Alice Stevens
Alice Cora Johnson Stevens, 90, of Silverdale died Nov. 17, 1999, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
She was born Dec. 6, 1908, in the Pearson community of Central Kitsap, to Jacob and Anne Ringness. She was raised and educated in the Central Valley of Kitsap County.
She grew up on her family's dairy farm and was involved in owning and operating the farm throughout her life.
She married
Ernest M. Stevens on May 29, 1948, at Central Valley Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death in 1992.
Mrs. Stevens was a member of Ladies of Elks, Bremerton Lodge 1192, Silverdale Lutheran Church and the Kitsap County Dairy Wives Association.
Survivors include a son, Donald Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.; a daughter, Dolores Helstrom of Silverdale; four sisters, Ruth Olsen and Agnes Berg, both of Bremerton, and Alma Berg and Mildred Frazier, both of Silverdale; four grandchildren, Cynthia Vaughn of Nashville, Debbie Harp of Poulsbo, Terri Parris of Atlanta and Tina Helstrom of Silverdale; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Oscar, and a sister, Gina.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at Silverdale Lutheran Church. Private interment will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Margaret Vancura
Margaret Ann Vancura, 73, of Bremerton died Nov. 13, 1999, at her home.
She was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Centralia, to Gene and Dew Cherry. She grew up in Portland, Ore.
She married
Charles J. Vancura. He preceded her in death in 1976.
Mrs. Vancura was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, James of Klamath Falls, Ore.; three daughters, Susan Cherry of Cataula, Ga., and formerly Bremerton, Carol "Gigi" Butler of Silverdale and Vivian Finlay-Boyer of Wasilla, Ark.; 11 grandchildren, Michael Burnett of Kodiak, Alaska, Charles Burnett of San Francisco, Charlene Alford of Cataula, Sara Smothers of the U.S. Air Force in England, Margaret Hope of Olympia, Nikki Cherry of Bremerton, Jennifer of Portland, Ore., and Christopher, Amy, Cassandra and Melissa, all of Klamath Falls.; and 11 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Cherry, and by a son, Charles Vancura II in 1992.
A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Dec. 4 at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

David Haynes II
David G. Haynes II, 20, of Port Orchard died Nov. 17, 1999, in Port Orchard.
He was born May 8, 1979, in Jacksonville, Fla. He grew up in San Diego.
He was a member of Sinister Creations Car Club.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Debra and Greg Henderson of Olalla; a son, David Haynes III; a sister, Lindsay Haynes of Port Orchard; and his grandparents, Kathryn Davis of San Diego and Pauline Haynes of Vidalia, Ga. He was preceded in death by his father, David Haynes.
Visitation is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment
will follow the service at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

John Mitchell
John Henry Mitchell, 76, of Suquamish died Nov. 13, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Aberdeen to James and Isabel (Fosha) Mitchell. He grew up in Eastern Washington and in Kitsap County, attending school in Bremerton.
Mr. Mitchell served in the Army from 1943 to 1945. He was a heavy-machine driver, stationed in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France, Ardennes and the Rhineland.
He was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Mitchell had been an emergency medical technician and ambulance driver in California. He was given a heroism award for saving the life of a patient in the ambulance when a car hit the ambulance.
More recently, he worked as a painter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Shop 72 for 13 years, retiring in 1989.
He married
Portia L. Brummet on Oct. 8, 1958, in Oakland, Calif.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Stanford of Suquamish, Victor of Chico, Calif., and Michael of Spokane; five daughters, Karen Simms of Missoula, Mont., Gayl Alexander of Port Orchard, Christy of Richmond, Va., Nancy McCord of Seattle and Sharon of California; two brothers, Bill and Chuck, both of Seabeck; three sisters, Margaret Crenshaw of Magalia, Calif., Pearl Purl of Port Orchard and Shirley DeWald of Port Angeles; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lee, in 1973 and by a daughter, Sue, in 1969.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Mandi Lee
Amanda Leigh "Mandi" (Scott) Lee, 33, of Port Orchard died Nov. 5, 1999, of complications of multiple sclerosis.
She was born Jan. 26, 1966, in Fort Ord, Calif., to Glenn and Jacqueline (Shaw) Scott. She graduated from Nampa High School in Nampa, Idaho, in 1984, excelling in debate and English.
She had worked as an executive secretary until her health would not allow her to continue. She also volunteered with the elderly in nursing homes and with the physically and mentally handicapped.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include her husband, Steven of Seattle; two daughters, Ehryn and Alysn; her parents of Nampa; three sisters, Lara, Katrina and Sara; and two brothers, Matthew and Mark.
A funeral service took place Nov. 9 at the Canyon State LDS Chapel in Nampa with burial at Kohlerlawn cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Alsip Funeral Home in Nampa.

Bonnie Sewell
Bonnie D. Sewell, 71, of Port Orchard died Nov. 13, 1999, at her home.
She was born July 6, 1928, in Omaha, Neb., to Clarence and Blanche (Boettger) Phalen. She grew up in Omaha, graduating from North High School there. She moved to Kitsap County in the early 1940s.
She worked as an escrow officer for Park Shore Realty in Port Orchard.
She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Coleman of Shelton.

Willard Wilson
Willard Wilson, 81, of Bremerton died Nov. 15, 1999, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard.
He was born March 26, 1918, in Billings, Mont. He grew up in Ballard, graduating from Ballard High School.
He married
Lorraine Heyer on Feb. 10, 1942, in Seattle. She preceded him in death in 1981.
Mr. Wilson worked as a machinist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Shop 31 for more than 30 years. He was retired.
He was a member of the Machinists Union, the Elks of Bremerton and the Gold Mountain Golf Club.
Survivors include two sons, Randal of Portland, Ore., and Gregory of Port Orchard; a sister, Gladys Rice of Grants Pass, Ore.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Stephen Olsen Jr.
Stephen Christopher Olsen Jr., 31, of Silverdale died Nov. 11, 1999, aboard USS Sacramento in the Indian Ocean.
He was born June 4, 1968, in Yakima to Stephen C. and Susan J. (Anderson) Olsen Jr. He was a 1986 graduate of East Valley High School in Yakima.
Mr. Olsen had served in the Navy since 1987. He was stationed aboard USS Sacramento at the time of his death.
He was an SOS Outreach counselor, a SAVI counselor and a Navy career counselor. He had been a recipient of the Navy League Award.
He married
Michelle Jemison on Dec. 6, 1992, in San Diego.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nicole of Silverdale; his mother and stepfather, Sue and Al Butler of San Diego; four brothers, Stacy Butler of San Diego, and Christopher, Rocky and Michael Olsen, all of Olympia and Stacy Butler of San Diego; and a sister, Penny Harris of Issaquah.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 9 a.m. Monday at the chapel on the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor. A graveside service and burial with full military honors will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.
Retta Cleaver
Retta M. Cleaver, 89, of Poulsbo died Nov. 16, 1999, at her home.
She was born Aug. 21, 1910, in Chanute, Kan., where she was raised and educated. She lived most of her life in Chanute, moving to Poulsbo eight years ago.
She married
Clarence R. Cleaver on April 12, 1930, in Erie, Kan. He preceded her in death in 1976.
Mrs. Cleaver was a homemaker. She had been an active member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Chanute.
Survivors include a son, Willis of Poulsbo; a sister, Fern Lomaster of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
A graveside committal service will be held at Elmwood Memorial Park in Chanute. Local arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.
Henry Austin
Henry O'Neil Austin, 76, of Allyn died of natural causes Nov. 10, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma.
He was born May 16, 1923, in Bremerton to William and Rhoda (Campbell) Austin. He grew up in Allyn, graduating from Irene S. Reed High School in Shelton in 1942. He attended Olympic College and completed a machinist apprenticeship at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1952.
Mr. Austin served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 as a machinist's mate second class. He was stationed in China, in Leyte, Philippines, aboard the LST-514 and aboard the USS Midas.
His military honors included the Atlantic Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with star and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
He worked as a machinist at PSNS for many years, retiring in 1972.
He married
Barbara Johnston on Sept. 9, 1967, in Elma.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Belfair, a past member of the Elks in Bremerton and the Eagles in Belfair. He had been a Boy Scout leader and a member of the school board in Belfair.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Henry and Stephen, both of Tacoma, Dannie of Bothell and Charles of Seattle; a daughter, Norma Jean of California; three stepsons, Howard Harris of Tacoma, Gilbert Harris of Shelton and John Harris of Montesano; a stepdaughter, Sally Simons of Grapeview; a brother, John of Bremerton; two sisters, Nelda Scherfenberg of Bremerton and Mary Lindsey of Allyn; three grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and William, and by two sisters, Mildred King and Norma Jean.
At his request, there will be no funeral service. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Allyn Baptist Church. Inurnment will take place in the Rose Section of Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
