Red Holmes
Phillip "Red" Holmes, 89, of Bremerton died Nov. 6, 1999, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bremerton after a brief illness.
He was born Aug. 2, 1910, in Hoisington, Kan., to Albert B. and Nettie P. (Tilton) Holmes. He grew up in Horace, Kan., and Tribune, Kan.
He married
Edna M. Ruhs on June 25, 1933, in Syracuse, Kan. The couple moved to Bremerton in 1942.
Mr. Holmes was a certified mechanic. He owned Red's Repair Shop in Bremerton since 1951.
He was an active member of the International Auto Mechanics Union, holding the office of sentinel, serving as a former board member for auto mechanic apprentices and as an auto mechanic instructor. He was also a member of the Kansas Club.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Phillip of Marysville and Stan of Bremerton; a daughter, Roseanne Holmes Overboe of Oxnard, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Sheryl, Steven and Cindy, all of Marysville, Dennis of Arlington, Michael Overboe of Villa Park, Ill., Celeste Overboe Dorsey of New York City and GayLene Holmes McDaniel of Tacoma; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Private family services will be held. Inurnment will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Craig Helmholz
Craig Steven Helmholz, 25, a resident of Port Orchard for the past four years, died Nov. 7, 1999, in Seattle.
He was born Sept. 3, 1974, in the Gig Harbor area, where he grew up.
Mr. Helmholz was a resident firefighter for Kitsap County Fire District 7. He also was a certified emergency medical technician.
Survivors include his parents, Carol and Steven Helmholz of Fox Island; a sister, Kimberly Schreder of Tacoma; a brother, Chad of Gig Harbor; his grandmother, Ione Rapp of Tacoma; and his great-grandmother, Rose Pryor of Tacoma.
A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Haven of Rest Chapel, Highway 16, in Gig Harbor. Interment
will take place at Haven of Rest Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Elizabeth Smith
Elizabeth S. Smith, 78, of Bremerton died Nov. 5, 1999, at her home.
She was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Frederick and Elizabeth (Hunter) Simpson. She grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from high school there in 1939.
She married
William F. Smith on May 30, 1951, in St. Charles Church in Brooklyn. They lived in the New York area until moving to Hawaii in 1965. From there, they moved to Bremerton in 1989.
Mrs. Smith worked as the executive secretary for the vice president of Socony Oil Co. While in Hawaii, she was a librarian for the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Hawaii for 11 years.
She was active in the Episcopal Church and was a member of the Sons of Norway.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, William F. Smith Jr. of Bremerton and Jeffrey E. Smith, M.D., of Warner Robbins, Ga.; a brother, Frederick Simpson of Valley Stream, N.Y.; and six grandchildren, Sean J., Aaron E., Justin W., Matthew J., Ryan F. and Rachel E.
A visitation for family and friends will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Hugh's Episcopal Church in Allyn.
Cremation will be at Cherry Grove Memorial Park with inurnment at St. Hugh's Episcopal Church Memorial Garden.
Edward Bartolat
Edward Peter Bartolat, 87, of Grapeview and a Tacoma resident for nearly 50 years, died Oct. 26, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Dec. 13, 1911, in Great Falls, Mont., to Joseph and Anna (Jankovich) Bartolatz.
Mr. Bartolat served in the U.S. 11th Horse Cavalry during the 1930s.
He taught welding and blueprint reading at Bates Technical College in Tacoma during World War II, and from 1968 to 1973 at the Washington State Corrections Center in Shelton.
A member of the Paul Bunyan Rifle and Pistol Team, Mr. Bartolat won many awards in pistol matches in the 1950s. He was a founding member of the Tacoma Trail Cruisers, a member of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association and a member of square dance organizations.
Mr. Bartolat and his wife moved to Stretch Island in 1966, reviving a vineyard there. He served as Fire Protection Commissioner for District 3 in Mason County from 1971 to 1975. The Bartolats were honored as grand marshals of the 1996 Grapeview Day Parade.
He is survived by his wife, Olga; a daughter, Vilma Louie of Grapeview; a son Edward of Shelton; and two sisters, Agnes Iversen of California and Mary Hayduke of Colorado. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Albert and Lawrence, and by a sister, Sophie.
At his request there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made in his name to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma.
Ben Manchion
Ben Earl Manchion, 82, of Bremerton died Nov. 1, 1999, at his home.
He was born Feb. 20, 1917, in Kansas City, Kan., to Frank and Jessie (Roddy) Manchion. He grew up in Kansas City.
Mr. Manchion served in the Army infantry from 1944 to 1946, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He was stationed in Luzon in the Philippine Islands and in Japan.
He married
Gudlaug Thordardottir on Dec. 4, 1948, in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Mr. Manchion was a power plant controller at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the Eagles and American Legion Post 68, both in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ben of Bremerton; three daughters, Jessie Fowler, Elizabeth Almond and Margret Mountjoy, all of Bremerton; a brother, Edward of Kansas; a sister, Frances Gravatt of Kansas; nine grandchildren, Craig and Christopher Fowler, Eric and Janel, William and Marlene McClendon, Andrea Almond and Chad and Benjamin Mountjoy; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marlene.
A private memorial service is planned. Arrangements are under the direction Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Alvin Olson
Alvin Milton Olson, 80, of Kingston died Oct. 30, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Valley City, N.D., to Gust and Josephine (Jacobson) Olson. He was raised and educated in Valley City.
He married
Mavis G. Northall on May 8, 1948, in Dordon, near Tamworth, Staffordshire, England.
Mr. Olson served in the Army from April 1941 to January 1949, attaining the rank of sergeant and working as a telephone and telegraph lineman. He was stationed in Normandy, northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes in France and in Central Europe.
He is said to have been a jack of all trades. After the war, he worked for the electric company in Fargo, N.D., reading meters. In 1951, he and his wife moved to Spokane where he was an oiler for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
In 1963, the couple moved to Seattle where Mr. Olson worked for various sawmills in the Puget Sound area. He became a meter reader for Seattle City Light in 1976, taking on a second job with the Seattle School District as a custodian and later working as a custodian with Shoreline Community College. He retired from Seattle City Light and Shoreline Community College in 1985.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Karen Burton of Shoreline; a brother, Vernon of Fargo; and two grandchildren, Nathan of Kingston and Martha Olson-Wade of Shoreline.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Marvin Grevstad
Former Olalla resident Marvin James Grevstad, 51, of Seattle died of natural causes Oct. 25, 1999, at his home.
He was born Jan. 1, 1948, in Bremerton to Marvin and Edna Grevstad. He grew up in Olalla, graduating from South Kitsap High School. He attended college in Bellingham and Ellensburg for four years.
Mr. Grevstad was coordinator for audit, monitoring and grants for the Seattle-King County Private Industry Council.
He is survived by his mother, now of Port Orchard; and two sisters, Louise of Edmonds and Sandra Ashlock of Port Orchard.
'Bunny' Oien
Helen Bernadine "Bunny" Oien, 84, of Bremerton died Oct. 31, 1999, in Bremerton.
She was born in Cando, N.D., on Nov. 6, 1914, and was adopted by Martin and Mabel (Benson) Thompson six days later. She grew up in Minot, N.D., graduating from Minot High School in 1932.
She attended Minot State Teachers College for two years. She was a member of Sigma Delta Sorority and Alpha Psi Omega National Dramatic Fraternity.
She married
Lloyd M. Johnson on July 7, 1935, in Minot. In 1943, the Johnson family moved to Snohomish, where Mrs. Johnson was active in PTA, Campfire and Boy Scout councils, as well as the Snohomish Federated Lady Lions.
The Johnsons moved to Bremerton in 1951, owning Sonotone Hearing Aid Co. until Mr. Johnson's death in 1961. Mrs. Johnson then worked for the Kitsap County auditor's office as county supervisor of motor vehicles until her retirement in 1974.
She married
Karl Oien in November 1973. He preceded her in death in 1988.
She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Eagles Auxiliary 192, Ladies of Elks 1181, the Sons of Norway Ladies Club, the Retired Eagles Activity Club, Esther Circle and the Irene Greenleaf Orthopedic Guild.
Survivors include a son, Nile of Bonita, Calif.; a daughter, Kay Johnson of Bremerton; her twin sister, Charlotte Tinnell of Spring Hill, Kan.; six grandchildren, Darin and Tal, both of Bremerton, Jeff Cammack of Vancouver, Wash., Greg Cammack of California and Jami and Zane, both of Bonita; and five great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Merry Cammack.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Nov. 13 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

Martha Adams
Martha Alice Adams, 91, of Port Orchard died Nov. 3, 1999, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard.
She was born Jan. 24, 1908, in Satsop to W.H. and Emma (Goddell) Norman. She grew up in Oakville, graduating from Oakville High School in 1926.
She married
James L. Adams on Oct. 19, 1926, in Chehalis. He preceded her in death in 1992.
Mrs. Adams was secretary to the principal at Orchard Heights Elementary School in Port Orchard for 22 years, retiring in 1968.
She was a member of Colby United Methodist Church, Mystic Rebekah Lodge 168 (since 1937), Harper Study Club (for 20 years), the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was also a longtime member of Business and Professional Women in Port Orchard.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Folden of Gladstone, Ore.; a brother, Orval Norman of Harrisburg, Ore.; a sister, Hazel Bergh of Olympia; two grandchildren, Marta Torresan of Port Orchard and Eric Folden of Vancouver, Wash.; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Norman, in 1977.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Colby United Methodist Church. Private inurnment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
