Donald Cole Jr.
Donald Leslie Cole Jr., 52, of Bremerton died Sept. 23, 1999, at his home.
He was born Sept. 9, 1947, in Dallas, Ore., to Gladys Luella (Kihlstadius) and Donald Cole Sr.
Mr. Cole served in the Army from 1965 to 1968. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
He owned and operated Cole Installations. He was retired.
Survivors include a son, Ryan of Phoenix; a daughter, Victoria of Bremerton; and a grandchild, Brian of Bremerton.
No services are planned. Cremation is under the direction of Cherry Grove Memorial Park in Poulsbo. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Elina Alfred
Elina Alfred, 89, of Bremerton died Sept. 29, 1999, at SunRise Care and Rehabilitation of Oyster Bay.
She was born Aug. 13, 1910, in Lowell to Mathew and Mina (Hall) Keltanen. She was raised and educated in Bremerton, graduating from Union High School as valedictorian in 1927. She also graduated from Bellingham Normal School (now Western Washington University) in 1929.
She taught school in Kitsap County and in Alaska. She was active in PTSA in Bremerton schools and was a Golden Acorn award recipient.
She was a member of the Retired Officers Wives Club, the Kitsap Mycological Society, Peddle Pushers, the East Bremerton Garden Club and Manette Community Church.
Survivors include her husband, Harold; three sons, Dave of Gig Harbor, Loren of Delton, Mich., and Bruce of Renton; a daughter, Barbara Logue of Renton; a sister, Janice Gibbons of Seattle; eight grandchildren, Gregory and Andrea Logue, JoAnn Franklin, Jeanne Dyke, Karl Mossyrock and Jim, Matt and Ken Alfred; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the committal service at 11 a.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Manette Community Church. Cremation is under the direction of Cherry Grove Memorial Park with inurnment at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Manette Community Church, 1137 Hayward Ave., Bremerton, WA 98310.

Judith Ahumada
Judith Ann (McGrath) Ahumada, 51, of Port Orchard died Sept. 27, 1999, in Port Orchard.
She was born Jan. 22, 1948, to Michael and Janice (Bergeron) Woodford. She grew up in Quincy, Mass., graduating from Quincy High School. She attended Olympic College and Bates Vocational/Technical College.
She attended Christ The Rock Community Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include her father, now of Port Orchard; a son, David McGrath of Federal Way; two daughters, Stacey Skillman of Port Orchard and Jessica Ahumada; three brothers, Charlie, Mickey and Andy, all of Kitsap County; three sisters, Donna, Bonnie and Maggie, all of Kitsap County; and four grandchildren, Noah, Ashley, Shanelle and Nicole.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. today at Christ The Rock Community Church.

Louis Thomas
Louis J. Thomas, 85, of Bremerton died Sept. 27, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 10, 1914, in Jackson, Miss., to Joseph Louis and Ruth Kelly (Hearns) Thomas, the youngest of six children. He was educated at Gilbert Academy in New Orleans.
Upon completing the academy, he met and married Mildred O. Jackson in New Orleans on June 28, 1942.
Mr. Thomas served in the Army during World War II. He was an original member of the Buffalo Soldiers, receiving a Purple Heart.
He relocated to Bremerton in 1945, joining Sinclair Missionary Baptist Church in 1946 and remaining active until his health began to fail.
He was chairman of the church's board of deacons for more than 25 years, taught Sunday school, was a member of the Prayer Band and served, at the time of his death, as chairman of the church's Benevolent Fund.
Mr. Thomas was employed by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 36 years, retiring in 1978. He also had been an employee of Bremers Department Store.
He had been a trustee and president of the Sunnyslope Improvement Association; a volunteer fireman for more than 30 years; a member of the board of directors of the former Peoples' Credit Union; a member of American Legion Post 149 and a member of the Moose Lodge of Port Orchard.
Survivors include three daughters, Mildred Bynes Turner and Ruth Laners, both of Bremerton, and Pearl of Seattle; a son, Earl of Bremerton; nine grandchildren, Earlene Michelle Bynes, Simone Laners, Catherine Laners, Victoria Laners, Nyasha Laners, Malaika Laners and Abraham Laners, all of Bremerton, Sonya Bell of Seattle and Preston Bynes of San Jose, Calif.; and two sisters, Catherine Fields and Lillian Simmons, both of Slidell, La. He was preceded in death by his wife, three sisters and two sons.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Sinclair Missionary Baptist Church.
Memorial donations may be made to Sunnyslope Improvement Association, 5830 Old Clifton Road, Port Orchard, WA 98366 and/or to Sinclair Benevolent Fund, P.O. Box 4326, Bremerton, WA 98312.

Grant Thurston
Grant Raymond Thurston, 53, of Tahuya died Sept. 24, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 28, 1946, in Ballard to Raymond George and Barbara Lou (Wilhelm) Thurston. He graduated from Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Wash., in 1964.
Mr. Thurston served in the Army from 1969 to 1972. He was a HAWK Missile System specialist fifth class.
He completed an apprenticeship program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He worked as an air-conditioning and refrigeration specialist at PSNS, retiring in June of this year.
He and his wife, Patricia, were married on March 10, 1973, in Vancouver.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Leah Dunham of Belfair and Nikki Curry of Tahuya; a stepdaughter, Margeaux Bruce of Tahuya; a brother, Greg of Seattle; and a grandson, Brandon Dunham of Belfair.
A celebration of his life and potluck is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Thurston residence in Tahuya. Cremation is under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Elgie Altimus
Elgie Sefton Altimus, 101, of Port Ludlow died Sept. 26, 1999, at Liberty Shores Assisted Living in Poulsbo.
He was born Feb. 23, 1898, in Scholocta, Pa., to Ellsworth and Maude (Wilcox) Altimus. He graduated from high school in Central Point, Ore., and attended various colleges throughout his life.
Mr. Altimus served in the Army from Dec. 8, 1917, to July 30, 1919. He was a medic during World War I, fighting in France. This year, he received an award from France for his service there.
He was retired from a career with the U.S. Forestry Service.
He married Birdie Reddick on July 14, 1924, in Vancouver, Wash. She preceded him in death in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Harold "Bud" of Tacoma; three daughters, Evelyn Ward of Los Alamos, N.M., Juanita McCreery of Woodinville and Elaine Castlio of Clackamas, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is planned for 3 p.m. today at Willamette National cemetery in Portland, Ore. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Briana Portillo
Briana Noemi Portillo, the daughter of Leroy Ramirez Portillo Sr. and Mariela (Mendoza) Portillo of Port Orchard, was stillborn Sept. 25, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
Survivors include her parents; a brother, Leroy Jr.; her maternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Yolanda and Kenny Retzlaff of Bremerton; and her paternal grandparents, Librada Ramirez of Brownsville, Texas, and Estanislado Portillo of Weslaco, Texas.
A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, followed by a graveside service at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Arnold Rung
Arnold G. Rung, 84, of Bremerton died of natural causes Sept. 13, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Nov. 11, 1914, in Winona to Madaline and Fred Rung. He grew up in Winona.
Mr. Rung was a member of the Eagles in Bremerton.
Survivors include a son, Darrell of Seattle, and two granddaughters, Beth of Seattle and Amanda. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Avis Rung, this year.
Private services were held. Memorial donations may be made to the Eagles in Bremerton.

Mary Walhood
Mary L. Walhood, 83, a longtime Bremerton resident, died Sept. 13, 1999, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bremerton.
She was born Jan. 10, 1916, to Nellie and Henry Rugroden in Devil's Lake, N.D., where she spent most of her childhood.
She met and married Lenard O. Walhood in Aneta, N.D. The Walhoods moved to Bremerton in 1949.
Mrs. Walhood was a homemaker and seamstress. She also worked with her daughter in child care for Peninsula Bible Fellowship in Bremerton.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Mayer of Bremerton; a son, Wayne of Bremerton; a sister, Nellie Johnson of Devil's Lake; and two granddaughters, Lisa Knauss of Michigan and Sheena of Lacey. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975.
A memorial service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Peninsula Bible Fellowship. Memorial donations may be made to Peninsula Bible Fellowship, 9590 Radcliff Ave. NE, Bremerton, WA 98311.

Elizabeth Smith
Elizabeth Caroline Smith, 71, a Novato, Calif., resident for 28 years and a former resident of Bremerton, died of cancer Sept. 13, 1999, in Novato.
She was born in 1928 in Kent to J. Harvey and Nellie Leach. She grew up in Seattle and Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School.
She attended the University of Washington and received an associate degree in art history from the College of Marin in Marin County, Calif.
She was a member of the Alpine Club, Alpha Phi Sorority, the Navy Officers' Wives Club and the Marin Jewish Community Center. She was a member of St. Francis Assisi Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Roland C. Smith of Novato; a son, Roger A. Smith of Costa Mesa, Calif.; a daughter, Robin S. Cox of San Carlos, Calif.; two sisters, Nelladean Thorsen of Edmonds and Joy "Dede" Beckley of Bremerton; and four grandchildren, Jessica and Taylor Smith, both of Costa Mesa, and Allison and Heather Cox, both of San Carlos.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellen Ave., Corte Madera, CA 94925.

Kay Schippman
Kathleen Lillian "Kay" Schippman, 61, of Port Orchard died Sept. 17, 1999, in Port Orchard of complications from surgery.
She was born Aug. 27, 1938, in Port Angeles to Roy E. and Lillian E. (Jagger) Pike. She grew up in Port Angeles, graduating from Port Angeles High School in 1956.
She married Douglas R. Schippman on March 31, 1956, in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.
Mrs. Schippman worked for an advertising agency in San Diego from 1959 to 1964; was director of Chuckwagon Senior Nutrition Program in Bremerton from 1974 to 1983; worked for ABC Rentals in Bremerton from 1984 to 1988; and was employed for 10 years by Pro Rentals (1988 to 1998) in Bremerton.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star 44 in Port Orchard and had been past worthy matron of the Port Orchard chapter. She also was a past deputy in the OES at the Washington state level and was a member of the West Sound Quilters Guild.
Survivors include her husband; her father, now of Port Orchard; two sons, Roy of Grass Valley, Calif., and Edward of Nevada City, Calif.; a daughter, Frances Wilson of Bremerton; a sister, Frances Reiter of Port Orchard; and seven grandchildren, Erick and Glen Wilson, both of Bremerton, Matt Schippman and Michelle Savell, both of Grass Valley, Serena Schippman of Nevada City and Joshua and Grace Schippman, both of Shelton.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Private interment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Adventist Community Services, 5000 Bethel Road, Port Orchard, WA 98366.
