Evelyn Swanson
Evelyn Ann Swanson, 82, of Bremerton died April 5, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born May 21, 1916, in Bremerton. She was raised and educated in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1934.
In 1941, she married
Ervin Swanson in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1977.
Mrs. Swanson was a lifelong member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, a member of the Young Ladies Institute and the Altar Society.
Survivors include a son, Tom, of Suquamish; a daughter, Zona DeWeerdt, of Vienna, Va.; and two grandchildren, Sarah DeWeerdt of Seattle and Rebecca DeWeerdt of Vienna, Va.
Rosary recitation and visitation will be at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at Our Lady Star of the Sea. Entombment will be at 11:30 a.m. at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Bernice Cook
Bernice S. Cook, 82, of Bremerton died March 10, 1999, in Seattle.
She was born Jan. 5, 1917, in Flasher, N.D., to Otto and Elva (Nicolls) Schoening. She was raised and educated in Flasher.
On Sept. 14, 1946, she married
Leo V. Cook in Bremerton.
Mrs. Cook was a homemaker and a member of the Hi-Joy Senior Bowling League.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Denise Marks of Pescadero, Calif.; two brothers, Clifford of Bremerton and Marlin of Georgia; four sisters, Eva of Virginia, Elsie of Idaho, Alice of Seattle and Mary Jane of West Virginia; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry.
A graveside service was conducted March 15 at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Irving Walhood
Former longtime Bremerton resident Irving Junior Walhood, 82, died March 19, 1999, in Lynnwood.
He was born In Aneta, N.D., graduating from Aneta High School in 1935.
Mr. Walhood worked as a gas plant operator and painter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and went on to work as a self-employed painter for 20 years.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include a son, Jack, of Lynnwood; a sister, Alice Yeasley, of Bismarck, N.D.; and two grandchildren, Sharilyn Rae Walhood of Port Townsend and Jason Colin Bailey-Walhood of Bothell.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2509 Perry Ave., Bremerton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Barbara Justason
Former Kitsap County resident Barbara Jean Justason, 64, died April 3, 1999, in Mesa, Ariz.
She was born Dec. 19, 1934, in Gold Bar. She graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1953.
Mrs. Justason worked at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport, retiring in 1977.
Survivors include her husband, Larry of Mesa; her mother, Geneva Scott of Moses Lake; her stepmother, Elizabeth Ech of Gold Bar; a brother, Eldrie Verlinde of Phoenix; four half-brothers; three half-sisters; two stepsons, Larry of Torrance, Calif., and Glenn of Keyport; and four stepdaughters, Laurie Serdahl of Suquamish, Linda Hawley of Eugene, Ore., Idamae Ryen of Silverdale and Janice Kelly of Port Orchard.
A memorial service will be Wednesday in Mesa. A local service will be announced at a later date.
Elmer Johnson
Elmer N. Johnson, 79, of Bremerton died April 2, 1999.
He was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Poulsbo to James and Viola (Wistrand) Johnson. He was raised and educated in Poulsbo, graduating from North Kitsap High School in 1937.
In 1942, he married
Ida L. Pleines in Golden, Colo.
Mr. Johnson served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He later worked as a planner and estimator at Bangor, retiring in 1973.
He was a member of the Elks of Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Dale of Bremerton; a brother, Vernon of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Winnie Ruthruff of Mukilteo and Alice Johnsen of Seattle; three grandchildren, Kristoffer Johnson of Bremerton, Craig Johnson of Port Orchard and Shari Jacobson of Silverdale; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary, in 1997.
No services are scheduled.

Alice Urie
Alice Amelia Urie, 92, of Bremerton died April 3, 1999.
She was born Feb. 9, 1907, in Colesburg, Iowa, to Ernest and Elizabeth (Keck) Keeler. She graduated from high school in South Dakota and from Fresno State College in 1930.
On June 14, 1930, she married
Robert K. Urie in Fresno, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1991.
Mrs. Urie started playing the piano for churches at age 12. She was the organist at First Christian Church in Bremerton for 25 years.
Former Gov. Dan Evans presented her with an award for her community service.
Survivors include two sons, Wallace of Lacey and Bob of Bremerton; two brothers, Kenneth of Duarte, Calif., and Keith of Reston, Va.; a sister, Elsie Bollman of Des Moines; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church of Bremerton. Cremation arrangements are by Cherry Grove Crematory with inurnment at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Gladys Gilkey
Gladys M. Gilkey, 80, of Bainbridge Island died March 21, 1999, at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Oct. 15, 1918, in Gilman, Wis., to Ole and Clara Hovde. She was raised in Gilman, moving to the Charleston area of Bremerton at age 14. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1936, and later attended North Pacific College in Portland, Ore.
On April 26, 1941, she married
Franklin Gragg Gilkey in Montesano. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. Gilkey worked as a licensed dental hygienist for Dr. H.L. Laberton's office in Port Orchard for over 20 years, retiring in 1973.
She is survived by her son, Franklin Jr. of Bainbridge Island.
An open house will be conducted from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the family home, 12302 Sunrise Drive NE, Bainbridge Island. Inurnment will be at Kane cemetery in Port Madison.

Gertrude Hall
Gertrude "Trudy" Hall, 83, of Bremerton died April 1, 1999, at Naval Hospital Bremerton.
She was born May 11, 1915, in Hokkaido, Japan, to Grover and Emily (Savory) Gilley. She was raised in Guam.
On March 25, 1950, she married
Harold W. Hall in Agana, Guam.
Mrs. Hall was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish Organizations.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Kenneth of Dallas, Greg of San Diego and Charlie of Bismark, N.D.; a daughter, Gwen Detweiler of Silverdale; a brother, Bobby of Chi Chi Jima, Borin Island; a sister, Mary Bowen of Rohnert Park, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation was Easter Sunday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Services were April 5. Cremation was at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.

Harland Ray
Former Bremerton resident Harland Gene Ray, 56, died of a sudden heart attack March 18, 1999, in Red Bluff, Calif.
He was born Feb. 10, 1943, in Portland, Ore., to Kenneth and Bess (Ames) Ray. He was raised in the Bremerton area, graduating from Central Kitsap High School in 1961.
In 1975, he married
Patricia Ray in Seattle. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Mr. Ray joined the Navy in 1961. He was discharged in 1970 as a petty officer second class. He later worked for 30 years as an independent contractor driving trucks.
He most recently had resided in Tacoma.
Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca of Tacoma; a brother, Kenneth of Bremerton; a sister, Teresa of Everett; three foster brothers, Blain and Mike Sherfinski, both of Bremerton, and Ralph Henderson of Blaine; and three foster sisters, Laurie Lahey of Springfield, Ore., Pam Boyer of Bremerton and Patty Kilanowski of Poulsbo.

Betty Masters
Betty Lee Masters, 71, of Bremerton died March 31, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Nov. 24, 1927, in Kimball, S.D., to Fred and Lillian (Burger) Guthrie.
On Jan 15, 1950, she married
Harold A. Masters in Bremerton.
Mrs. Masters was a homemaker.
She was a member of the American Legion Post 68 Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Renae Sullivan of Tahuya and Denise Slover of Gig Harbor; a sister, Mavis Arney of Bremerton; four grandchildren, Jaymie Hamilton and Michael Adkins, both of Bremerton, and Stacey Jones and Sandy Slover, both of Gig Harbor; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Brian and Kim.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. April 13, at the Tracyton United Methodist Church. Interment
was at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
