Matthew Svornich
Matthew Jerome Svornich, 82, of Bainbridge Island died Oct. 21, 1999, on Bainbridge Island of Parkinson's disease.
He was born Sept. 16, 1917, on Bainbridge Island to Anton and Mary (Katnich) Svornich). He graduated from Bainbridge High School.
Mr. Svornich started a career as a commercial fisherman at the age of 16. He was self-employed as a commercial fisherman from 1933 until his retirement in the 1970s.
Survivors include three sons, James of Los Angeles and Tom and Paul, both of Bainbridge Island; a daughter, Brenda Bourer of the Cook Islands; a brother, Dominic of Anacortes; a sister, Sylvia Mowrey of Spokane; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, in 1995.
A graveside service is planned for noon Saturday at Point Blakely cemetery on Bainbridge Island. Interment
will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Betty Hipsley
Betty Jane Hipsley, 82, of Bremerton died Oct. 25, 1999, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center. She had lived in Bremerton for the past two years.
She was born July 12, 1917, in Columbus, Ohio, attending high school there.
She had worked as a credit officer for Lazarus Department Store in Columbus.
Survivors include a son, Loren of Bremerton; two grandchildren, Lisa Centracco and Cindy Daniels, both of Florida; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren, and by a daughter, Linda Terrell.
Visitation will be held Thursday at Cook & Son Pallay Funeral Home in Columbus. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday also at Cook & Son Pallay Funeral Home. Local arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
LaVern Borah
LaVern A. Borah, 78, of Port Orchard died Oct. 19, 1999, in Port Orchard of natural causes.
He was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Mount Ida, Wis., to Samuel and Caroline (Allen) Borah. He grew up in Redstone, Mont., graduating from Scobey High School in Scobey, Mont., in 1938, and attending the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Mr. Borah served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. His military honors included the American Campaign Medal, the European, African and Middle Eastern medals, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He married
Georgette M. Fievet on Dec. 19, 1944, in Hastiere, Belgium.
Mr. Borah worked as a transportation mechanic at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1981.
He was a past master of Bremerton Masonic Lodge 206 and an honorary past master of Port Orchard Masonic Lodge 98. He also was a member of Scottish Rite, the Shriner's (Al Aska) and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jim and Dan, both of Tacoma; a daughter, Lillian Crawford of Bremerton; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Bremerton Masonic Lodge 206. Inurnment will take place at Mount Ida Baptist Church cemetery in Mount Ida. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Mindy Lobbett
Mindelle Irene "Mindy" Lobbett, 87, of Port Orchard died Oct. 24, 1999, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard. She had lived in Port Orchard since 1990.
She was born Aug. 17, 1912, in Waynesboro, Pa., to Luther and Nora (Hartzell) Sachs. She grew up in Gettysburg, Pa., graduating from Gettysburg High School.
She graduated from Moravian College for Women in Pennsylvania and from the Cincinatti Conservatory in Ohio. She completed her nurse's training at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. As a registered nurse, she worked in both a surgical and pediatric nursing.
She also gave private lessons in piano, voice, organ and violin throughout her life. She was minister of music at Lakewood First Presbyterian Church in Long Beach, Calif., for many years.
She married
James Watson Lobbett on Sept. 28, 1940, in Middleport, N.Y. He preceded her in death in 1994.
A longtime resident of Long Beach, Mrs. Lobbett was a member of the Long Beach Civic Light Opera, the Music Teachers Association, Lakewood First Presbyterian Church and Mariners, an organization associated with the church. She served as dean of the Organ Guild and participated in the Bach Festival. In Port Orchard, she was an active member of Grace Bible Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael of Port Orchard; a daughter, Susan Hicks of Monrovia, Calif.; four brothers, Rodney Sachs, Ross Sachs and Luther Sachs, all of Pennsylvania, and Robert Sachs of New Hampshire; a sister, Janice Edwards of Florida; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Shannon and Jeff, all of California, and Jackie, Briana and James, all of Washington; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 7:30 p.m. today at Ridgemont Terrace. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Long Beach. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Bernard Brockerman
Bernard William Brockerman, 70, of Seabeck died Oct. 17, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 15, 1928, in Seattle and graduated from Bremerton High School in 1946.
Mr. Brockerman served in the Army during the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal with one bronze star.
He was a mariner, working as a barge foreman for oil barges. He worked for Thea Foss Waterway and Thea Foss Tugs for more than 30 years.
He is survived by two sons, David William Russell of Grants Pass, Ore., and George Glenn Russell of Seabeck; a daughter, Delza Joline Embree of Seabeck; and four grandchildren, Andrea Marie Ramey, Amy Joline Embree, William Douglas Embree and Alexsandra Rozlyn Embree.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Mr. Brockerman's residence in Seabeck. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Clarence Eliason
Former Poulsbo resident Clarence Reinhardt Eliason, 77, died Sept. 29, 1999, in Anchorage, Alaska.
He was born June 6, 1922, as the youngest child of E.J. and Regina Louise Sulheim Eliason. His grandfather was Poulsbo founder Jorgen Eliason.
He spent his early years living above his father's store and post office in downtown Poulsbo, and later moved to his grandfather's farm on Hostmark Street. He graduated from Poulsbo High School in 1940.
In 1945, he married
Shirley Agnes Ball. She preceded him in death in 1996, after 51 years of marriage.
Mr. Eliason worked for the First National Bank of Poulsbo for many years, retiring in 1977. He served as a member of the North Kitsap School Board during the 1960s and later joined the Poulsbo Historical Society.
In 1984, he and his wife moved to Gig Harbor and spent many years traveling. In the summers, Mr. Eliason worked in Valdez, Alaska, at the Hook, Line and Sinker.
Survivors include two sons, David of Kirkland and Arden of Show Low, Ariz.; three daughters, Kay Houghton of Valdez, Janet Strutz of Anchorage and Heidi Eliason of Ketchum, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pacific International Christian Center, 4819 Hunt St., Gig Harbor.

Jessie Graham
Jessie Graham, 87, of Silverdale, died Oct. 23, 1999, in Bremerton.
She was born Nov. 10, 1911.

Bradford Hall
Bradford Eugene Hall, 40, of Port Orchard died Oct. 21, 1999, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
He was born March 13, 1959, in Seattle to Henry and Donna (Holt) Hall. He was raised in Seattle and South Carolina, moving to Port Orchard in 1984.
Survivors include his mother, now of Port Orchard; a brother, Bruce of Chehalis; and a grandmother, Marie Holt of Port Orchard.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1974 and by a brother, Brett, in 1976.
A graveside service is planned for today at 1 p.m. at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard, where he will be inurned. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home in Port Orchard.
Dorothy Carroll
Dorothy Marie Carroll, 92, of Poulsbo died Oct. 23, 1999, at her home.
She was born July 24, 1907, in Madisonville, Ohio, to Ora and Amelia (Pfister) Warman.
She was raised and educated in New Mexico, then moved to California, where she worked as a nurse at Rancho Los Amegis for 17 years. She moved to Washington in 1983 and worked as a homemaker.
She married
Clyde D. Carroll in 1931 in California. He preceded her in death in 1946.
Survivors include twin sons, Don J. of Poulsbo and Dan R. of Redmonds, Ore.; a daughter, Nancy M. Nelson of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Frances Bevan of Auburn, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A service is planned for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, with private interment at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Evelyn Olsborg
Former Poulsbo resident Evelyn Torwick Olsborg, 92, died Oct. 23, 1999, in Seattle.
She was born Sept. 15, 1907, in Seattle. She was raised in Poulsbo and lived there many years.
Later she worked as co-director of volunteers at Ballard Hospital for 20 years.
She and her husband Gunnar were married
70 years ago.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Evelyn Sunderlin of Seattle and Sandra Olsborg of Poulsbo; a sister, Helen Barry; three grandchildren, Jan, Quinn and Marc Sunderlin; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Neil, and by two sisters, Gladys Simpson and Norma Brannin.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1215 Thomas in Seattle. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View cemetery in Poulsbo.

Richard Hower
Richard A. Hower, 59, of Port Orchard died Oct. 9, 1999, at his home.
He was born June 21, 1940, in Bremerton to Robert and Edith (Anderson) Hower and was raised in Kitsap County. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1958.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to '65.
He worked as a sailmaker at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring in 1993.
His mother preceded him in death. He is survived by his father, Robert Hower, and his stepmother, Lillian "Frances" Hower of Port Orchard; a son, Robert of Los Angeles; a daughter, Joan Lehto of Seattle; a brother, Norman of Gig Harbor; and three grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah and Stephen Lehto of Seattle.
A service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard. Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel is handling arrangements.
