Rose McDonald
Rose K. McDonald, 92, of Poulsbo died Sept. 2, 1999, at the Martha & Mary Health Care Center.
She was born July 10, 1907, in Kewaunee, Wis., to Adam and Elizabeth Roidt. She was raised in Scio, Ore.
She married
Charles Clyde McDonald Sr. on Sept. 3, 1925, in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Survivors include her son, Charles Clyde Jr. of Poulsbo; two daughters, Helen Hura and June Webster; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles McDonald III.
At her request, no services will be held at this time. Interment
will take place at Port Blakely cemetery, Bainbridge Island.

'Hard Rock' Kleffner
Albert C. "Hard Rock" Kleffner, 88, of Port Orchard died Aug. 31, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Jan. 19, 1911, in Belt, Mont., to John T. and Clara (Bogner) Kleffner. He was raised in Belt.
He married
Helen E. Bozik on Nov. 28, 1942, in San Diego. They came to Port Orchard in 1945.
Mr. Kleffner was in the Navy from 1941 to 1945, serving in the Pacific during World War II. He worked as a wharf builder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 31 years before retiring in 1973. He also did plastering and stucco work on the side.
He was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Port Orchard and Knights of Columbus. He was an usher at St. Gabriel's as well as a member of the Square Steppers and the Harmony Club.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jeanie Bradley of Ravensdale, Wash., Fay McRee of Port Orchard and Joyce Kleffner of Ellsworth, Maine; three brothers; Paul of East Helena, Mont., Leo of Townsend, Mont., and Phillip of Belt, Mont.; four sisters, Laura Yeater of Lompoc, Calif., Christine Armstrong of Missoula, Mont., and Marie Coo and Sister Madeline Kleffner, both of Belt; five grandchildren, Jeff Bradley of Auburn, Jessica Bradley of Portland, Ore., Karen Bergstrom o f Port Orchard and Sean McRee and Denise Obst, both of Seattle; and two great-grandchildren.
A gathering for family and friends will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, followed by a rosary at 6 p.m. The funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel's. Interment
will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Laurance Olsen
Laurance Edward Olsen, 88, died Aug. 29, 1999, in Seattle.
He was born Sept. 2, 1910, in Stonewall, Manitoba, Canada. His family moved to Chicago when he was a boy. In the 1930s he followed his family to Bremerton.
Mr. Olsen worked for the Bremerton Oil Co. during World War II. After the war, he started Kitsap Delivery and operated it until 1949. He worked together with his wife at Marian's Interiors in Bremerton until his retirement in 1990.
He was a member of the Bremerton Kiwanis Club, the Elks Club and the Kitsap Golf and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marian Kathryn Olsen; a son, Ken of Seattle; a daughter, Nancy Hubler of San Diego; a sister, Vera Sample of Tacoma; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A private family memorial service will be held in Seattle.

Robert Smock
Former Bremerton resident Robert Burns Smock, 76, died Sept. 1, 1999, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
He was born Dec. 15, 1922, on Vashon Island.
Mr. Smock served in the Navy during World War II. Following discharge, he joined Peoples Bank and managed the branch in Bremerton from 1981 to 1984. He retired in 1987 after 42 years.
In Bremerton, he was active in the Rotary Club and Bremerton Area Chamber of Commerce, and he served as chairman of the Bremerton school levy effort. He later belonged to the Cross and Crown Lutheran Church in Renton.
Survivors include two sons, Sinclair and Cameron; two daughters, Christie Engel and Patrice Sinclair; and seven grandchildren, Nic, Justin, Jason, Robert, Geoffrey, Alex and Kirsten. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Helene Smock.
A service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Glendale Lutheran Church in Burien.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Mary Driskill
Mary Elizabeth Driskill, 95, of Bremerton died Sept. 2, 1999, at Crista Shores in Silverdale.
She was born Feb. 18, 1904, in Toronto, Canada, to George and Genevieve (McMichael) Walsh. She was raised in Breckinridge, Mo., where she graduated from high school in 1922.
She married
Dewey Driskill in June 1936 in Des Moines, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1969.
Mrs. Driskill worked as a hospital aide, a nanny and a laundress for a boys' boarding school. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, where she belonged to The Legion of Mary.
Survivors include two sons, William T. of Alexandria, Va., and Harold L. of St. Paul, Minn.; a daughter, Jean Luke of Bremerton; 10 grandchildren, Michael and Brian Luke, Suzanne M. Quinlan, William T. Driskill II, Timothy Driskill, Christine Perry, Penny Baker, Lisa M. Zunigo, Jeanne Romero and Heidi M. Adricula; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel. A vigil will be at 7 p.m.
A funeral liturgy will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Lily Werner
Lily Emma Werner, 92, of Bremerton died Sept. 1, 1999, in Port Orchard.
She was born Dec. 31, 1906, in Lucile, Idaho, to Byron Morris and Mary Anna (Baker) Jenkins. She graduated from Whitebird, Idaho, High School.
She married
Egbert Werner on July 19, 1925, in Pullman. He preceded her in death in 1991.
Mrs. Werner was predominantly a homemaker, but worked as a sheetmetal worker at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during World War II.
She was a 50-year member of Crystal Grange, a charter member of Gilberton Community Club, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Reliance Chapter 70), Kansas Jay Hawkers, and the Olympic Genealogical Society.
Survivors include a son, Fred of Bremerton; two brothers, Morris Jenkins of Cle Elum and Wayne Whetstine of Clarkston; a sister, Lydia Belt of Woodinville; three grandchildren, David Werner of Bremerton, Ronald Werner of Olalla and Valerie Fleckner of Belfair; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, also at Lewis Funeral Chapel, followed by a burial at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Mary Martineau
Mary Martineau, 90, of Port Orchard died Sept. 1, 1999, of natural causes.
She was born July 12, 1909, in Taylor, Wash., to Joseph and Leopoldina (Ortin) Blazick. She grew up in Port Orchard and graduated from Union (now South Kitsap) High School.
She married
Joseph Martineau on June 18, 1949, in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Martineau was a homemaker. She belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Bill Martineau of Tampa Bay, Fla.; a daughter, Verna McLean of Port Orchard; a sister, Sophy Erdman of Kodiak, Alaska; four grandchildren, Cherie, Kevin, and Gregg McLean and Glory Blacknall, all of Port Orchard; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A private interment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Virginia Birkland
Elsie "Virginia" Birkland, 81, of Poulsbo died Aug. 30, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born June 4, 1918, in Anaconda, Mont., to Oscar and Elsie Nordquist. She later moved with her family to Bremerton in 1933, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1936.
She married
Simon Birkland in 1950 in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in January 1996.
Mrs. Birkland completed business school in Seattle and worked in various accounting positions in Bremerton. She also worked on her and her husband's family farming business in Poulsbo for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Ole of Chimacum and Arne of Port Orchard; two daughters, Marilyn Maxwell of Poulsbo and Karen Willoughby of Mansfield, Texas; a sister, Maxine Pelkey of Bremerton; and four grandchildren, Kristen and Caroline Maxwell of Poulsbo, Adam Maxwell of Pullman and Maurita Birkland of Mansfield.
A graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.

Robert Johnson
Robert B. Johnson, 73, of Eglon died Aug. 30, 1999, at his home.
He was born Sept. 29, 1925, in Eglon to Franz August and Elizabeth Johnson. He was raised in Eglon, graduating from North Kitsap High School in 1942.
He was married
to Marcia Lund of Eglon from 1950 to 1981. In 1986, he married
Mildred Birkeland. She preceded him in death in 1994.
Mr. Johnson served in the Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1947. Upon discharge, he attended the University of Washington and worked as a longshoreman from 1950 until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union Local 51 in Port Gamble and was a member of the Suquamish Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a past port commissioner of the Port of Eglon.
Survivors include two sons, Richard of Edmonds and Duane of Eglon; a daughter, Sheri Maurer of Eglon; a brother, John G. Johnson of Eglon; a sister, Gertrude Quinn of Shelton; six grandchildren, Chris Murphy of Cottonwood, Ariz., Matt Murphy of Hansville, Luke Maurer and Joshua Johnson of Eglon, Melissa Johnson of Bellingham, and Brenda Maurer of Port Orchard; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Suquamish Congregational United Church of Christ.

Frederick Boquist
Frederick Oscar Boquist, 60, died Sept. 1, 1999, after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 1, 1939, in Burley to Nicholas and Ida Boquist. He graduated from Peninsula High School in 1956.
Mr. Boquist served in the Navy for four years as an electrician. In 1960, he began his career at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as an electrician and later as a nuclear inspector. He retired as a safety inspector in
Code 106 in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Jon of Port Orchard; a daughter, Rhonda Anderson of Olalla; and two grandchildren, Joshua Boquist and Madelyn Anderson.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Haven of Rest Chapel. Inurnment will be at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor.
