Bernard DICKSON
November 22, 1911 - November 1, 2001

Native son of Tacoma and patriarch of the Pacific Northwest Dickson family, Bernie's great heart stopped beating just shy of his 90th birthday on Thursday, November 1 at 5:39 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma. Born November 22, 1911 to Frank and Ethel Dickson, Bernie lived in Tacoma until the family moved to the wilds of Montana for several years to run a cattle ranch. Returning to Tacoma, he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1929 and went on to the University of Washington in Seattle, dividing his summers between fishing and logging in Alaska and coaching swimming at the YMCA for next semester's tuition. It was around this time he met the love of his life, Violet Louise Johnson, also of Tacoma, and they were married on June 11, 1938. Joining the U.S. Navy at the outbreak of World War II, he went to work teaching naval recruits how to swim. Following the war he crisscrossed the country seeking re-enlistments, and was later transferred to St. John's, Newfoundland where he served in the mid-1950s as Commander of Naval Resupply Operations for U.S. bases in the Arctic. Bernie was then assigned to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. where he served until retiring from the Navy as Commander in 1963. Moving the family to California, Bernie spent the next seven years at the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, where he officially retired in 1970. He and Louise returned to the Northwest and Gig Harbor in 1989. Bernie's attributes and talents were many - devoted husband and father; a love of swimming and sports; a remarkable memory and broad knowledge of history and events that made every conversation engaging; a wonderful host and legendary bartender; a gracious, unassuming combination of wit, warmth and wisdom that made everyone feel at ease. But perhaps the singlemost defining attribute of Bernie's character was his passion for music in general and of opera in particular. This world is a poorer place with his passing and he will be dearly missed. Bernie was preceded in death by his brothers Edgar and Gregory and his sister Geraldine. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Louise; his four proud sons Alan, Patrick, Ron and Gordon; grandchildren Sean, Erika, Shona, Kevin, Andrew, Nicole, and Mary; and great-grandchildren Ian and Nicole. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 23 at the Pagoda Room in Point Defiance Park, 5400 N. Pearl, Tacoma, WA. (253-759-6087) In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Bernard Dickson's name to the Tacoma Opera Association Student Understudy Fund, c/o Rod Gideons, 705 S. 9th St., Suite 303, Tacoma, WA. 98405. (Obit dated 11/11/2001.)
