Mary Martineau
Mary Martineau, 90, of Port Orchard died Sept. 1, 1999, of natural causes.
She was born July 12, 1909, in Taylor, to Joseph and Leopoldina (Ortin) Blazick. She grew up in Port Orchard and graduated from Union
(now South Kitsap) High School.
She married
Joseph Martineau on June 18, 1949, in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Martineau was a homemaker. She belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Bill Martineau of Tampa Bay, Fla.; a daughter, Verna McLean of Port Orchard; a sister, Sophy Erdman of Kodiak, Alaska; four grandchildren, Cherie, Kevin, and Gregg McLean and Glory Blacknall, all of Port Orchard; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A private interment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Joseph Reid
Former Bremerton resident Joseph Reid, 54, of Graham died Aug. 31, 1999.
He was born June 18, 1945, in Yakima, to Bob and Florence Reid.
Survivors include his wife, Gail L. Reid; three sons, Joseph Jr. of Fife, Thomas of Lakewood and Adam of Graham; three daughters, Christina Krause of Portland, Catherine Dunnihoo of Puyallup and Carolyn Jo Reid of Tacoma; two brothers, Allen of Yakima and Robert of Riddle, Ore.; two sisters, Jean Shaw of Maple Valley and Ruby Harris of Seattle; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at noon Saturday at Hill Funeral Home in Puyallup.
Memorial donations may be made to the Diabetes Association.
Spike Browning
Laurence "Spike" Lee Browning, 53, of Keyport died Aug. 25, 1999, at Madigan Medical Center near Tacoma.
He was born Sept. 9, 1945, in Seattle. His family moved to Poulsbo in 1951, and he graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1963.
Mr. Browning served in the Air Force as a radar technician. He attended Keyport Bible Church and St. Antony's Episcopal in Silverdale, where he volunteered his services for many church-related ministries.
Survivors include his wife, Sophie Browning; two daughters, Adria Browning and Veronica Browning Reid; a grandson, Tyler Reid; his father, Curt; three brothers, Noris, Jon and Curt; and two sisters, Elsie Bjorndahl and Sam Hubbard.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Keyport Bible Church.
John Kemper
John Warren Kemper, 81, of Belfair died Aug. 31, 1999, at Easthaven Villa in Yelm.
He was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Longville, La., to John and Stella Kemper. In 1923, he moved with his family to Longview, where he graduated from high school in 1936. He later went on to Washington State University.
Mr. Kemper worked at the Longview Daily News as sports editor and then went to the Kelso radio station to broadcast all the Kelso High School sports. He later worked as a sports announcer at KGHL in Billings, Mont., where he did the Billings West High School sports. He also announced baseball games for the Billings Mustangs semi-pro team.
He spent 51 1/2 years in the Army during World War II, serving in the Southern Philippines and Western Pacific campaigns. He was a lifetime member of the Kelso Elks, and also was a member of the American Legion and the '23 Club in Longview.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Elsie (Fowler) Kemper; and a brother, Wilbur of Allyn.
Cremation will take place at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Lacey and a private service will be held at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Betty McDade
Betty Jo McDade, 66, of Bremerton died Aug. 30, 1999, at Crista Shores in Silverdale.
She was born Oct. 7, 1932, in Blytheville, Ark., to Robert and Gladys (Ford) Ellis. She was raised and educated in Blytheville.
She married
William McDade on Nov. 13, 1951, in Blytheville.
Mrs. McDade worked in real estate and owned and operated both the Treasure Chest in Belfair and Sunshine Candies & Gifts in Bremerton. She was a certified floral designer. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for many years.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steven of Garden Grove, Calif., Douglas of Manchester and Glen of Orange, Texas; a daughter, Linda Johnson of Silverdale; a brother, Robert Ellis of Blytheville; four grandchildren, Shawn McDade, Atecia Fredrick, Danielle and Kyle Johnson; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Crista Shores in Silverdale. A cremation is taking place at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.

Loretta Rauch
Loretta Therese Rauch, 79, of Kingston died Aug. 30, 1999, at her home.
She was born April 15, 1920, in Seattle, to Anthony and Louise (Zenner) Rauch.
Mrs. Rauch worked as a passport agent for the U.S. Passport Agency in Seattle until retiring in 1989.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, including Tony and Mary Beth Rauch.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Beck's Funeral Home in Edmonds. A Mass will be celebrated at noon on Friday at Corpus Christi Chapel in Edmonds. Interment
will follow at Calvary cemetery in Seattle.
Bruce Covington
Byron "Bruce" Covington, 77, of Bremerton died Aug. 27, 1999, at his home.
He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Lodge Grass, Mont., to Byron and Hope (Saul) Covington. He was raised and educated in Montana.
He married
Elizabeth Forester in May 1966 in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1994.
Mr. Covington served with the Army as a medic in the South Pacific during World War II and the Korean War. He came to Kitsap County in 1960 and worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until retiring. He was a member of the Lincoln Avenue Bible Church.
Survivors include a niece, Karen Gentry of Bremerton; and two nephews, Lynn Emery of Port Angeles and Evan Emery of Montana.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Lincoln Avenue Bible Church in Bremerton.
Harold Pinsch
Harold L. Pinsch, 82, of Bremerton died Aug. 30, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent Center.
He was born April 3, 1917, in Howard, S.D., to Leo and Sarah Pinsch. In 1934, his family moved to Minnesota, and he graduated from Pequot High School in 1935.
He married
Lois Lund of Pequot, Minn., in 1940. In 1943, they moved to Bremerton.
Mr. Pinsch worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a shipfitter. After the war, he and his wife moved to Port Angeles and worked in the logging business until 1950, when they returned to Bremerton, and he again worked for PSNS.
From 1962 until his retirement in 1977, he worked in Code 135, non-destructive testing. In 1979, he formed his own company, NDT Assistance, and he taught NDT classes until selling his company in 1994. He also taught winter mountaineering at Olympic College.
He was a volunteer fire commissioner for District 19 and was a member of Mountain Rescue Assistance. He also was a member of the American Society of Non-destructive Testing and the American Welding Society. He volunteered at senior citizen centers, giving slide shows.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Joyce Magnusson of Enumclaw and Patricia Harrington of Bremerton; a brother Richard of South Gate, Calif.; five sisters, Irene Myres of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Margaret Sarama of Apache Junction, Ariz., Rita Martin of Avon, Minn., and Mary Bertrand and Kathleen Pinsch of Bremerton; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, James Harrington.
Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m.

Alice Burkhardt
Alice Mae Burkhardt, 71, of Port Orchard died of natural causes Aug. 28, 1999, in Port Orchard.
She was born July 9, 1928, in Powers, Ore., to Harold and Cynthy (Persons) Horton. She was raised in Port Orchard and graduated from South Kitsap High School.
She married
Herman F. Burkhardt. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Mrs. Burkhardt worked as a brush picker in the evergreen industry. She was a member of Jewel Rebeccas of Port Orchard.
Survivors include a son, William E. Johnson Sr. of Barberton, Ohio; two brothers, Edward Horton of Port Orchard and Ralph Miller of Barston, Calif.; a sister, Billie A. Pace of Mesquite, Nev.; three grandchildren, William E. Johnson Jr. of North Canton, Ohio, Cynthy Johnson of Seattle and Candy Cronister of Tacoma; and three great-grandchildren.

Joyce Taylor
Joyce Taylor, 66, of Bremerton died of cancer Aug. 31, 1999, at her home.
She was born Sept. 12, 1932, in Centralia, Kan., to Harry and Wilma (Condit) DivelBiss. She graduated from Nampa High School in Nampa, Idaho, in 1950.
She married
George "Bud" Taylor in 1972 in Vancouver, Wash.
Mrs. Taylor worked as a kindergarten teacher in Nampa from 1962 to 1965. She also served as a missionary to Micronesia with Liebenzell Mission from 1989 to 1991. She was a member and elder at Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church, where she served as Stephen minister leader.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Susan Williams of Port Orchard, Linda Wahlquist of Bremerton and Stephanie Vallerge of Spanaway; six grandchildren, Shannon Haven, Jennifer Abare, Annika and Eric Wahlquist and Emily and Ashley Vallerga; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church in Bremerton.

Mark Willey
Mark Craig Willey, 38, of Bremerton died Aug. 26, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Sept. 21, 1960, in Bremerton to Kjar G. and LaVon (Stenquist) Willey. He was raised in Bremerton and graduated from West High School in 1978.
Mr. Willey worked as a computer program analyst at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He was an Eagle Scout, part of the Boy Scout leadership and a member of the Bremerton Symphony Choral and Commodore Computer Club.
Survivors include his parents; a son, Tyler of Poulsbo; two daughters, Christina and Malinda, both of Poulsbo; and three sisters, Kayla of Orem, Utah, Cherylyn Wright of Richland and Janeen Willey of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Silverdale Fourth Ward, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A burial will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton.
