchet musicals directed by Dr. Maury Sheridan. As far as she was concerned, no sacrifice was too great in support of Catholic education. During her last two years, Rose Mary resided at The Hearthstone at Green Lake, not far from where she grew up as a girl. Her children thank all the nurses and caregivers for the loving quality of the service she received there. Joseph Campbell, the great mythologist once said: "To be a hero means no more and no less that to be human and willing to work at it." To all who knew, Rose Mary Wagoner was a hero in the truest sense of the word, and the circle of her hero's path has led her back to the Alpha and Omega of her faith. Her place in heaven has been prepared; she can sing her beloved Latin hymns with the angels. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Rose Mary Wagoner Scholarship Fund at St. Catherine's School, 8524 8th Ave. N.E., Seattle, WA. 98115. Recitation of the Rosary will be Monday, October 1, 2001, 7 p.m. at Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Chapel Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at 9 a.m. at St. Catherine Church. Interment, Holyrood cemetery. (Obit dated 10/01/2001.)
