Laura Mahaney
Former Poulsbo resident Laura Dianne Mahaney, 34, of Bend, Ore., died June 29, 1999, at her home after a brief illness.
She was born April 15, 1965, in Boulder, Colo., to James and Bonnie Gaines.
Before her illness, she was the assistant manager for Hampton Inn in Bend.
Survivors include her husband, Randall; a daughter, Sarah Dianne of Bend; her mother, Bonnie Gaines of Poulsbo; a sister, Terri Bowers of Kirkland; and a brother, Richard Gaines of Poulsbo. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jordan Florence, and by her father.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Westside Church, 2051 NW Shevlin Park Road, in Bend. Arrangements are under the direction of Niswonger, Reynolds & Tabor Funeral Home in Bend.

Kathryn Angstead
Kathryn M. Angstead, 59, of Port Orchard died June 30, 1999, at her home of pancreatic cancer.
She was born May 25, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa, to Robert A. and Rita (Vorwerk) Beine. She grew up in Burlington, graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1958.
She married
Donald E. Angstead on June 11, 1960, in Burlington.
Mrs. Angstead had been a teller supervisor at Kitsap Community Federal Credit Union, retiring in 1998. Previously, she had been employed by Kitsap Bank from June 1979 to September 1985.
She was a member of the Port Orchard Eagles Auxiliary, the Holiday Rambler RV Club, and the Retired Military RV Club Chapter 421.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Christopher Angstead of Springfield, Va.; a daughter, Kelley Cassity of Windsor, Calif.; a brother, Robert Beine of Sanford, Fla.; two sisters, Rita Cross of Chariton, Iowa, and Barbara Kriegbaum of Baldwin City, Kan.; two grandchildren, Deming and Renick Cassity, both of Windsor; and a stepgrandson, Kenny Lockwood of Springfield, Va. She was preceded in death by a brother, James, on May 4, 1990.
A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. Interment
will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Gladys Bartsch
Gladys Margaret Bartsch, 77, of Poulsbo died June 30, 1999, at Harborview Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Huron, S.D., to George and Maude (Ingalls) Schwartz. She was raised and educated in Huron.
She had worked as a nursing assistant for most of her life at the Lake Preston Nursing Home in Lake Preston, S.D.
She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Huron and in Poulsbo.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Gardner of Germany and Larry Gardner of Silverdale; two daughters, Carol Palmer of Bowdle, S.D., and Shirley Sheppard of Silverdale; a brother, Willie Schwartz of South Dakota; a sister, Effie Hoover of Wisconsin; and 14 grandchildren, Kristopher Gardner of Alaska, Anastasia Gardner, Kristy Gardner, Jack Palmer, John Palmer, Scott Bartsch and April Bartsch, all of South Dakota, Angela and Sara Gardner and Aaron, Tessa, Kruz and Lucille Wright, all of Silverdale, and Mark Gardner of Texas.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday also at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. Private family committal will take place at a later date in South Dakota.

Phyllis Michalek
Phyllis Ruth Michalek, 72, of Poulsbo died June 28, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Aug. 28, 1926, in Warren, Minn., to Steve and Iva (Truhn) Ovsak. She grew up in Warren, graduating from Warren High School in 1944.
She married
her childhood sweetheart, Maurice E. Michalek, on Aug. 2, 1945, in Warren.
From 1944 to 1945, she worked at the court house in Warren. In 1945, she began working for the newspaper in Warren, The Warren Sheaf, remaining there through 1946. She also was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Poulsbo, the Sons of Norway, the Prisoner of War Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Merrie Beth Michalek of Port Hadlock and Nancy Truarth of Bainbridge Island; a brother, Jim Ovsak of Boulder, Colo.; and a sister, Mary Alice Bliven of Minot, N.D.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Olaf's Catholic Church. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Warren. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Terry Phelps
Terry Scott Phelps, 42, of Poulsbo died June 28, 1999.
He was born Feb. 18, 1957, to Janet (Barcklay) Custer. He grew up in Washington, graduating from Ballard High School.
He married
Laura R. Edwards on Dec. 19, 1991, in Mazatlan, Mexico.
Mr. Phelps had been sales manager at Courtesy Ford in Poulsbo for seven years.
Mr. Phelps was a member of the Harley Owners Group of Silverdale and the Silverdale Pee Wee Football League.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; two sons, Bill Phelps of California and Chris Phelps of Poulsbo; a daughter, Carrie Ramirez of Hawaii; a brother, Steve Phelps of Lynnwood; a sister, Liz Clement of Auburn; and two grandchildren, Juan Ramirez Jr. and Makayla Ramirez.
A memorial service will take place today at the Phelps home.

Esther May
Esther M. May, 64, of Kent died June 24, 1999, at Auburn General Hospital.
She was born Nov. 12, 1934, in Manchester.
She married
Lawrence Joseph May on July 29, 1955, in Port Orchard.
Mrs. May was the manager of Sheeffen's Trailer Court in Kent. She worked in that position for 30 years.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Thomas Joseph May of Kent; four daughters, Gladys Marie Buswell and Kristi Rose Bartley, both of Kent, Katherine Yvonne Benson of Pennsylvania and Beverly Jean Benson of New York; a brother, Chester Griffith of Belfair; three sisters, Lilly Kelly of Clarkston and Margaret O'Donnell and Virginia Hines, both of Bremerton; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service took place Tuesday at Mount Olivet cemetery in Renton.
Rosemary Cooper
Rosemary J. Cooper, 66, a resident of Kitsap County for 15 years, died June 27, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born July 11, 1932, in Middleton, Ohio, to Willie and Eudel (Fullwood) Davis. She was raised and educated in Macon, Ga.
She worked as a nurse for several years.
She was a member of Emmanuel Apostolic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include four daughters, Tovi Wilkins of Bremerton, Deborah Jones of Cleveland, Marva Jones of Kingston and Brenda Pollard of Macon; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olden, on July 7, 1987, and by a daughter, Roberta Wiley, on Jan. 12, 1996.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Sylvan Way Baptist Church in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Phillip Goldman
Phillip Nathaniel Goldman, 89, of Bremerton died June 26, 1999, in Port Orchard.
He was born June 1, 1910, in San Francisco to Jacob and Rose (Harrison) Goldman. He grew up in Los Angeles.
He married
Elsye Schwecke in Oakland, Calif., in 1943. She preceded him in death in 1976.
Mr. Goldman worked as a custodian at Sheridan Village recreation hall in Bremerton. Previously, he had been a keno writer in Reno, Nev., and a taxicab driver in Oakland, Calif.
Survivors include a son, Jackie Dolgorouky of Port Orchard; five grandchildren, Yon, Yvonne, Yvette, Yurrika and Cuc; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Inurnment will take place in Reno. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Fred Johnson
Fred Julius Johnson, 76, of Suquamish died June 22, 1999, of heart failure at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
He was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Nibbe, Mont., to Julius Carl Johnson and Mamie Mae Sert. He grew up in Redmond.
Mr. Johnson worked for the city of Seattle in the Department of Lighting for 28 years, retiring in 1978.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah (Taylor) Johnson; a son, Robert Johnson of Bonney Lake; three brothers, James Johnson of Oceana Park, Wash., Gilbert Johnson of Yuma, Ariz., and Carl Johnson of Pittsburg, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Searces of Seattle; three grandchildren, all of Bonney Lake; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Francis Gable
Retired Navy Master Chief Electronics Technician Francis Pollock Gable, 72, of Poulsbo died June 28, 1999, at his home of a smoking-related illness.
He was born May 11, 1927, in Harrisburg, Pa. He grew up in Shiremanstown, Pa., graduating from Mechanicsburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Pa., in 1945.
He married
Betty A. Berko on June 8, 1946, in Seattle.
Mr. Gable served in the Navy from 1945 until his retirement in 1964. His military honors included the American Campaign Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, four Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Medal and the Korean Service Medal.
Mr. Gable also worked at the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station at Keyport for 22 years, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Carol Orsborn of Sequim, Frances Knowles of Juneau, Alaska, and Jennifer Gable of Clallam Bay; a sister, M. Annan Siefert of Mechanicsburg; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private service will take place at the family home in Poulsbo at 1 p.m. Sunday. A Navy burial at sea will take place at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
