Russell Halquist
Russell Albin Halquist, 76, of Bremerton died May 27, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Minneapolis to Leonard Albin and Lillian (Zimmerman) Halquist.
He was raised and educated in the Los Angeles area.
On Dec. 30, 1947, he married
Fern Lind in Los Angeles.
Mr. Halquist enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and served until his retirement in 1971. While in the Navy, he received his high school equivalency diploma.
He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, Vietnam Service medals with two stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal and nine Good Conduct medals. He was discharged at the rank of chief petty officer.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Mary Beattie of Burke, Va., and Cathy Vlastelica of Hollister, Calif.; two brothers, Van of Bremerton and Howard of Templeton, Calif.; two sisters, Dorothy Martin of Seabeck and Lorraine Murphy of Bremerton; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tahoma National cemetery near Kent, with inurnment at the same location.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Thelma Higbee
Thelma Marshall Higbee, 87, of Bremerton died May 27, 1999, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
She was born Sept. 7, 1911, in Lyman, Wyo., to Thomas and Lovinia (Marshall) Perkins.
She was raised in Lima, Mont., and in Franklin, Idaho.
She and her late husband, Vernon, owned and operated Manette TV in East Bremerton from 1948 to the mid-1980s. She became known as Mrs. Manette to many.
She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she directed more than 200 plays, taught children until she retired at age 82 and directed church youth activities here and regionally.
She and Vernon Higbee were married
Sept. 10, 1927, and lived in Kellogg, Idaho, until moving to Bremerton in 1941.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas of San Diego and Floyd of Vaughn in Pierce County; a daughter, Colleen Porter of Boise, Idaho; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three children, Marilyn, Sharon and Rose, three brothers and four sisters.
Visitation will be today at Lewis Funeral Chapel from 9 a.m. to noon and at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2225 Perry Ave., Bremerton, from 1 to 2 p.m. with a funeral service immediately following. Interment
will be at Ivy Green cemetery in Bremerton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Russell Rickabaugh
Longtime Poulsbo resident Russell Emery Rickabaugh, 84, died of natural causes May 28, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 19, 1914, in Clear Lake, S.D., to Roy and Ethel (Hamm) Rickabaugh. He was raised and educated in Clear Lake.
Mr. Rickabaugh moved to Edmore, N.D., and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935. He traveled to Minnesota and New England, N.D., where he met his future wife, Inez. He then traveled to Narratta Falls, Mount Rainier, building trails and parks as a work leader with the CCC. After leaving the Mount Rainier Camp, he worked at the Belfair Camp.
He returned to North Dakota to marry Inez on July 26, 1937. They relocated to Washington, where he became a logger.
Mr. and Mrs. Rickabaugh played music for injured civilians in local hospitals, and this became a career. Joined by his brothers and his sister-in-law, the couple formed a band called The Rainier Boys, performing all over the county. They later changed the name to Mel's Ramblers.
In 1940, he began working at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, first as a coppersmith then as a metallurgist and finally as a pipefitter. He retired in 1970.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis Sr. of Poulsbo; two daughters, Patsy of Poulsbo and Jayne Barker of Silverdale; a sister, Violet Mullins of Belfair; 10 grandchildren, Rusty, Jamie, Karl, Shelly, Dennis, Julie, Kenny, Dawn, Lena and Denise; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, with interment at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
A reception for friends and family will follow the service at the home of Jayne and Chuck Barker.

Percy Thomas
Percy Thomas, 86, of Bremerton died May 28, 1999, at Northwoods Lodge in Silverdale.
He was born Jan. 11, 1913, in Crystal Springs, Miss., to Hollig Thomas and Blanche Jones. On June 23, 1960, he married
Harriet Reynolds.
Mr. Thomas was an ordained minister of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Percy Jr. of Lynden and Holly of Everett; a daughter, Inez Janet Aldridge of Stockton, Calif.; and two sisters, Blanche Edwards of Hot Springs, Ark., and Lucille Turner of Grandbury, Texas.
A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 3414 Ninth St., Bremerton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Dorothy Reed
Dorothy Anna Reed, 80, of Bremerton died May 29, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Philadelphia to Edward and Helen (Mayer) Horan.
She enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served as a nurse in the WAVES until 1945.
She married
her first husband, Clifton Aaron Waldram, on April 28, 1945, and lived in Everett until moving to Bremerton in 1966. He preceded her in death in April 1992.
She retired from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1979 after 20 years of civil service.
On Dec. 19, 1993, she married
her current husband, Delmar Reed, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Reed was an active member of the Degree of Honor Protective Association, the Sons of Norway and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
In addition to her husband, survivors include three daughters, Gail Christensen of Bremerton, Carol Francisco of Los Altos, Calif., and Joan Sturges of Kelseyville, Calif.; a brother, Edward Horan of Summit Station, Pa.; a sister, Marie Carr of Beach Haven Crest, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Kyle and Eric Christensen, Jonathan and Michael Francisco and Dana, Kelsey and Carlie Sturges.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bremerton. A celebration of her life will follow, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sons of Norway Hall.

Truly Taylor
Truly Lee Taylor, 88, of Belfair died June 1, 1999.
She was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Campton, Ky., to William and Frona (Bonham) Proffitt. She was raised in Campton.
Mrs. Taylor was employed as an oyster shucker for 26 years.
She was a member of the Belfair Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son, Tom of Belfair; four grandchildren, Shirley of Bremerton, Chris of Seabeck, Kevin of Port Townsend and Tom Jr. of Ferndale; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1995.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment
will be at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair.
Thomas Heistand
Former longtime Bremerton resident Thomas Ray Heistand, 53, died of cancer May 27, 1999, in Tacoma.
He was born Nov. 6, 1945, in Bremerton to Ray and Trudy Heistand. He was raised and educated in Bremerton, graduating from West High School in 1964. He later received a two-year associate's degree from Tacoma Community College.
He met his wife, Janice, in Bremerton, and on June 8, 1974, they were married
in Tacoma.
Mr. Heistand served in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1968 at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, Calif. He was given an honorable discharge. He later worked as an electrician at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and briefly in auto sales. He then went into the real estate business, working for Coldwell Banker Hawkins-Poe as an associate broker beginning in 1974.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge 174.
Survivors include his wife; his parents; three daughters, Tara of Tacoma, Andrea Richard of Fife and Laura Call of Tacoma; two brothers, Dick and Dan, both of Bremerton; a sister, Nancy House of Bremerton; and four grandchildren, Kristianna, Brittney, Tyler and Allen, all of Fife.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mason United Methodist Church, 2710 N. Madison St., Tacoma.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of Pierce County.
Dan Breeton
Dan Breeton, 59, of Bremerton died July 28, 1999, in Junction City, Ore., of leukemia.
He was born June 23, 1940, in International Falls, Minn., to Millie (Wold) Breeton. He grew up in Bozeman, Mont.
He married
Janet Turpin in Cottage Grove, Ore., on Dec. 18, 1965.
Mr. Breeton attended Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., for three years. He served in the Air Force for four years.
He had worked five years for Weyerhaeuser Co. and
32 years for Lockheed-Martin Missiles and Space Co. He had lived in Cottage Grove, San Jose, Calif., and in Bremerton for the past 23 years.
Mr. Breeton was a member of Elks Lodge 1181 in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; his parents, Millie and Carl Branstetter of Bozeman; a son, Jayson Breeton of Harrisburg, Ore.; a daughter, Angela Breeton of Seattle; two brothers, Monty "Bud" Breeton of Bozeman and Larry Breeton of Butte, Mont.; five sisters, Lana Smith, Barbara Burch and Beverly Ryan, all of Bozeman, Darlene Harrington of Butte and Sandy Schemtiz of Clallam Bay; and a granddaughter, Cynthia Breeton of Harrisburg.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, 123 South Seventh in Cottage Grove. A funeral service is planned for 11:30 a.m. Sunday, also at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Comstock cemetery in Curtin, Ore.
