Rich Richardson
Bonner R. "Rich" Richardson, 87, of Bremerton died July 22, 1999, at Harrison Hospital of a massive stroke.
He was born May 5, 1912, to Robert L. and Lila V. (Shaner) Richardson in Cozad, Neb. He grew up in Smith Center, Kans. and graduated from Smith Center High School in 1929.
He married
Mary Louise Gray on July 4, 1936, in Osborne, Kans.
Mr. Richardson served in the Coast Guard reserve during World War II. He worked as a pipefitter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, working in Bremerton for 27 years and in Guam for 5 years. During his employment there, he won numerous citations for good ideas and safe operations.He retired from the shipyard in 1972. His most recent job was as a consultant for QED.
Mr. Richardson played the cello with the Bremerton Symphony Orchestra. He was a longtime member, deacon and elder of First Christian Church of Bremerton. He also served as a piano accompanist and soloist with the church. He was a charter member and honorable lifetime member of Rolling Hills Golf Club, where The Bonner Richardson Scramble golf tournament bears his name.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wayne of Renton and Bob of Eaglemount; one daughter, Karen Nye of Olympia; one brother, Wyatt of Federal Way; six grandchildren, Shelley Smith of Tumwater, Scott Nye of Ocean Shores, Thea Richardson of Seattle, and Luke, Rose and Ben Richardson of Eaglemount; and two great grandchildren, Ryan Bean and Allison Smith of Tumwater.
Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A graveside service at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park will follow. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church of Bremerton.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Bremerton Organ Restoration Fund.
Frank 'Joe' Zigmund
Frank "Joe" Zigmund, 64, of Bremerton died July 22, 1999, at Northwoods Lodge in Silverdale of heart failure.
He was born Oct. 8, 1934, in Missoula, Mont., to Frank J. and Leah (Evans) Zigmund. He grew up in Missoula, graduating from Missoula High School in 1952.
He married
Phyllis Robinson on Aug. 1, 1959, in Fort Mead, Md.
Mr. Zigmund served in the Navy from 1953 to 1978. His military honors include the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal with Gallantry Cross, seven Good Conduct medals, the Navy Achievement Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 14 years. He was a computer room supervisor at PSNS, retiring in 1997.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Joe Zigmund of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four daughters, Shannon Hensler of Asheville, N.C., Jamie Nordman of San Lorenzo, Calif., Trina Gidley of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Becky Quinn of Santee, Calif.; two brothers, Charles Zigmund of Marysville, Tenn., and Sid Whiting of Polson, Mont.; two sisters, Fran King of Stanwood, and Anne Mae Crisp of Polson; and 10 grandchildren, John and Robin Hensler, Kasee Johnson, George and James Nordman, Brent and Kevin Gidley and Billy, Sara and Matt Quinn.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Nancy Lanphier
Former Bremerton resident Nancy Jane Allen Lanphier, 52, of Phoenix died July 13, 1999, in Phoenix.
She was born Oct. 8, 1946, in Bremerton, where she attended Haddon Elementary School and Coontz Junior High School, graduating from West High School in 1964.
She moved to Arizona in 1964, living there for the past 35 years.
Survivors include a son, Dan of Phoenix; a daughter, Heather of Glendale, Ariz.; her mother and stepfather, Tressie and Curtis Annand; two sisters, Penny Gray of Bremerton and Peggy Eathorne of Sedro Woolley; a stepbrother, Don Annand of Edmonds; and a granddaughter, Myah.
A memorial service was held July 17 in Glendale.
Ruby Peterson
Ruby E. Peterson, 84, of Bremerton died July 20, 1999, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bremerton.
She was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Superior, Wis., to William and Phoebe (Erickson) Stireman.
She had been a restaurant worker, living most of her life in Superior. She had lived in Bremerton for the past 11 years.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry McDowell of Mason City, Iowa, Grant Peterson of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Jim Peterson of Enid, Okla.; five daughters, Elaine McDowell Peterson of Bremerton, Marlene Peterson of Superior, Judy Peterson Jager of Monterey, Calif., Patricia Peterson Harris of Niceville, Fla., and Alice Peterson Moonjean of West Covina, Calif.; five brothers, Robert Stireman of Indian River, Mich., William Stireman of West Branch, Mich., Jack Stireman of Midvale, Utah, Raymond Stireman of West Valley City, Utah, and Roger Stireman of Murray, Utah; four sisters, Dallas Tuomisto of Mesa, Ariz., Marian Dumas of Southfield, Mich., Lavergn McRae of Murray, Utah, and Lillian Hasenfratz of Oakland, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Lyle, preceded her in death in 1975. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marlene, in 1935; and a sister, Florence Ostrander.
Services to celebrate her life will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton, with final services and inurnment planned for Aug. 7 in Provo, Utah.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Lois Chandler
Lois Chandler, 93, died July 14, 1999, at Martha & Mary Health Center in Poulsbo.
She was born Feb. 2, 1906, in Austin, Texas, to R.E. and Clara Pace Stidham.
While attending the University of Arizona, she met Lloyd E. Chandler, who was studying law. They both earned degrees in 1930.
Mrs. Chandler attended graduate school in California, Washington and Mexico. She taught in Arizona and California.
In 1942, she joined the Navy as part of the first class of women commissioned. With a degree in cartography, she secured a position in the Hydrographic Office in Washington, D.C., working on charts for many of the invasions in the Pacific Campaign during World War II.
She married
Mr. Chandler on Aug. 6, 1947, in Sebastopol, Calif. They settled in San Pedro, Calif., where she worked for the Submarine Force of the 11th Naval District.
Upon retirement, the Chandlers moved to Marrowstone Island, building a home on Mystery Bay. They were members of the Nordland Garden Club.
Survivors include her first cousins, Marie Fassett and Percy Ridgway, both of Seattle. She was preceded in death by her husband and by a sister, Kathryn.
A memorial service was held at Liberty Shores Assisted Living Retirement Community in Poulsbo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jack Murdock Auditorium, Naval Undersea Museum, in Keyport.
Claudie Reinke
Claudie Leone Reinke, 91, of Portland, Ore., died July 20, 1999, at Portland Adventist Hospital. She had lived in Kitsap County for 60 years.
She was born June 2, 1908, in Guthrie, Okla., to Benjamin and Mildred (Sullivan) Duggins. She was raised and educated in Lamar, Colo.
She married
Rudolph Reinke in 1929 in Lamar. He preceded her in death in 1969.
Mrs. Reinke had worked as a cook for the Bremerton School District for many years. She was a member of Charleston Baptist Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy
Gjenden of Portland; a brother, Clyde Duggins of Portland; a sister,
Pauline Falconberg of Jerome, Idaho; seven grandchildren, Michael Gjenden of Spokane, Mark Gjenden of Portland, David Nurnberger of Hillsboro, Ore., Scott Oken of Seattle, Karl and Karen Reinke, both of Edmonds, and Shawn Reinke Hargis of Virginia; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Gladys Ward
Former Kitsap County resident Gladys E. Kratz Ward, 85, of Des Moines, Wash., died July 18, 1999, of natural causes at Wesley Terrace in Des Moines.
She was born Jan. 18, 1914, in Puyallup to George and Jennie (Gauley) Stoaks. She grew up in Puyallup, graduating from Puyallup High School.
For many years, she worked at the Port Orchard Police Department. She was also a clerk for Judge Winifred Watts, a Kitsap County traffic court judge in Port Orchard in the 1950s and 1960s.
She ran Price's Drive-in Dairy Store in Port Orchard with her first husband, Ray W. Kratz. She also worked at Kimmell's Grocery Store on Vashon Island and at Bremer's Department Store in Bremerton.
Later, Mrs. Ward owned and operated the Dance Apparel Store in Tacoma for 14 years, until her retirement.
She had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Port Orchard Methodist Church and, more recently, Gig Harbor Methodist Church.
Survivors include a stepson, Leroy Ward of Maryland; a daughter, Phyllis Bach of Shoreline; six grandchildren, Brian Bach of Shoreline, Darrin Bach of Lake Stevens, Lenora Stallings of Tucson, Ariz., Nicole Wallin of Oklahoma City, Okla., Michael Ward of Atlanta, Ga., and Skip Ward of Frederick, Md.; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband in 1959. Her second husband, Lee Ward, also preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment
will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Charles Thoms Sr.
Charles W. Thoms Sr., 92, of Port Orchard died July 21, 1999, at his home.
He was born July 12, 1907, in New York City to Richard and Martha (Kremser) Thoms.
He married
Ellen D. McCormick on Aug. 2, 1926, in Detroit, Mich. She preceded him in death in 1974.
Mr. Thoms served in the Naval Reserve. He was employed by Detroit Edison for 19 years, then moved to Port Orchard in 1945. He worked at a warehouse and drove a truck for lumber yards, retiring in the early 1970s.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Port Orchard Eagles (for 43 years), the Moose Lodge and a square-dancing group, the Round Squares Club. He was an honorary member of the Paws and Taws and Square Steppers clubs.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Jr., Richard and William, all of California; three daughters, Mary Ellen Stratton of Seattle, Martha Greenwood of California and Joan Heriot of Port Orchard; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the KSDA Square Dance Hall in Gorst. Inurnment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Lloyd Wilkins
Former Bremerton resident Lloyd Arleigh Wilkins, 81, of Olympia died July 20, 1999, in Hoquiam.
He was born June 17, 1918, in Tacoma to Lloyd Lee and Dora Belle Wilkins. He grew up in Bremerton.
He married
Barbara Ann Gibson in Bremerton in May 1940. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. Wilkins worked at the Bremerton Naval Ammunition Depot from 1941 to 1948 and owned and operated a service station from 1949 to 1972. He was employed by the Aberdeen Water Department from 1971 until his retirement in 1984.
He was a volunteer with the North Perry Volunteer Fire Department from 1948 to 1973.
Survivors include a son, John of Bremerton; a daughter, Carol Ann Howell of Elma; a brother, George of Clarkston; three sisters, Lois Williams of Port Orchard, Kathleen Vorhees of Lake Mason and Edna Madison of Silverdale; three grandchildren, Chris Howell of Minnesota, Cheryl Graf of Olalla and John Wilkins Jr. of Bremerton; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Wilkins.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wishka Valley Community Church in Aberdeen. Inurnment will take place at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen.
