David Pinkerton
David D. Pinkerton, 59, of Port Orchard died Nov. 3, 1999, in Bremerton of natural causes.
He was born Nov. 12, 1939, in San Diego to Albert and Dorothy (Henley) Pinkerton. He grew up in the South Bay area of San Diego County, attending Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach, Calif.
Mr. Pinkerton served in the Navy from 1956 to 1962.
He married Daulene Schroeder in Belfair in 1963.
He was a painter general foreman at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 32 years, retiring in 1993.
Mr. Pinkerton was a member of First Baptist Church of Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Darren and Dion, both of Port Orchard; two sisters, Janice Hamilton of DeBeque, Colo., and Anita of Maryland; and a grandson, Tyler of Port Orchard. He was preceded in death by a son, Sam.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church of Port Orchard. Private inurnment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Mary Lou Brennan
Mary Lou Brennan, 70, of Bainbridge Island died Nov. 3, 1999, in Seattle.
She was born May 23, 1929, in Anaconda, Mont. She attended Bellevue High School and the University of Washington, where she was a member of Kappa Delta.
She and her husband, Tom, moved to Bainbridge Island in 1957. They were active members in many island organizations and causes, including the PTA, the Island Orthopedic Guild and Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle. Mrs. Brennan was also a volunteer at Bloedel Reserve.
Survivors include her mother, Loretta Bessor of Bainbridge Island; a son, T.J. of Indianola; two daughters, Terri of Manhattan, N.Y., and Kelly Mooney of Kirkland; and four grandchildren, Tyler and Bryce Mooney and Mac and Reilly. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998.
A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island. Burial will follow at Port Madison cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to a cancer research foundation of the donor's choice.

Nial Jones
Nial Eugene Jones, 65, of Port Orchard died Oct. 31, 1999, at his home.
He was born March 3, 1934, in Crooksville, Ohio, to Denver and Okel (Wyatt) Jones. He attended high school in Bremerton.
Mr. Jones served in the Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954, stationed at Camp Lejeune with the Eighth Engineers. He received the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a welder in Shop 26 from 1961 until his retirement in 1991.
He married Sue C. Snyder on April 6, 1964, in Lewiston, Idaho.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, Okel Duke of Bremerton; two sons, Douglas of Gainesville, Fla., and Darryl of Port Orchard; a daughter, Tamara Treick of Auburn; a brother, Butch Duke of Bremerton; and a granddaughter, Nichole of Rogue River, Ore.
Visitation was held Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. today, also at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County, P.O. Box 3416, Silverdale, WA 98383-3416.

Don Oborn
Don R. Oborn, 81, a resident of Port Orchard since 1992, died Oct. 2, 1999, at Port Orchard Care Center of lung cancer.
He was born Oct. 1, 1918, in Havre, Mont. He moved to Tacoma in 1952, attending Shelton High School.
Survivors include a son, Roger of Lynnwood; a daughter, Judi Nowka of Port Orchard; and four grandchildren, Heather Nowka of Port Orchard, Scott of Seattle, Lisa of Lynnwood and Ron and Kim; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held Oct. 10.

Helen Thies
Helen H. Thies, 85, of Bremerton died Oct. 31, 1999, in Slidell, La., of heart disease.
She was born Aug. 21, 1914, in Buchanan, N.D., to Henry and Harriett (Radtke) Telken. She was raised on the family farm in North Dakota, graduating from Buchanan High School.
She married Herman E. Thies on April 12, 1944, in Jamestown, N.D. The couple lived on Mr. Thies' farm in South Dakota before moving to Bremerton in 1953.
Mrs. Thies worked as a cook at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton for more than 20 years, retiring at age 65. Previously, she was a cook at Horton's Nursing Home.
Survivors include a son, Melvin of Bremerton; a daughter, Clarice Stumbo of Slidell; four brothers, Charlie Telken and James Telken, both of Jamestown, N.D., Lloyd Telken of Renton and Ed Telken of Orting; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992.
Services were held Wednesday in Louisiana. Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Interment icon will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Joanne Peters
Joanne Patricia Peters, 72, of Indianola died Oct. 31, 1999, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton of cancer.
She was born May 10, 1927, in Seattle to George and Grace Bakken. She grew up in Seattle, graduating from Franklin High School there in 1945.
She married Jack Peters on Aug. 25, 1954.
Mrs. Peters was a manager in the King County comptroller's office in Seattle, retiring in 1982, after 26 years of employment.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Todd of Spokane; three daughters, Gena Wales of Bremerton, Sharon Shinabarger of Enumclaw and Cecily Gilbert of Woodinville; eight grandchildren, Ryan and Conner Wales, both of Bremerton, Kim Daigle and Patrice Shinabarger, both of Enumclaw, Tom Shinabarger of Seattle, and Allison, Bradley and Christopher Gilbert, all of Woodinville; and three great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Indianola Clubhouse. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Verna Brown
Verna E. Brown, 96, of Bremerton died Nov. 1, 1999, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
She was born June 8, 1903, in Lahays, Kan., to Frank and Bessie (Katlin) Dedoyard. She grew up in Bremerton.
She married William Brown on Aug. 29, 1921, in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Brown worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 41 years, retiring in 1960.
She was a member of Ladies of Elks 1181, in Bremerton. She was a past president of the Bremerton Council of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include two nieces, LaVern Boice and Maxine Dedoyard.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Edward Bartolat
Edward Peter Bartolat, 87, of Grapeview and a Tacoma resident for nearly 50 years, died Oct. 26, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Dec. 13, 1911, in Great Falls, Mont., to Joseph and Anna (Jankovich) Bartolatz.
Mr. Bartolat served in the U.S. 11th Horse Cavalry during the 1930s.
He taught welding and blueprint reading at Bates Technical College in Tacoma during World War II, and from 1968 to 1973 at the Washington State Corrections Center in Shelton.
A member of the Paul Bunyan Rifle and Pistol Team, Mr. Bartolat won many awards in pistol matches in the 1950s. He was a founding member of the Tacoma Trail Cruisers, a member of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association and a member of square dance organizations.
Mr. Bartolat and his wife moved to Stretch Island in 1966, reviving a vineyard there. He served as Fire Protection Commissioner for District 3 in Mason County from 1971 to 1975. The Bartolats were honored as grand marshals of the 1996 Grapeview Day Parade.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Vilma Louie of Grapeview; a son Edward of Shelton; and two sisters, Agnes Iversen of California and Mary Hayduke of Colorado. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Albert and Lawrence, and by a sister, Sophie.
At his request there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made in his name to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma.

Samuel Linden
Samuel Linden, 94, of Bremerton died Oct. 31, 1999, at his home.
He was born Feb. 26, 1905, in Hallstaham-mar, Sweden, to Johannes and Anna (Nilsson) Linden. He grew up in Sweden, coming to America in 1927.
He married Alice Carlson on April 2, 1938, in Seattle.
In 1931, Mr. Linden joined the Carpenter's Union in Seattle and later transferred his membership to the Bremerton chapter, becoming a lifetime member. He worked as a carpenter for Miller Construction in Bremerton until 1945, when he bought the company, naming it Linden Construction Co.
He owned the company from 1945 to 1970, working throughout the West Sound region.
His company was responsible for building Crown Hill Elementary School in Bremerton, the Salvation Army building on Sixth Avenue in Bremerton, Brownsville Elementary School, Mission Covenant Church in Bremerton, Bainbridge Island Elementary School, View Ridge Elementary School in Bremerton, Colby Elementary School in Port Orchard, the Doctors Clinic in East Bremerton and the 11th Street overpass in Bremerton.
In 1947, Mr. and Mrs. Linden began attending Sylvan Way Baptist Church. While living in Ethiopia from 1964 to 1965, Mr. Linden supervised the construction of several buildings, including a chapel for the Baptist General Conference missionaries.
He continued to serve the church in many capacities, donating time and skills to the Columbia Baptist Conference, Lake Retreat, the Vancouver Bible Institute, the Bremerton Serviceman's Center and the Gideons.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Phil Linden of Bremerton and the Rev. Carl Linden of Edgewood; a daughter, Linnea Turnquist of Alliance, Ohio; a sister, Esther Balder of Sweden; and 10 grandchildren, Dave Turnquist, Nathan and Jesse, all of Bremerton, Jon of Milton, Dale Turnquist and Anna Linden Braasch, both of Minneapolis, Nils of Edgewood, Karl of New York City, Jenni Linden Hoyt of Albuquerque, N.M., and Eric Turnquist of Grand Marais, Minn.; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Sylvan Way Baptist Church in Bremerton.

James Van Horn
James Howard Van Horn, 40, of Port Orchard died
Oct. 30, 1999, at his home.
He was born May 3, 1959, in Palmer, Alaska, to Robert and Hallie Van Horn. He grew up in Belfair, graduating from North Mason High School in 1977.
Mr. Van Horn had been involved in woodwork and construction throughout his life. He had been a carpenter with Keicos Construction at the Ballard Locks for one year. Previously, he had worked in logging with Simpson Lumber.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include three daughters, LeAnn and Crystal, both of Port Orchard, and Hallie of Bremerton; three brothers, Jack Ridge of Belfair, John Ridge of Benton City and Ben Van Horn of Underwood; a sister, Cheryl Royer of Gig Harbor; and two grandchildren, Matthew Sewell and Kaytona McEdward, both of Port Orchard. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kais Stryker, in 1978, and by a brother, David Van Horn, in 1973.
A graveside inurnment is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
