(Mary) Louise HAY

Born Mary Louise Bowser on June 30, 1923, in South Bend, Indiana. Died November 7th, 2001 in Bellevue, Washington. preceded in death by her mother, Clara, her husband, Mills, and her older sister, Betty June. Survived by children, Joan, Bill and David, her seven grandchildren, Kevin, Megan, Carly, Robert, Tyler, Adam and Wyatt, two great grandchildren, Nichole and Anabella, as well as her younger sister, Barbara, and her nieces Barbara Walters and Margaret Lukowski, daughters-in-law Pam and Mindy Hay and son-in-law, Michael Frey. Louise's early years were not easy. The Great Depression slammed South Bend and, at age 6, Louise's father abandoned the family. Her mother was forced to place Louise and Betty June in a Catholic orphanage where they lived for several years. While this was a very difficult experience, it also instilled in Louise a strong belief in God and also a powerful desire to create the perfect family environment once she had her chance. Her mother, Clara, moved to Washington, D. C., in search of work that would allow her to support her daughters. She became a wait ress at the elite Pierre restaurant where Franklin Roosevelt was a regular patron. Clara was soon able to bring her girls to the nation's capitol to join her. Louise and her sister graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic High School in June of 1941. She and Betty June immediately went to work to help support her mother and young er sister, Barbara. Within six months, the country was at war and Louise landed a secretarial job for the Defense Department at a new government building called the Pentagon. Wandering through the maze of hallways on one of her first days, utterly lost, she stopped to ask a twenty-seven year old Army Air Corps captain from Seattle, Mills Hay, for directions. They were married on Valentine's Day, Feb ruary 14, 1943. The directions must have been pretty good. A scratch golfer, her new husband soon be came popular around the Pentagon, at one time holding the course record at the legendary Congressional Golf Club, and playing with such luminaries as Hap Arnold and Omar Bradley. She found herself the prove bial golf widow and despite giving birth to their first child, Joan Leslie Hay, in 1944, Louise was determined to become a golfer and a good one at that. In 1946, she had their second child, William Michael Hay. Even this added responsibility did not deter her from her goal to be skilled enough to actually play golf with her husband. At war's end, her husband was a colonel in the newest military arm, the U.S. Air Force, but like many veterans his future was uncertain. However, Mills had been one of the senior officers in charge of first procuring, and then disposing of, essential aircraft parts and material. The expertise in doing this provided him with the inspiration to open his own company, specializing in aircraft propellers. In 1947, Mills convinced Louise to head to the west coast paradise known as Seattle, where it never really rained, just occasionally drizzled. Shortly after their Seat tle arrival, Pacific Propeller was born and it survived many adversities including Louise's realization that it actually did rain in Seattle especially on just about every day of the week, in just about every month of the year. Over the years, Pacific Propeller came to employ hundreds and is still regarded as one of the premier aircraft operations on the west coast. In 1953, they decided to venture way out east to the wild suburbs of Bellevue and into a for mer pea patch cum suburban subdivision, Vuecrest. It was there at 810 Park Road that they would create a nearly perfect blend of Leave it to Beaver and Ozzie and Harriett. Louise's time to produce the optimal anti dote to her own bleak childhood was now. These were truly the happy days. They joined a brand new golf club on the Eastside, Overlake. The next year, 1954, she became women's club champion and also in 1958. In one of her off years, 1955, she had the valid excuse of producing another son, David. Louise would go on to be runner-up three times, including 1971. Together with Mills, she also won the Overlake Husband and Wife tournament on several occasions. He became very proud of how well his "little champ" learned to play the game of golf. Dinners at the Crabapple shopping (Mills would say over-shopping) at Bellevue Square, teaching CCD at Sacred Heart Church, raising her family in the tranquility of the '50s as it spilled over into the tumult of the '60s, and, of course, beating practice balls at Overlake until dark, represented her life during these years, her very best years. Louise's interests, however, went beyond golf and even her family. She was very moved by the civil right movement in the 1960's and frequently volunteered at a Central Area organization, Neighborhood House. She also provided significant assistance to a struggling black family. Many weekends were spent with them at her home or her family at theirs. As her children married and produced their own children, she became the beloved grandmother. When Mills suddenly passed away on Thanksgiving Day 1983, she gracefully assumed the role of matriarch, still vital and a cherished presence in the life of each grandchild. As her health gradually failed over the years, it was, at times, difficult to remember the physically beautiful and personally dynamic person she once was. But as we reflect back, the enduring memory of her indomitable spirit, stunning looks and boundless affection for her family will resonate eternally in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved her. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Sacred Heart Church, 9460 N.E. 14th, Bellevue. Reception to follow at Overlake Golf and CC. The family suggests remembrances to ei ther Bellevue Boys and Girls Club or First Place in Seattle. (Obit dated 11/13/2001.)
