Byron Virden
Byron L. Virden, 53, of Bremerton died Sept. 25, 1999, at Harrison Hospital after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 28, 1946, in Long Beach, Calif., to Virgil and Marie (Wagoner) Virden. Their military family traveled extensively. He graduated from Bethel High School in Spanaway in 1965.
Mr. Virden served in the Navy from 1965 to 1973. He was a Vietnam veteran, having been awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He worked as an instructor and inspector at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for more than 20 years.
He married
Bonnie J. Cowan on March 21, 1986, in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; his parents, now of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a son, Ronald of Bremerton; a daughter, Ronda Kraft of Billings, Mont.; a stepson, Darrell Hood of Port Orchard; two stepdaughters, Christy Boshears and Sherri Hood, both of Bremerton; a brother, Bill of Olalla; two sisters, JoAnn Hornbeck of Higley, Ariz., and Judy Reynolds of Spanaway; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m. Interment
will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Minnie Bruce
Minnie Grace (Lloyd) Bruce, 93, of Port Orchard died Sept. 24, 1999, at Port Orchard Care Center of natural causes.
She was born June 12, 1906, in Boise, Idaho, to Ernest and Cora (Taylor) Lloyd. She grew up in Boise, in Helena, Mont., and in Toppenish.
She was married
to Paul Bruce for 54 years. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bruce was a homemaker. She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include two sons, John "Jack" of Phoenix and Wilbur "Willie" of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, LaVera "Vera" Stricker of Harper and Alberta Johnson of Sturgeon, Mo.; five grandchildren, Cheryl of Jackson, Miss., Dennis of Utah, Bruce Edholm of Salem, Ore., Keith Edholm of Mountlake Terrace and Theodore "Ted" Edholm of Bucoda; and six great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Willis; three sisters, Teresa Anderson of Bremerton, Jennie Dunn of Puyallup and Mildred Lloyd of Boise; and a daughter, Marie Edholm of Port Orchard.
A memorial service is planned for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Seventh-day Adventist Church in Port Orchard. Inurnment will take place at 1 p.m. Monday at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Ernest Kennedy
Ernest E. Kennedy, 77, of Bremerton died Sept. 21, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Valier, Mont., to Frank and Lena Kennedy. He attended school in Lewiston, Mont., graduating from high school in 1941.
Mr. Kennedy served in the Navy from Jan. 20, 1942, to Oct. 2, 1945. He served aboard the USS Idaho as a machinist's mate second class in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign, participating in 14 bombardments.
He was employed at the former Western Gas Co. in Bremerton and as a fireman engineer at Harrison Hospital. He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1949 until his retirement in 1976. He was a shop production planner (marine machinist) at PSNS.
Mr. Kennedy was an active musician, forming the Ernie Kennedy Trio, also know as The New Dealer Band. He played in various jazz and modern combo groups in the Bremerton area.
He was a life member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 76 in Seattle and also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 239.
Survivors include his wife, Lenore; two sons, Richard and Dean; a daughter, Ernie Rae; a brother, Herb of Lewistown; a sister, Mrs. C.E. Meserve of Winnett, Mont.; and his former wife, Anita. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Scott Sutherland, and by a sister, Mrs. Omar Mullin of Richland.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Oct. 9 at VFW Post 239, 190 South Dora Ave. in Bremerton. A reception will follow.

Elise Griffin
Elise Griffin, 77, of Bremerton died Sept. 24, 1999 in Bremerton of natural causes.
She was born in Taylor, Texas, on Oct. 3, 1921, to Tom and Lula Bell (Sneed) Wooldridge. She was raised in Taylor and graduated from Blackshire High School there in 1937.
She married
Frank James Griffin on Dec. 7, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas.
Mrs. Griffin was a homemaker and belonged to the Ebenezer AME Church. She was also a member of the Martha Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, the Blue Star Mothers, the NAACP and Kitsap Community Action Programs.
Survivors include three sons, William Decker Johnson of Seattle, Jessie J. Griffin of Bothell and Keith E. Griffin of Bremerton; five daughters, Verna J. Cheatham of Tacoma, Bernice B. Griffin of Tacoma, Theresa M. Perkins of Port Orchard, Deadra V. Smith of Bremerton and Elise L. Daniels of Silverdale; one brother, Lewis Clifford Wooldridge of San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Tessie R. Williams of Bremerton; 28 grandchildren, Andrea, Princess, Kirk, Jeannine, Jessica, Junelle, Justine, Aaron Jr., Craig, Monique, Tiffany, LaTrease, Annquenette, Larry, Deadra, Hurschuma, Azzizi, Keith C., Angela, Curtis, Keisha, Kaylah, Jordan, Marshaud, Corey, Marshall II, Maurshell and Rochelle; 32 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother, three grandsons and one great-grandson.
A visitation will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel.
Burial will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Eunice Anderson
Eunice Ellen Anderson, 86, of Port Orchard died Sept. 25, 1999, at Ridgemont Terrace Nursing Home in Port Orchard.
She was born Aug. 16, 1913 in Eunice, N.M., to George and Emma (Womble) King. She grew up in Oklahoma and came to Kitsap County in 1944.
She married
Arthur A. Anderson in 1946. After 50 years of marriage, he preceded her in death in 1996.
Mrs. Anderson was a homemaker and enjoyed flowers and fishing.
Survivors include a son, Ken Love of Jersey City, N.J.; four grandchildren, Rebecca Klien of Charlotte, N.C., Mark Love of Louisville, Ky., David Love of Independence, Mo., and Adam Love of Chilhowie, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren.
No services will be held. Cremation will be at Cherry Grove Memorial Park, with inurnment at Sunrise Terrace Columbarium at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Georgia Hubbell
Georgia M. Hubbell, 78, of Port Orchard died Sept. 23, 1999, at her home.
She was born June 30, 1921, in Seward, Alaska, to Raymond and Christin (Heitman) Young. She moved to Port Orchard at the age of 15, graduating from South Kitsap High School in 1939.
She married
Allan W. Hubbell on Feb. 22, 1942, in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Mrs. Hubbell was a homemaker. She was also a member of the Association of Retarded Citizens and the 4-H Club of Kitsap County.
Survivors include three sons, Ray, Bill and Gary, all of Port Orchard; two daughters, Trisha Lintho-Hubbell of Benton City, Wash., and Carol Hubbell of Port Orchard; a brother, Raymond Young of Seattle; a sister, Marie Alvarado of Carson City, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Michael Hubbell, Colleen Jacobs-Kincaid, Jason Hubbell, Jondrea Hubbell, Robin Hubbell, Kris Lintho, Heather Kanta-Hubbell and Scott Bentley; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Edwin Hubbell and John Jacobs.
A memorial service is planned for noon Sunday at Manchester State Park. Inurnment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Helena Sainsbury
Helena M. Sainsbury, 89, a resident of Belfair for five years and formerly of Salem, Ore., died Sept. 24, 1999.
She was born in Roswell, N.M., on April 3, 1910.
She was a lifetime member of the Salvation Army, serving as a minister and missionary for 28 years.
She never married
and was known as "Auntie" to her niece and two nephews who survive her. They are Carol Madsen of Belfair, David West of Salem and Richard West of Austin, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Salem. Inurnment will take place at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor.
Gerald Parker
Gerald Leslie Parker, 79, of Bremerton died Sept. 24, 1999, at his home.
He was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Pilot Rock, Ore.
He married
Bonnie Jean Baldwin on May 28, 1955, in Olympia.
Mr. Parker served in the Army.
He was a truck driver at the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor, retiring in 1980, and worked as a carrier for The Sun for four years.
He was an active member of Navy Yard City Bible Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Daniel Glenn Parker of Silverdale; a daughter, Joyce Marie Fink of Olympia; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Tuesday at Navy Yard City Bible Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee Funeral and Cremation Services of Bremerton.

Teresa Lafnitzegger
Teresa Lafnitzegger, 38, an Olalla resident since 1989, died Sept. 20, 1999.
She was born Nov. 14, 1960, in Vallejo, Calif.
She was a business entrepreneur and a nuclear training supervisor at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Survivors include two sons, Alex and Dodge, and their father, Eric, all of Olalla; her mother and stepfather, Stella and Chuck Frederick; four sisters, Valerie Oakes, Dana Mortier, Sharon Mansfield and Margie Nichol; her father, Richard Vice; and her companion, Gary Van Horn.
A funeral service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at Haven of Rest Chapel in Gig Harbor. Interment
will take place at Haven of Rest Memorial Park.

Dorothy Carpenter
Dorothy M. Carpenter, 76, of Bremerton died Sept. 22, 1999, at her home of emphysema.
She was born April 30, 1923, in Chicago to Charles and Lydia (Staenke) Harris. She grew up in Keyport, graduating from North Kitsap High School in 1940.
She married
James Carpenter in Seattle in 1973. He preceded her in death in 1989.
She worked as a riveter at The Boeing Co. for 20 years. She retired in 1985.
She was member of the Salmon Bay Eagles in Seattle.
Survivors include five sons, Denny Baird and Rick Hart, both of Bremerton, Frank Baird of Nevada and Barry Baird and David Hart, both of Seattle; five daughters, Diana Gappa of Bremerton, Kathleen Baird of Florida, Penney Jabon of Bainbridge Island, Robin Groves of Seattle and
Tracey Hart of Bellingham; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel. Interment
will take place at Island Lake cemetery.
