Duane Topel
Duane W. Topel, 70, of Bremerton died Oct. 18, 1999, at his home.
He was born Sept. 24, 1929, in Postville, Iowa, to Walter A. and Fern (Evert) Topel. He spent his early years in Monona, Iowa, moving to Port Orchard as a teen.
Mr. Topel served in the Army from 1946 to 1948. He was stationed in Korea.
He and his wife, Dorothy Jane, were married
Nov. 11, 1955, in Port Orchard. She preceded him in death in 1970.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a machinist and progressman, retiring in 1984 after 36 years.
Survivors include his companion, Nadine Bruns of Bremerton; a daughter, Valerie Siegel of McCleary; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Graham of Marysville; two brothers, Ken and Bob, both of Union; two sisters, Carol Cummings of Gig Harbor and Lois Rassmussen of Tacoma; two grandchildren, Stephanie Morrison of Marysville and Angel Smith of Seattle; and three great-grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no formal service. An open house at his home is planned for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Interment
will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
John Orban
Former Bremerton resident John Joseph Orban, 80, of Arlington died Oct. 17, 1999, at his home.
He was born Jan. 3, 1919, in Verona, N.D., to Katherine Theresa Schroedl and Jean Pierre Orban.
Mr. Orban served in the Navy from 1936 to 1956, retiring as a warrant officer. He was stationed aboard USS West Moreland and USS Saratoga.
After his military career, he worked as a draftsman at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1956 until his retirement in 1981.
Survivors include his wife, Susan McGregor; three daughters, Carol Bailey, Elizabeth Reginbal and Anita Bogard; three sisters, Marie Burger, Marguerite Limbrecht and Ernestine Fortwengler; five stepsons, Robert, James, Gerald, David and Gregory Schroedl; four stepdaughters, Rosella Schroedl Gleason, Darlene Schroedl-McKenzie, Rosemary Wade and Marnita Schroedl; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 35 stepgrandchildren; 34 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by a brother, William.
Services are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arlington. Interment
will take place at St. Rose of Lima cemetery in Garretson, S.D. Arrangements are under the direction of Weller Funeral Home in Arlington.
Freddie Compton
Former Bremerton resident Frederick James "Freddie" Compton, 49, of Hillsboro, Ore., died Oct. 18, 1999, in Oregon after a long battle with cancer.
He was born April 22, 1950, in Bremerton to Robert Kenneth and MayBell F. (Nolan) Compton. He grew up in Bremerton, attending Central Kitsap High School.
Mr. Compton served in the Army for three years.
He worked as a carpenter.
He married
Debbie Sue Kienel on April 22, 1985, in Las Vegas.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, MayBell Armstrong; two daughters, Cassandra and Valerie, both of Oregon; two brothers, Lester of Bremerton and Leonard of Oregon; two sisters, Barbara Johnson of Silverdale and Roberta Monroe of Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his father in 1971 and by a brother, Kenneth, in 1972.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro, Ore. A graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at Valley Memorial Park cemetery, 3809 SE Tualatin-Valley Highway in Hillsboro.

Kathleen Vergeer
Kathleen Paige Vergeer, 85, of Bremerton died Oct. 18, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center of complications from a stroke.
She was born Sept. 1, 1914, in Purvis, Miss., to Robert G. and Tina (Davis) Page. She grew up in Mississippi and Oregon.
She married
Gerard S. Vergeer Sr. on March 28, 1934, in Kelso. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Survivors include two sons, Gerard Jr. and Bob, both of Silverdale; a daughter, Carole Pettygrove of Bremerton; three sisters, Sarah Thornburg of Port Angeles, Bonnie Holcomb of Salem, Ore., and Hazel Parton of Portland, Ore.; 10 grandchildren living in the Bremerton area, Texas, New York and Minnesota; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Lance David Egge.
A private family memorial service will be held. Interment
will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Martha Walz
Martha L. Walz, 58, of Bremerton died Oct. 18, 1999, in Bremerton of complications from a long-term illness.
She was born Sept. 11, 1941, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to James H. and Marguerite (Woods) Majors. She grew up in New Orleans.
She married
George J. Walz Sr. on Feb. 9, 1963, in Tustin, Calif.
Mrs. Walz was a homemaker. She was a past member of Bremerton Bible Church and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, George Jr. and Eric, both of Bremerton, Mychal of Fullerton, Calif., and David of Landover, Md.; a daughter, Judith Hall of Keokuk, Iowa; four brothers, Joseph Majors and Larry Majors, both of Las Vegas, and Richard Majors and Curtis Majors, both of Chalmette, La.; five sisters, Sister Margaret Majors of St. Louis, Harriett Rieder of Picayune, Miss., MaryKate Dean of Slidell, La., Ginny Jeffries of Chalmette and Elaine Mancuso of New Orleans; and nine grandchildren, Timothy, Bryan, Stephen, Christopher and Melissa Hall, all of Keokuk, Aelisa and Lydia, both of Landover, and Heather and Anna, both of Silver Springs, Md.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. A memorial service is planned for Oct. 30 at First Baptist Church of Chalmette. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Robert Mulnix
Robert F. Mulnix, 78, of Bremerton died Oct. 17, 1999, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born June 19, 1921, in Bremerton, to Forrest and Ethel Mulnix.
He married
Kathleen Humphrey on April 16, 1943, in Seattle.
Mr. Mulnix served in the Army during World War II and in Korea, retiring as a captain.
He owned and operated Bay Bowling Lanes in Bremerton for more than 50 years.
He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 1181 in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert II of Bremerton; a daughter, Patricia White of Bremerton; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Verhoye.
At his request, there will be no services.

Marjorie Jones
Marjorie C. Jones, 85, of Bremerton died Oct. 17, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born June 21, 1914, in Portland, Ore. She was raised and educated in West Seattle, graduating from West Seattle High School in 1932.
She lived in West Seattle until the early 1970s. She later resided in Copalis Beach, Paradise Bay and Port Townsend before coming to Bremerton in 1997.
She married
Cyril H. Jones in Seattle in 1936. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Larry of Silverdale and Ric of Bainbridge Island; a sister, Dorothy Walmer of Bellingham; and four grandchildren, Shannon Jones Connelly, Bryan, Brady and Ryan.
A private family gathering will take place. Arrangements are by Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Jack Potter
Jack Gene Potter, 65, of Silverdale died Oct. 15, 1999, in Silverdale.
He was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Weatherford, Okla., to Chester and Leova (Sanders) Potter. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., graduating from Banning High School.
Mr. Potter served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He was a staff sergeant stationed in Ulm, Germany.
He married
Rachel Franklin on April 7, 1956, in Long Beach.
Mr. Potter was a field engineer for Northrop for 24 years, later working as a private contractor and builder from 1979 until this year. He attended Olympic College in Bremerton.
He was a deacon at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; his father, now of Silverdale; three daughters, Angela Maier of Grass Valley, Calif., Sheri Kinsey of Silverdale and Sheila of Bremerton; two brothers, Leon of Anaheim, Calif., and Dillard of Bremerton; and eight grandchildren, Amber, Justin and John Maier, Krista Kinsey, Nicholas Kettner and Shain, Natasha and Angelica Perry.
A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Marlie Plummer
Marlyn Ardyth "Marlie" Plummer, 69, of Bremerton died Oct. 15, 1999, at her home.
She was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Marion, N.D. She graduated from Bremerton High School.
She worked as a waitress for more than 20 years at Hearthstone Restaurant in Bremerton and as a salesperson at Arnold's La-Z-Boy for five years.
Survivors include two sons, Dean of Everett and Kevin of Port Orchard; two daughters, Karla Herdman of Bremerton and Gail of Poulsbo; two sisters, Beth Bence of Bremerton and Beverly Coleman of Woodburn, Ore.; two brothers, John McKay of Bremerton and Roger McKay of San Diego; six grandchildren, Tad, Eli, Adam and Hannah Herdman, and Cole and Nolan; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Westpark Christian Church in Bremerton. Arrangements are by Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Noel Evans II
Francis "Noel" Evans II, 65, of Port Orchard died
Oct. 18, 1999, in Port Orchard of natural causes.
He was born May 10, 1934, in Pittsburgh, Calif., to Francis Noel and Florence (DeForce) Evans. He grew up in Berkeley, Calif.
Mr. Evans served in the Navy from 1951 to 1954.
He worked as an insulator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1996.
He married
Charlene Colon on March 17, 1984, in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; six sons, Stacy and Jack, both of Tacoma, Tom, Tim and Fritz Baxter, and Eric Christian, all of Colorado; a daughter, Jayquetta Smith of Vacaville, Calif.; numerous grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services are planned. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
