Franklin Wentworth MECHLING
February 28, 1923 - November 3, 2001
Frank W. Mechling "Mec", beloved father and grandfather, loving companion, devoted brother and dear friend completed his earthly journey on November 3, 2001 at age 78. Mere words fail to express the depth of sorrow felt by his loved ones-the hollow void left by his passing. The world has never known a kinder, more thoughtful man than Frank. His selfless nature, generous spirit, moral beacon and wry sense of humor were inspirations to all that knew him. Frank was a pillar of strength to his family, friends, colleagues, church, community and country. He cared deeply about others and was always willing to give support, comfort and help when needed - even when providing that help required him to sacrifice his own needs. Born in El Dorado, Kansas, the last of Harvey & Etta Almena Mechling's six children, Frank graduated from El Dorado High School and at 19 entered the Air Corps as a World War II B-24 pilot. His Air Force career spanned 20 years from flight instructor to his last Reserves assignment as Lt. Colonel, Seattle Civil Air Patrol instructor. Boeing Aircraft Company rehired Frank after the war, where as a "lifer" he ended a 40-plus year career in liaison planning management. Around Boeing plants, Frank received numerous awards and recognition, but it was his inquisitive nature, offbeat humor, string bow ties and marvelous way with people that will be remembered most. Frank's unfailing 55 year love for his devoted wife, Hazel, was shared equally with his seven "M & M" children. Frank embraced his most important role, parenting, and in 1965 won Burien's "Father of the Year" contest, where the family prospered 43 years after a Boeing Wichita transfer. He was active with various baseball leagues as coach and umpire, sports fishing, camping and a short stint as "Medieval Kneivel" motorcyclist. They were charter members of Our Lady of Lourdes parish, where Frank headed many committees and assisted with various activities and charitable fund-raising drives. His faith in God as reflected in his life and spirit, will remain a lasting memory. Aside from his sister Nina Nixon, brother Marion Mechling and numerous nieces and nephews, survivors include his children; Marilyn Pulk (Brian), Marc Mechling (Meredith), Michael Mechling (Lila), Max Mechling, Monty Mechling and Martin Mechling, as well as 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His "doll" Hazel preceded him in death in early 2001, as well as son, Marshall Mechling in 1996 and daughter-in-law, Susan Mechling in 1993. A Memorial Service will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 10240 - 12th So., Seattle on Thursday, November 15, 2001, 11 a.m. A Celebration will follow at St. Thomas Church Social Hall, 4415 - So. 140th St., Tukwila with interment at a later date. The family wishes to express gratitude to all the caring and beloved individuals who have touched our lives and provided comfort. Remembrances to the charity of your choice would honor Frank's caretaking and service legacy. (Obit dated 11/12/2001.)
