Ellen McFarland
Ellen Lee McFarland, 49, of Port Hadlock died of cancer Sept. 5, 1999, in Port Townsend.
She was born Jan. 31, 1950, in Bremerton to Arthur and Lorraine Oesterhaus. She graduated from West High School in Bremerton in 1968.
She was a member of the Elks.
Survivors include her father; a son, Tyson of Bremerton; a daughter, Lyndsey of Bellingham; two brothers, Roy Oesterhaus and Glen Oesterhaus, both of Bremerton; and a sister, Carolyn Cunningham of Boynton Beach, Fla.
A memorial service took place Wednesday at the Lutheran Church of The Redeemer in Port Hadlock. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Janet Bahler
Former Bremerton resident Janet Adele Applequist Bahler, 61, of San Diego died Aug. 28, 1999, in her home.
She was born April 2, 1938, in Seattle to Frank and Evelyn Applequist. She was raised and educated in Bremerton, graduating from high school in 1956.
She married
Bob Bahler on Sept. 21, 1963.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Lori McCure of Crystal River, Fla., and Amber J. Edrose of Miami; a son, Duane V. Bahler of San Diego; a sister, Elsie Goldsworhty of Las Vegas, Nev.; and six grandchildren.
A private burial service took place Tuesday at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Eugene Waldron
Eugene Waldron, 77, of Bremerton died Aug. 30, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Waldron; five sons, Duane Waldron, Delbert Jacobs and David, Richard and Terry Jones; three daughters, Barbara McWilliams, Karen B. Jerke and Pamla Hendershot; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Edna Lester.
Alma Vetch
Alma A. Vetch, 71, of Bremerton died Sept. 4, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born June 20, 1928, in Hosmer, S.D., to August and Martha (Wittmeier) Dewald. She was raised and educated in South Dakota.
She married
James Vetch on Feb. 16, 1946, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Mrs. Vetch worked as a waitress at Arctic Lunch, at J.C. Penney Co. for 12 years and as a cashier at Kitsap Federal Credit Union in Keyport before retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Young Ladies Institute at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church and was the president from 1961 to 1962. Along with her family, she was a charter member of Holy Trinity Parish. She also worked with the Camp Fire Boys and Girls and Boy Scouts.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Curtis Vetch of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, Clarence Dewald of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and a sister, Deloris Lindemann of West Fargo, N.D. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jayne.
A rosary will be recited at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with a Mass to follow at 1 p.m. A private graveside service will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Charles Hamilton Jr.
Charles Spurgeon Hamilton Jr., 73, of Poulsbo died Sept. 4, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born March 25, 1926, in Etowah, N.C., to Mona Lee (Thomas) and Charles Spurgeon Sr. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1944.
Mr. Hamilton graduated from IBM computer programmer school, and was a computer programmer for the Navy during World War II and after, from 1944 to 1946.
He worked for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 38 years, and then for Electronic Data Systems for several years before retiring in 1996. He belonged to the Elks of Bremerton, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fleet Reserve, Navy League, Eagles and the Sons of Norway. He was president of Holly Ridge Center and commodore of Bremerton Boat Club.
Survivors include a son, Charles S. Hamilton III of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Valerie Martinson of Poulsbo and Stephanie Hamilton of Bremerton; a sister, Sue Smith of Cottonwood, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Hamilton of Wenatchee and Jamie Hamilton of Seattle.
A visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton, followed by a service at 3 p.m. at the same location. The burial will take place at Miller-Woodlawn cemetery in Bremerton.

Roger Hanson
Roger Dean Hanson, 57, of Belfair died of cardiac arrest Sept. 6, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Dec. 18, 1941, in Seattle to Alvin and Ruth Hanson. He was raised in Bremerton and graduated from West High School in 1960. He later attended Olympic College.
He married
Judith Ann (Duerden) on July 2, 1971, in Tacoma.
Mr. Hanson worked as a nuclear engineer technician at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 29 years, retiring in 1993. He last worked at Hank's Casino in Belfair as a shift manager.
He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Bremerton and Dean of Seattle; five daughters, Tammy Deitch and Shelli Guzman, both of Bremerton, Barbara Kaye of Belfair and Deanna Rice and Jamie Gilke, both of Seattle; a brother, Leonard Hanson of Bremerton; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
An open house memorial for friends and family will be from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday at 3619 Harbel Drive, Bremerton. Mr. Hanson's final resting place will be Honolulu.

Raymond Whitby
Raymond L. Whitby, 88, of Port Orchard died Sept. 4, 1999.
He was born in Newberry, Mich., on Nov. 30, 1910.
Mr. Whitby worked as a shipfitter at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He was a member of the Masonic Order, Franklin Lodge.
Survivors include two sons, Dave of Gig Harbor and Jim of Port Orchard; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
An inurnment service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor.

John Holbrook
Former Bremerton resident John F. Holbrook, 75, of Hoquiam died of cancer Sept. 4, 1999, in Tacoma.
He was born May 19, 1924, in Bremerton to Herbert and Mary (Faulkner) Holbrook. He was raised in Bremerton and graduated from Bremerton High School in 1943.
He married
the former Ella L. Erickson on Feb. 20, 1948, in Bremerton.
Mr. Holbrook served in the Army from 1944 to 1945 in Germany and received a Purple Heart. He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 31 years as a naval architect. He retired in 1988 after 15 years of working for Art Anderson and Associates of Bremerton.
He had belonged to the Humptulips Grange since 1990.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John T. and Terry M., both of Bremerton; a daughter, Elaine M. Burrows of Bremerton; a brother, James of Oregon; a sister, June Fitzwater of Vancouver, Wash.; and eight grandchildren, Tricia Brown, Tom, Brianna and Colleen Burrows and Shannon, Aaron, Adam and Denise Holbrook.
No services are planned. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary Driskill
Mary Elizabeth Driskill, 95, of Bremerton died Sept. 2, 1999, at Crista Shores in Silverdale.
She was born Feb. 18, 1904 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to George and Genevieve (McMichael) Walsh.
She was raised and educated in Breckinridge, Mo., graduating from high school in 1922.
She had worked as a hospital aide, a nanny and a laundress at a boy's boarding school.
She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Legion of Mary. She enjoyed flowers and plants.
She married
Dewey Driskill in Des Moines, Iowa, in June of 1936. He died in 1969.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Luke of Bremerton; two sons, William of Alexandria, Va., and Harold of St. Paul, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Michael and Brian Luke, Suzanne Quinlan, William Driskill II, Timothy Driskill, Christine Perry, Penny Baker, Lisa Zunigo, Jeanne Romero and Heidi Adricula; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton. A rosary will be recited at the chapel at 7 that night.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Wednesday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church at Fifth and Veneta in Bremerton, with burial at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Robert Thatcher
Robert N. Thatcher, 58, of Bremerton died Sept. 2, 1999, at Harrison Hospital from a heart attack.
He was born Feb. 20, 1941, in Minneapolis to Hubert and Helene (Horton) Thatcher. Raised in Valdez, Alaska, he graduated from Anchorage High School in 1959.
He married
Martha Stine on Dec. 11, 1976, at First Christian Church in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1993.
Mr. Thatcher served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1965. Upon his discharge, he took a job at Alaska Railroad. He then worked for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 26 years, retiring as a rigger from Shop 72 in 1993.
An avid fisherman, Thatcher belonged to the Long Lake Bass Club, Peninsula Bassmasters and BASS (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society). Last year, he placed 10th in the state BASS Federation and helped the state to a second-place finish in the western division.
He also was a member of the Elks Club.
Survivors include his companion, Sharon Hamilton of Bremerton; five sons, Chris Thatcher and Jacob Lincoln, both of Bremerton, Talman Welle and Keith Watson, both of Poulsbo, and Dalton Welle of Aberdeen; four daughters, Carol Ridings of Kent, Melinda Euceda of Honduras, and Debbie and Tami Anthony, both of Bremerton; his mother, Helene Thatcher of Poulsbo; two brothers, Dean of Alaska and Frank of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a sister, Lee Ann Johnston of Modesto, Calif.; and six grandchildren, Shannon Welle of Poulsbo, Derek Tyler and Conner Ridings, all of Kent; and Rigoberto and Armond Euceda, both of Honduras.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment
will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
