John Waag
John Berger Waag, 81, of Poulsbo died Oct. 1, 1999, at Northwoods Lodge in Silverdale after a battle with lung cancer.
He was born March 16, 1918, in Weldon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Simon and Anna (Trones) Waag. He attended schools in North Kitsap and graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1938.
Mr. Waag served in the Army Air Corps during World War II from July 1942 to September 1945. He served in the Rhineland, Ardencea, northern France and Normandy. He flew more than 30 missions in Germany and was wounded over Keil Bay on April 9, 1944. He was decorated with the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross.
He married
his childhood sweetheart, the former Edith A. Sund, on July 27, 1945, at Silverdale Methodist Church.
After the war, Mr. Waag was self-employed in the automotive business. He most recently worked for the Kitsap County Road Department, retiring in 1980.
He was a lifelong member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2463 in Poulsbo.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John of Poulsbo and Bill of Longview; five daughters, Bunni Kelly of Seattle, Andrea Rice of Port Ludlow, Vergena Landry of Bellevue, Adele Smith of Bainbridge Island and Aline Smith of Oxnard, Calif.; two sisters, Arna Nicholson of Poulsbo and Thora Ruggeri of Coarsegold, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, Elisa Valentine of Edmonds, Angela and Jaime Kelly, both of Seattle, Jason and Greg Rice, both of Port Orchard, Kim Selembo of Tanzania, Africa, Lindsey Smith of South Africa, Eric, Erin and Chad Waag, all of Poulsbo, Michelle Weeda and Lance Landry, both of Bellevue and Emily and Rebekah Waag, both of Longview; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Austa Nickell.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel, in Poulsbo. A private family service will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Edith McClure
Edith A. McClure, 93, of Port Orchard died of natural causes Oct. 2, 1999, in Port Orchard.
She was born Jan. 10, 1906, in Lansford, N.D., to Edward and Anna (Johanason) Iverson. She was raised in Lansford, graduating in 1924 from Blaine Consolidated High School in Lansford. She attended business college in Grand Forks, N.D.
Mrs. McClure taught school in North Dakota and Washington state before going to work for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.
She married
Lee McClure in 1949 in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1970.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Louise Walker of Port Orchard, and a sister, Margaret Ortman of Port Orchard.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ivery, Marvin and Bert.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rill Chapel. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, also at Rill Chapel. Interment
will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard following the service.
Pat Rosentangle
Chester Frank "Pat" Rosentangle, 91, of Port Orchard died of natural causes Oct. 3, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Nov. 29, 1907, in Pe Ell to Frank and Bernice (Pawelska) Rosentangle. He was raised and educated there, graduating from Pe Ell High School.
Mr. Rosentangle was manager of Callison's Evergreen Co. plant in Port Orchard, retiring in 1969.
Survivors include a son, Gary of Chico; a foster son, John Hauschild of Port Orchard; six grandchildren, Curt and Beth Rosentangle, both of Chico, Susan Bradford of Alaska, Lorraine Mahaffey of Honolulu, Sharon Stephens of Port Orchard and Chester Hauschild of Bremerton; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, in 1969.
No services are scheduled. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel, Port Orchard.
Joseph Sheridan
Joseph A. Sheridan, 87, of Port Orchard died Oct. 4, 1999, at Ridgemont Terrace Convalescent Center in Port Orchard.
He was born June 13, 1912, in Cherokee, Iowa, to John and Agnes (O'Meara) Sheridan. He graduated from Cherokee High School and attended two years at St. Mary's Junior College in Cherokee.
In 1938, he moved to California. He married
the former Violet B. Kloth on Oct. 31, 1942, in Visalia, Calif.
He supervised construction of farm labor camps in California and Arizona and was supervisor of Baywood Park Water District in California for 15 years, retiring in 1962. He was a member of the Death Valley '49ers in Baywood Park.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Michael of Atascadero, Calif., John of Enumclaw and James of Port Orchard; a daughter, Joanna Barfield of South Carolina; a brother, Edward of Long Beach, Calif.; and seven grandchildren, Stephen Gibbs and James, Michael, Kelly, Tammy, Jamie and Heather Sheridan. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Clifford and Wilbur.
A private family service will take place. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel, Port Orchard.

Walter Sabol
Walter J. Sabol, 79, of Olalla died Oct. 2, 1999, at his home.
He was born Nov. 4, 1919, in Akron, Ohio, to Andrew and Susie Sabol. He was raised in Akron and Kent, Ohio.
Mr. Sabol served in the Air Force. He worked for Lockheed, retiring in 1956.
He and the former Lillian Engstrom were married
Aug. 18, 1945.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Andrew of Malibu, Calif., and Michael of Buena Park, Calif.; two daughters, Suzanne Sabol of Rochester, N.Y., and Elizabeth Saki of Lake Forest, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Peter Jensen-Sabol and Geoffrey Saki.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fraola cemetery, 6456 Mullinex Road SE.

Merle Kougl
Merle M. Kougl, 91, of Bremerton died at Harrison Hospital on Sept. 28, 1999.
She was born Dec. 24, 1907, in Butte, Mont., to Abraham and Jessie Steele. She lived as a child in Grand Forks, Mont., and Vancouver, British Columbia.
She worked as a secretary for a California insurance company and also as a secretary and accountant for the Seattle School District.
She married
John Kougl, who died in 1990.
Survivors include her sister, Jessie Sikora of Maple Ridge, British Columbia; her stepson, Eugene Kougl of Bremerton; and two stepdaughters, Leila Pierce of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Bonita Hickok of Lynnwood.
A visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home in Bremerton, followed by a graveside service there at 2 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Avenue Bible Church in Bremerton. Memorial donations can be made to that church.
Gladys Hagar
Gladys Oleita Hagar, 96, of Bremerton died there Oct. 1, 1999.
She was born in Josephine County, Ore., to George and Susan (Everton) Griffin on Oct. 5, 1902. She was raised in Grants Pass, Ore., where she attended high school. She graduated from Heald's Business College in Sacramento, Calif., in 1923.
She married
Robert Hagar in Grants Pass on Nov. 26, 1925. He died in 1994.
She was a member of the Traveler's Aid Society during World War II, assisting incoming military families with housing and other needs. She and her husband were founding members of the Navy Yard City Bible Church, and she was a longtime member of the Westside Garden Club.
She is survived by a son, Marvin, of Troy, Idaho; a daughter, Darlene Casteel of Shelton; a brother, Merle Griffin of Canby, Ore.; a sister, Alma Fairfield of Grants Pass; five grandchildren, Dan Hagar of Belfair, Kathy Ungren of Bremerton, Robert Casteel of Lynnwood and Vivianne Briley and Evelyn Novick, both of Shelton; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home in Bremerton. Memorial donations can be made to Navy Yard City Bible Church.
Gordon Blanchard
Gordon Springstead Blanchard, 84, of Southworth died Sept. 25, 1999, in Seattle of a brain aneurism.
He was born Dec. 6, 1914, in Skagway, Alaska, to Alex and Olive Blanchard. He grew up there and attended Skagway High School.
Mr. Blanchard served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Medal.
He married
his wife, Lois, in Skagway on Nov. 17, 1967.
He worked on the White Pass and Yukon Route railroads for more than 30 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Eagles FOE 25 and the Elks Club BPOE 431.
Mr. Blanchard is survived by his wife;
four sons, Brian Blanchard of Skagway, Mike McKelvy of Ketchikan, Alaska., Harold Keith of Ketchikan, Alaska., and Ron Keith of Mont.; two daughters, Susan McKinley of Sacramento, Calif., and Kristine Skaflestad of Hoonah, Alaska.; one brother, Douglas of British Columbia; and 15 grandchildren.
A private service will be held at the Blanchard home.
Inurnment will be handled by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
Leota Anthony
Leota A. Anthony, 83, of Poulsbo died Sept. 29, 1999, in Poulsbo.
She was born June 24, 1916, in Seattle to Milo and Zelia (Sigo) Peck, growing up in California. She was the grandniece of Chief Sealth and a member of the Suquamish Tribe.
She graduated from the Sherman Institute Indian School in Riverside, Calif., and from Canoga Park High School in Canoga Park, Calif., in 1934. She attended two years of college in California.
She married
John Franklin Anthony in Los Angeles in 1945. He preceded her in death Feb. 18, 1982.
During World War II, she worked in assembly for Douglas Aircraft Co. in California. After the war, she worked for Thrifty Drugs in California's San Fernando Valley for 18 years as a manager, training employees.
She retired in 1966. In 1978, she and her husband moved to Poulsbo where she became very active with the Suquamish Tribal Council, serving as treasurer for the council for 12 years, working with educational programs for children and helping to establish the Suquamish Museum.
She was also a Vista volunteer, a member of Kingston Christian Church, St. Peter's Catholic Church, the Eagles and the Sons of Norway.
Survivors include a son, Bruce of Poulsbo; two grandchildren, Bryan of Indianola and Marc of Reno, Nev.; and three great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl Peck, Eugene Peck, John Peck and Milo Peck Jr., and by a sister, Edna Luedtke.
A graveside service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Suquamish Tribal cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Suquamish Tribal Center, 15838 Sandy Hook Road in Poulsbo. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, "The Stone Chapel."
